Motivational interviewing is an important tool to utilize when assisting clients with the process of change. The goal of motivational interviewing is to help an individual see their own potential and to gain the desire for change. It helps the individual explore their current situation and what their future may look like, from there they can decide whether it is worth making that change. For this assignment, my partner Jenessa and I each took a turn being a interviewer and a client. When I was the motivator, Jenessa acted as a women who was in need to go through a detox program in order to get a new liver. It was a big transition in her life, and she was struggling to come into terms with that. In the interview, we discussed her progress thus far, what her goals are, and how she can implement change. I tried to have an open posture and to maintain eye contact as these approaches show the client that you are listening and are engaged in the conversation. I implemented silence listening and gave the client the time needed to respond. In the feedback, Jenessa mentioned that I seemed genuinely interested in what she was saying and that she appreciated having the time to elaborate on a question. Looking back at the video, I feel as if my body posture could have been better. Since we were sitting on a couch, it was hard to have that direct contact position. Also, I found that holding the clipboard was hindering my involvement as I kept glancing down at it. Moreover, I was using empathetic statement in the interview, such as "to clarify..." and "that must be difficult for you". Not only did this allow the client to add any more information if they pleased, but it also gave her comfort. Coming into the substance abuse meeting the student nurse was scared and nervous. She was scared of the reaction of the consumers and feared all the stereotypes she heard about typical alcoholics. Innervison gave the student nurse a new outlook on these types of consumers. She no longer looked at them as people who were just drunks and wanted to use AA as an excuse to make it seem like they are getting help. She never really looked at alcoholism as a true addiction; it seemed like more of an excuse to escape life’s problems. Sitting in and listening to these consumers gave the student nurse a dose of reality. The student nurse now understands alcoholism better and AA helped her realize recovery is truly a process that takes one day and one step at a time.

The definition of motivational interviewing (MI) has evolved and been refined since the first publications on its use as a way to deal with behaviour change. The technical therapeutic definition of motivational interviewing is a collaborative, and goal oriented method of communication with giving specific observation to the language of change. It is intended to reinforce an individual’s motivation for and development towards a particular objective by evoking and investigating the individual's own arguments for change (Miller & Rollnick, 2012). The case scenario is of a homeless young guy named Jim who appears to have an intellectual disability. Jim is addicted to marijuana and abuses alcohol and has suicidal thoughts. He has anger control issues where he is known to verbally threaten others. He currently has a counsellor who he had established a therapeutic relationship. From these sessions, the counsellor has learned that Jim had been physically abused by his stepfather. From reading this case scenario about Jim, it is evident that he would benefit from several different approaches or interventions including motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy.
The Motivational Interviewing film was very informative. I was able to get a clear understanding of what is to be expected by the therapist during a session. The film explained the therapist should engage in reflective listening, develop a growing discrepancy, avoid arguing with clients, roll with resistance and support self-advocacy. Miller believed that this approach was far more effective than traditional methods, where the therapist pushed for change. In contrast, Miller explained that motivational interviewing focused on empowerment and helping clients to become motivationally driven to change. Therefore, when I work with substance abusers I will show empathy, encourage and validate their successes and their feelings about any failures. In addiction, I will help the person learn from their failures and normalize the situation. Furthermore, I would attempt to ensure that the person had several coping strategies in place, to help when he or she finds themselves in a difficult situation. Moreover, I intend to ensure the client has all the tools he or she needs to succeed while getting to the root of their problem through counseling.

The chapter that I chose for this blog post was chapter nine about mental health. The article I read was "motivational interviewing and social work practice". The article is about a different technique of changing one's behavior. It takes a focus on clients and their goals. The main principles of this idea are expressing empathy, a focus on a client being self-supportive and development of discrepancy. This has been used to help people with a drinking problem and have even been tried on cases of domestic violence victims. I was able to talk to my client without being visibly nervous. I am proud to say I handled my client’s problems as they came up without fear that I may say the wrong thing. In the first video, I found myself repeating things, for what reason I do not know. I can say my nonverbal skills need improving. One specific aspect of the interview was my hand gestures and motions. I really got involved with my client’s problems, and the way I tried to help her understand what I was saying and to get an understanding what she was saying, so I used my hands. I tried to keep by body in a position that would let the client know that I was using attentive listening skills. I cared about why she came to the facility for help. Each session, I adjusted my seat to make eye contact so my client could like she could trust me with her information and that I cared enough to listen to her
I was not playing with my pen or smiling during the interview. I was able to look at my client and be professional about the situation that my client was trying to explain to me. The other things that I had notice about myself during the video was, I had lead forward toward my client and was actively listening to him. I was able to give him empathy not sympathy toward his issues. The whole time I did not feels that I was not able to speak freely because the client is my family member. During the first session I was trying so hard and I was thinking that I have to have all the solution to my client. Moreover, I was able to see make my client feel comfortable and share the issue that he had with his co-worker in dept. In the end my client feels that sometime it is okay to talk about things or topic that he is not interested in as long as he feels comfortable enough to have a conversation with other on the topic.
