I tend to be quite critical of other speakers. Much of what I write is about what he or she has done wrong. Not for this journal! I would like to talk about a student that I thought did an excellent job on the informative speech. That speech was a huge improvement from anything thus far. There is one reason I would like to pinpoint, level of preparation. The student I am talking about is Steve. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did he create notes but he also referred to them. He did not require much reference to his notes because he practiced or maybe thought a lot about what he would do and say. Steve walked to the front with notes. Now, I am not trying to put him down in any way, but Steve tends to wing it. While his improvisation
skills are commendable, the lack of preparation is always evident. He is speaking confidently to the class, explaining why self- defense may be required. The demonstration for this part is getting a little carried away. On the other hand, Linda is having a little too much fin resisting Steve’s instructions. The disappointment over not being able to bring his firearm to demonstrate the weapons portion of his speech was not only voiced but also noticeable. There is even a clip from YouTube that he prepared to show the class. His speech is going smoothly, almost no rabbit trails in sight. Being prepared is nearly priceless when giving a speech. As aforementioned, Steve’s ability to fly by the seat of his pants is nearly praiseworthy. Yet, he never fails to find himself off topic and over the time limit. Steve’s informative speech was great. I hope he continues to be prepared.
For my informational interview I spoke with a nurse who has experience working on a medical surgical unit in a hospital setting. She has been a nurse for 10 years. She also has her bachelors degree in nursing. I started my interview by introducing myself and explaining what my assignment was about, and how she could help me tremendously with answering some questions regarding her nursing career, and what she does as a medical surgical nurse.

I had not heard about inductive interview until my professor assign our qualitative research class an exercise related to that topic. He required our class to “inductively determine your interviewee’s conception of “closeness” without asking for a definition. Actually, I was confused about the true meaning of inductive interview. I have had some basic understandings of inductive approach and inductive analysis but I was not sure about the connection between these concepts and inductive interview. I did a quick search on google and no exact concept was found. So I came back to the assignment requirement and tried to find some clues of how to conduct an inductive interview. Motivational interviewing is an important tool to utilize when assisting clients with the process of change. The goal of motivational interviewing is to help an individual see their own potential and to gain the desire for change. It helps the individual explore their current situation and what their future may look like, from there they can decide whether it is worth making that change. For this assignment, my partner Jenessa and I each took a turn being a interviewer and a client. When I was the motivator, Jenessa acted as a women who was in need to go through a detox program in order to get a new liver. It was a big transition in her life, and she was struggling to come into terms with that. In the interview, we discussed her progress thus far, what her goals are, and how she can implement change.
For this assignment, I decided to speak with Connie Chung, my guidance counselor from high school. Today, she continues to work at West Orange High School, providing academic support to select teenagers of the student body. Mrs. Chung received her BA in psychology from Rutgers University and then got her Masters in social work from the University of Maryland. Initially, Ms. Chung was interested in becoming a psychologist but realized that she liked working with kids and ultimately decided to change carer paths in college.
This week was very exciting in terms of my informational interviews and being able to work security at a music event. The informational interviews not only helped being the classroom to the real world but also provided me with real examples to better strengthen the connection. I also learned a lot in terms of dealing with the public in a busy environment and how to most successfully defuse a situation in which alcohol and attitudes are involved.
A good counsellor has to engage in several basic skills of interview including attending behaviour, questioning, encouraging, paraphrasing, summarising, and reflection of feelings (Achanta, 2014). These skills are obtained through practices and supervisions. Therefore, one has to evaluate the micro skills that he or she applies in counselling sessions to gain a better insight of his or her interviewing style, strengths, and limitations. Role-play sessions are considered effective in helping counsellors to practise their micro skills in a variety of situations that they might face (Ivey & Ivey, 2007). This essay is a self-reflection of my interviewing style and the skills that I used in a role-play session which helps me to understand my own strengths and limitations in counselling.

When we were first given this assignment I had not put much consideration into it. I thought we were to ask a couple of questions, it would all work itself out and I would be done. But this was not the case. The thought and reflection put into interview questions really surprised me. There was far more factors other than the questions you were asking, because you were also dealing with people, people who are giving you there free time, their attention and opening themselves up to you a stranger, so there were far more responsibilities then what were initially at hand.
My interview actually went really well. I do like some things that I did for this interview but I also dislike some of the things I did and there are many changes I wish I had done now that the actual interview is now over. I found myself critiquing myself while listening to the recording and transcribing what I said. Overall, yes, I did get the main ideas of her opinions but I didn’t ask very good questions and I also made a couple rookie mistakes when doing this interview. I did the reading before the interview, and I read the interview material once more after the interview and I found myself not doing some of the things that the reading said to do.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. Throughout this term, my fellow classmates and I have had a chance to participate in a group project with two or three of our peers. The general topic was a vivid problem in a industry. Our class had a very wide and diverse sets of topics: from Styrofoam, to industrial hacking, to corruption in an influential international organization like FIFA, and so many more. Our group decided to develop a project named “Outsourcing and the price we pay for brands”. The name itselves is somewhat self-explanatory, however the problem is so much more complicated and interesting. This video mock interview was a great experience. The questions were based on interview questions that a company can ask you and prepared you for a real interview. This mock interview was fun to do and taught me many lessons I can do in a real interview setting. To start off, I had to prepare for this mock interview. Some things I considered when preparing was to firstly, look at the questions and briefly go over my answers for each question. After that, I had to wear my best attire and adjust my camera and lighting. Lastly, I had to remind myself with some tips when doing this interview.
