We worked on it and at the time I believed we had agreed on our final product, I personally felt all the slides needed at this point was editing and final touches to make it visually appealing for the audience. I went online to the google presentation we were using as a group to prepare our presentation and was surprised to see a different layout, additional slides, and contents which were different from what we as a group had worked on and approved as the final work we were going to present. Elaborate All three group members were present in the library to work on the presentation together and rehearse before the presentation. At the time of the conflict. I was confused as to why the group member who didn't agree with the final product and the direction in which the presentation went did not voice her opinions or disagreements. I was worried that we were so disorganized at a time when we should be ready for the presentation. Fortunately for all group members we did read our notes and do our research on dementia care in relation to wandering, elopement, rummaging and hoarding and we did understand that wandering and elopement was a big concern for dementia patients and was a big safety concern, because we had this knowledge damage control was possible and we stayed focused on our presentation and collaborated as a group in the little time we had left. I will be discussing about my reflection on the Six Week Group Content/Intervention Mid-term project and my internship. The assignment is on Psychoeducational and Counseling Groups for adolescents who are encountering dating violence from their partner. I will be discussing the paper and the critical knowledge that I obtained after completing the assignment.
The general purpose is to engage the students with a provided curriculum and play time for the children. Between these sessions includes various breaks where the students have time for breakfast, and lunch. The agenda is a way to better engage and develop the students through early education. The teachers plan the schedule catered to certain needs of the children, such as speech, behavioral, and psychological thoughts.
To overcome this within the group, I asked for each member to develop one design concept and I would complete the poster using each agreed aspect. In Turn, this ended the conflict and resulted in each person being pleased with the final outcome. On reflection, by taking charge of the poster design and creative side of the assignment, I freed up time and removed stress from the other team members which allowed them to focus on the other tasks at hand. However, in hindsight, there was a point close to the deadline where I began to feel stressed and isolated. I believe that this situation potentially could have been avoided if I had communicated better with my team and received some help when finalising the poster.
I had never realized all the dealings that had to occur for things to get fixed and dealt with in the school district. It’s shocking how much money and skill in presentation it took to get an agenda passed by the board. During this meeting I heard of two agenda task attempt to be passed. The presenter of the Budget Amendments had amazing presentation skills and the ability to clearly present the amendments and was able to get their amendment accepted by the board. While the presenter for the Local District Update, affecting local policies had a much weaker presentation and was unable to get the board members to understand the purpose of the proposal and got their decision suspended until the next meeting. These two presentations made me understand the importance of being able to present you materials to a group of people. If you can’t properly explain your purpose and goal of your agenda to someone they are less likely to support whatever it is that is being presented to them. It makes it seem as if you are not entirely sure of your proposal, yet even if you are not sure in it confidence sales. The meeting was interesting enough that I would go to a second meeting if I had nothing else to do. Something interesting I saw while in the meeting was that most of the people in attendance weren’t paying attention to the items being presented. I think what would help the group be more effective is if all members vocalized their ideas or questions. During this group meeting it seemed to me that the president of the board was the highest participator. Other members seemed distracted by the information they were given. They constantly looked down and were not attentively listening to the individuals speaking Also, the leader in this group John, should have tried to get quieter group members to express their ideas or questions.
After re watching my own presentation I have noticed many different things that I didn’t think of or notice when I was originally presenting it. While watching it some of the things that I think I did well on where first my talking. This is something that I know I did better on because I did my presentation a little different from everyone else. Another thing that I think worked well for my presentation was the word to picture ratio. I felt like I did a good job not putting my entire script on the screen but enough to give the class a good summery about what I was talking about. This caused aggressive behavior and lead to misunderstandings. Our ability, concepts and methods deteriorated as we progressed. There was minimal substantive team discussion and team goals, roles, procedure and responsibilities were being neglected. The team facilitated a meeting on campus and concluded that every Sunday the team would get together at the college for presentation and resolve conflicting parts within the assignment. This seemed to work for about two weeks before it started to fall apart.
Our group was really just disagreeing on which topic to go with. On that first day Alberto and I went with the topic over gun malfunctions in the military, while the two girls in our group went with the one that involved crime scene photos. After the group discussion on Friday I talked to Alberto and he said that he was still going to do the gun malfunctions in the military, so I was still going to do it too. The girls thought that it would be too hard to find anything about it and they just honestly didn’t even want to try. So once again I was in a group in which no one could agree or even get anywhere with the discussion.
In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
While our first assignment was a group argument, the process was difficult at first, however, afterwards it was proved to me that it was more easy that what I had imaged it to be. Working in groups help in the development of my communication skills, however, I observed that I had many things to learn and the communication between my partners and me was truly necessary for the success and the completion of the argument. The argument was difficult to create and write, however, due to the work effort of all my partners and all their contribution to the writing of the argument it help me understand personally that we needed to work together. I’m tired, a little stressed and disappointed with some of the group members this week. This has been the most challenging time in group so far. Everything is usually fine, but something is off this week. Although, we have group chats, our group cohesion is off. After, deciding to do the outline one way, we ended up doing it another way. That was cool until individuals brought the confusion. One person thought this way, the other thought that way. It was a mess. Our group dynamics were all over the place. The impact this had on me was very negative. With your help Mrs. Evans, we eventually decided to keep the outline simple. The other group members picked their duties, while mine were assigned to me. It did not bother me that I was assigned duties. Actually, my absence from the meeting helped to decide what I was to do. When it comes to the norming and forming of this group, I find myself at a loss for words. The norming process is off. There is less cohesion than usual; we have not been as effect this week. Also, relationships do not seem to be strengthening. This makes me angry because it affects us all. Unlike the norming stage, the forming stage is pretty solid. All of us are comfortable (in my opinion) giving our opinions, and we understand what is required of us. There is no need to form rules they are already in place. In my opinion, some of the members did not follow the rules. I for one broke a rule.
According to Johnson and Weaver (1992), groupthink is defined as “an unhealthy decision-making pattern characterized by a high degree of cohesiveness and a striving for consensus among the members of a decision making group” (Introduction, para. 1). The authors’ purpose for writing this article is to highlight how the use of groupthink is engrained in our educational system and how detrimental effects occur as a result. From a young age, students are conditioned to solve problems in school and using methods that fit within the norms of behavioral expectations. In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Regarding my specific gains in competencies, I feel that I learned the most and was most likely to gain specific group facilitating competencies at the weekly class. Learning in group class is taught me the tools to use to work with groups therapy, communities and also with individuals through the process of changes. On Tuesday before class started, we had a group meeting concerning our oral presentation. Most of us have met a week earlier to discuss what we were going to talk about during the presentation. We put it together on PowerPoint and quickly went over all the slides. One thing I learned about our group is that some of us tend to shy away when doing presentations in front of the class. Voluntarily I wouldn’t go up, depending what the topic is and if I knew much about it. If I prepare for it, I don’t mind doing it. Communication is very important when working in groups. This is what keeps most of them together. Communication wasn’t a problem in our group because most of us knew each other. Some of the members I do not usually communicate to because they aren’t in my class while a few are. Sometimes when people are communicating, I find that there is a language barrier between us where I might not be sure what they are saying. If this happens, I usually just tell that I didn’t catch what they said if and if they can repeat it. At other times, it can be just my listening skills. Although we didn’t have a long meeting, we practiced just reading the slides to each other. Because we each worked on our own part of the presentation, we had to explain to each other what we did and what information we are presenting so that everyone in the group is familiar.
