When we were first given this assignment I had not put much consideration into it. I thought we were to ask a couple of questions, it would all work itself out and I would be done. But this was not the case. The thought and reflection put into interview questions really surprised me. There was far more factors other than the questions you were asking, because you were also dealing with people, people who are giving you there free time, their attention and opening themselves up to you a stranger, so there were far more responsibilities then what were initially at hand. When the interview started we actually got along great. We were both very comfortable and because we had met each other the day before the sense of familiarity was still there. But I think the biggest thing that made my interview get along so smoothly was because I had changed my interview strategy from informal questions, to improvised on the spot active participation. I made her feel more like it was us having a normal conversation then an interviewer/interviewee dynamic. She understood all my questions and would initially answer in a short answer till I asked her more about it, getting her to open up. The gist of her answers were all I could have predicted, because my questions had been proven before by scientists, exercise had a very positive emotional and mental effect on her, she was more relaxed and focused and her confidence and self-esteem improved . But one answer surprised me. When I asked her when she felt stressed because of exams other time specific stressors did you exercise? she said no, although she felt less stress when exercising she did not work out when being stressed in those specific time stressors because she felt she didn’t have time to do them. Which seems counter intuitive but makes sense because she is under a time stress that she could wait out and not a lingering
Participants had to meet certain criteria. They set up an interview day with the first hour being the section of the workshop that contained personal results such as scores on lower body strength and problem solving. I had not heard about inductive interview until my professor assign our qualitative research class an exercise related to that topic. He required our class to “inductively determine your interviewee’s conception of “closeness” without asking for a definition. Actually, I was confused about the true meaning of inductive interview. I have had some basic understandings of inductive approach and inductive analysis but I was not sure about the connection between these concepts and inductive interview. I did a quick search on google and no exact concept was found. So I came back to the assignment requirement and tried to find some clues of how to conduct an inductive interview. I will be sharing a significant experience that had a major impact on me and changed my life. The event I will be focusing on is the first few months of my fitness journey. I will apply four social psychological concepts and theories to the event. For that, I interviewed my boss, Karen. I see her almost every work day but there were still many things I wanted to ask her about. I knew that she had been married to a man before she met her wife, and that she still had his last name even after separating and remarrying. I also knew that her father was a Methodist minister and performed her marriage ceremony back when he could’ve gotten in a lot of hot water for doing so. I knew that she was adopted, too. But the rest of her life, the in-between moments, were still a mystery to me. So, I really enjoyed that interview. As you can tell from the transcription, we laughed a lot and got along well. I think she felt comfortable and she told me later that she had enjoyed talking with me. I also came more prepared and with more questions. It was hard to do my initial research on my student interviewee because there wasn’t a lot of prior information that I could find about her. With Karen, I not only had my own prior information, but she is also easily found on the internet. A lot of that has to do with her age and the businesses she has been involved
She felt that I maintained eye contact and reiterated her responses in a way to made her feel heard. The open-ended questions that I had integrated into the interview allowed her to realize the inconsistencies between her current behavior and her future goals. I big point from her was that I allowed her to do majority of the talking which she believed put her in control and that I wasn’t forcing her into a particular direction of change. She could tell that I wasn’t completely confident in the way that I asked my questions, using a lot of “um’s” and “so’s “. We also discussed how she felt about the amount of pauses I took in order to respond and how this made for a awkward silence, taking away the comfort of the setting.
