I had not heard about inductive interview until my professor assign our qualitative research class an exercise related to that topic. He required our class to “inductively determine your interviewee’s conception of “closeness” without asking for a definition. Actually, I was confused about the true meaning of inductive interview. I have had some basic understandings of inductive approach and inductive analysis but I was not sure about the connection between these concepts and inductive interview. Without a structured protocol, I did not know where I should have developed follow-up questions. In some points of the interview, I received a whole bunch of information and became overwhelmed. There were some pauses during my short interview. Sometimes, the interviewee waited for me to ask more questions. She even kept asking me “Do you want to know anything else?” After first twenty minutes of the interview, I really felt hard to keep track with the interview. I was abashed and a little bit panicking to propose the next question. Sometimes, I asked a random question just to maintain the interview. I felt like I was in a marathon that I was exhausted at the last run. I have been uncomfortable when recalling the interview. I keep reminding myself that I did not know how to maintain a real inductive interview. Because the assignment just required a transcript for only twenty minutes, so I selected the best part of the interview. The terrible part did not show up in the transcript. Then, I just analyzed the good part of the interview. Eventually, I forgot about my own concern of how badly I did with with an inductive interview. For that, I interviewed my boss, Karen. I see her almost every work day but there were still many things I wanted to ask her about. I knew that she had been married to a man before she met her wife, and that she still had his last name even after separating and remarrying. I also knew that her father was a Methodist minister and performed her marriage ceremony back when he could’ve gotten in a lot of hot water for doing so. I knew that she was adopted, too. But the rest of her life, the in-between moments, were still a mystery to me. So, I really enjoyed that interview. As you can tell from the transcription, we laughed a lot and got along well. I think she felt comfortable and she told me later that she had enjoyed talking with me. I also came more prepared and with more questions. It was hard to do my initial research on my student interviewee because there wasn’t a lot of prior information that I could find about her. I tried to talk as little as possible and to ask questions that would keep her talking. I felt that our rapport developed slowly in the beginning but once she saw that all I wanted were her thoughts and opinions, she opened up much easily. From the moment she came into the room, I tried to make the process of interviewing as casual as I could make it. I let her choose her seat and moved according to how she sitting. I also picked a study room in the back of the library when no one would walk by.
The best way to learn about a person is to ask them questions. Future teachers ask the teachers before them questions to make them successful in educating the next generation. As adults, we believe that we know everything about people younger than us. However, as we are learning about middle level learners, the best source of information on some topics are middle school students. Through the interview of middle school students, I was able to gather data and analyze it, and I can use this information to influence my future practices as a teacher.
When we were first given this assignment I had not put much consideration into it. I thought we were to ask a couple of questions, it would all work itself out and I would be done. But this was not the case. The thought and reflection put into interview questions really surprised me. There was far more factors other than the questions you were asking, because you were also dealing with people, people who are giving you there free time, their attention and opening themselves up to you a stranger, so there were far more responsibilities then what were initially at hand.
