The best way to learn about a person is to ask them questions. Future teachers ask the teachers before them questions to make them successful in educating the next generation. As adults, we believe that we know everything about people younger than us. However, as we are learning about middle level learners, the best source of information on some topics are middle school students. Through the interview of middle school students, I was able to gather data and analyze it, and I can use this information to influence my future practices as a teacher. Instead of interviewing students from my middle school clinical placement. I decided to ask questions of middle school students in China. This was an eye-opening experience for me, as the insights provided were different than the typical responses that would be expected of students in the United States. Even though, most of these middle school students enjoy coming to school every day and learning new things, school is also one of the major causes of stress in their lives. The stress of school is added on to the stress that exists from their parents, siblings, and relationships with their friends. Throughout the length of schooling, students go through various changes. In their first year of school, children are required to make the transition from being at home for the entire day to being in school for a number of hours a day. These transition periods happen many times through the schooling years, but the most drastic changes occur during the transition from high school to college, where students weather numerous lifestyle changes. While each individual student goes on their own journey, certain themes remain common between different students. Studies are done to look at these themes identifying the numerous differences and similarities.
Middle school marks a very exciting, yet challenging time for many students, parents, and teachers. Teachers help us expand and open our mind by giving us skills throughout students’ early life to help students when they are older. By learning information from teachers, students become better people, in a couple of ways. Besides inquiring knowledge from their teachers, students learn to work with one another, open their mind to other peoples’ thoughts and ideas, respect one another, and learn different techniques for life’s issues.
This paper will illustrate the lives of two high school teachers, Mrs. Natalie Wesbecher and Mr. Matthew Biver. Both teachers have obtained their Masters Degrees from prestigious universities, and proudly take the role of teachers and mentors at Freeburg Community High School in Freeburg, Illinois. After interviewing my school counselor who has an advance degree in School Counseling/Death and Dying (Thanatology), I’ve learned how she address issues of grief as well as promoting healthy grieving for students as a School Guidance Counselor. The transition from elementary to middle school is a major event in the lives of students and parents. Most students will experience some emotional turmoil and social adjustment due to unfamiliar students, school staff, multiple sets of behavioral and classroom rules and expectations (Akos, 2002). The results of the middle school years affect young people through adolescence and adulthood (Greene, & Ollendick, 1993). Several studies have reported that this transition is the reason for declines in academic achievement, self-esteem, and interest in school (Kingery, Erdley, 2007). Therefore, these students need to receive assistance prior to, during, and after the move (Schumacher, 1998).
An effective school leader possesses skills to create, implement, evaluate, improve and share a staff development plan. I met with Ben Rhodes, Sandy Creek Middle School’s principal, to interview him on the specific elements of his yearly staff development plan. We began with the design process focusing on the district and school goals. District goals include improving literacy across the content areas in reading and writing, Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum (GVC). Guaranteed and Viable Technology (GVT), and Closing the Achievement Gap (Equity in Excellence). Using a variety of assessments to focus on specific needs, Ben Rhodes and Mary Sonya, our Pupil Achievement Specialist, examined CSAP, Explore, MAP, and RAD data. They use the Colorado Growth Model to help guide them to determine if students have made adequate yearly progress. Together, they created the plan that included the district goals mentioned above as well as continuing to include new technology skills, information on special education changes with Response to Intervention (RTI), maintaining current staff implementation of literacy goals and a new goal of raising achievement in math.
Many people in high school, mostly teens, experience dozens of pressure in their life. To be specific, Schoolwork. Most teens want to excel in school, but want to have a social life or play some kind of sport. In middle school the students will be going through a stage in their life which is really hard for them. Teachers in training have a lot to focus on and plan for in their futures. How to handle a classroom, fulfill the curriculum, and accurately assess students are all tremendous responsibilities. Experienced teachers have a decided edge in these categories. One area of the high school environment that developing teachers may be able to more strongly relate to, however, is the life of a teenager. It was only a few years ago that the future teachers of today were just students themselves. It is important to remember that high school is only partly about classroom teaching. A vitally important part of a good high school is it’s extra-curricular environment. Good teachers have the ability both to teach their content area skillfully and to relate to their students. A great way to learn more about students, and for students to learn more about each other, is through the clubs, sports, and extracurricular academic activities of a school.
I choose to meet with my academic advisor for one of my campus involvement assignment. My advisor is Stacy. I meet with her before when I was registering for class at the being of the semester. I wanted to talk to her mostly about how I wanted to attend the University of Minnesota, The Carson School of Business. My goal is the get a degree in human resource management. It’s been my ultimate goal since I was I high school. Stacy informed me that Carson was extremely competitive to get into. She seemed to have a negative view on me wanting to attended Carson. She made it sound like it was an imposable goal. I told her all I needed from her was to tell me what classes I should be taking what my G.P.A should be, and the rest of the requirement.
