This week was very exciting in terms of my informational interviews and being able to work security at a music event. The informational interviews not only helped being the classroom to the real world but also provided me with real examples to better strengthen the connection. I also learned a lot in terms of dealing with the public in a busy environment and how to most successfully defuse a situation in which alcohol and attitudes are involved. The informational interviews I conducted between the Chief of Cleveland police and the State Fire Marshall were both helpful in connecting the classroom to the real world. Overall, I was grateful for this experience. I was able to find out more about the behind the scenes responsibilities of our schools’ leadership.
I have enjoyed meeting new people and have enjoyed the open day in Cardiff this week. This has helped me gain confidence on studying again.
Finally, for homework I would assign the reading of excerpts of “Warriors Don’t Cry”, the memoir of Melba Pattillo Beals, one of the Little Rock Nine. I would ask the students to pretend that they were a student at Central High in 1957 and write a page long diary entry about what one would be seeing and how one would be feeling at this time. All of these activities would promote student-centered learning in that they are free to arrive at their conclusions independently, and they would help develop Formal Operational skills through hypothetical deductive logic.
For my informational interview I spoke with a nurse who has experience working on a medical surgical unit in a hospital setting. She has been a nurse for 10 years. She also has her bachelors degree in nursing. I started my interview by introducing myself and explaining what my assignment was about, and how she could help me tremendously with answering some questions regarding her nursing career, and what she does as a medical surgical nurse.
Interviews are very popular among most individuals especially researchers and scholars as they attempt to obtain information and data from an interviewee. However, there are many factors that influence the interview and which determines its success or failure. Often, the interviewer takes charge of the situation, and they have the sole responsibility of asking the questions while the interviewee provides an explanation or an answer to the question asked. As a result, an interview can be defined as a consultation or a discussion in person through which information and data are exchanged regarding a particular phenomenon event with the intention of establishing the interviewee’s position. The interview is one of the most critical parts to successful police work, there are many things to take into consideration before beginning an interview, such as preparation, barriers to communication, listening, verbal and non-verbal communication, proxemics, and the location. An interview is usually the first opportunity for the officers to gather facts and information about the occurrence. Throughout the analysis of the following interview between an elderly lady that was assaulted and an interviewing officer, I am going to demonstrate the interviewer’s strengths, weaknesses, the pros and cons of the interview, the seven steps of a successful interview, and some suggestions the interviewer can better from for future interviews.
Atkinson (2000) among many others conceive of residential segregation as a multidimensional phenomenon that can be solved using empirical analysis. Likewise Atkinson wrote that segregation varies along five distinct axes of measurement: “evenness, exposure, concentration, centralization, and clustering.”– I am suggesting an alternative to researching segregation, focusing upon gaining an insight into peoples “on the ground” perceptions of segregation and if they feel if it is a relevant phenomenon in the area by using qualitative methods of interview. I had not heard about inductive interview until my professor assign our qualitative research class an exercise related to that topic. He required our class to “inductively determine your interviewee’s conception of “closeness” without asking for a definition. Actually, I was confused about the true meaning of inductive interview. I have had some basic understandings of inductive approach and inductive analysis but I was not sure about the connection between these concepts and inductive interview. I did a quick search on google and no exact concept was found. So I came back to the assignment requirement and tried to find some clues of how to conduct an inductive interview. Interviewing is one of the most difficult clinical skills to master. Both intellectual and emotional skills are required when conducting an interview. The first step of a successful interview is setting the stage for the interview. The first minutes should be to meet and greet the patient. This provides some assurance and comfort to the patient. When meeting the patient for the first time, establishing a positive rapport so that the patient will feel at ease to discuss the issue that warranted the visit is of high priority. It is important to greeting and welcomes the patient using their name. Introducing self and identifying one’s specific role and the time limits of the interview. Make sure the patient is ready and their privacy is maintained. It is important to conduct the interview in a quiet and private environment. (Seidel, Ball, Dains, Flynn, Solomon, & Stewart, 2011).
There are many aspects that make up a successful interview or interrogation. An investigator does not become a skilled interviewer or interrogator over night. Training and experience are vital to becoming skilled at interviewing and interrogation. Experience is the best teacher, conducting interviews and interrogations is the only way to become more skilled. In this paper I will explain all the aspects that make up a successful interview. I will also explain the difference between an interview and an interrogation.
Life story interview/ project was design for you to get to know a random stranger or a close friends. You would asked general questions about the person life, school, work and family, therefore many will open up to you but a lot of people would not. Before you did the interview you had taken a NIH certification make sure you understand how to do the interview. You had recorded it, transmitted it, coded it and then present it to the class. Once everything was done you learned something new about this person or you may look at their cultural a different way.
