For my final placement in early childhood, I was placed in a preschool classroom where my role was to showcase my skills as an educator. I took on my placement supervisor’s responsibilities and managed many of the classroom activities, circles, and meals. On the first day, I met with my placement supervisor and we went over expectations, classroom responsibilities, and curriculum planning. Her role was to supervise me at placement and be there for support but allow me to lead the classroom with the other educator. I expressed my hopes and ambitions for the placement, and together we cooperatively made weekly goals to achieve the requirements set by my program. At first, I found it difficult to grab the children’s attention when we would start transitioning and it was difficult for me to serve lunch due to the number of allergies we had. My placement supervisor gave me tips and helped me to develop strategies to improve. Overall it was a wonderful placement and I was offered work once I graduated. I believe what made it such a wonderful placement was the teamwork and team dynamics we established early on. Having conversations about expectations and goals, as well as the centre’s philosophy helped to get all of us on the same page. The other educator in the room and I got along well, and my program supervisor was there supporting what we were doing. We worked together and maintained open communication throughout the day. Although I was described as shy when I started, I would like to think I was perceived positively. If I could go back to the situation I would continue practicing the skills I was taught, however, I would not change my role as I enjoyed the work I did and the dynamics the team
Overall, I was very impressed with the infant room I observed. To start off the day, the teacher warmly welcomed all of the children and parents. The teacher asked the parent how their night was since they left the daycare the night before, when they ate last, had a diaper change, and when did they wake up. I made me feel like the teacher really cared about the children even when they where not in her care and waited to make sure everything went ok at home. In closing, my time in the kindergarten autistic support room has opened my eyes to say the least. I have a greater understanding and respect for these children and teachers. I have seen many teachers and aids with my work as a case manager but I have not seen a better teacher as Mrs. F. I was fortunate and lucky to work with such an experienced professional in the field to help lay my foundation for my future role as a school psychologist.
I feel that this Coop experience was a great way for me to reflect on my abilities to be a quality educator. I feel that I would have gotten more out of this Coop experience if our school year would have ended a little later, but overall, I think I received a lot from this time. My Coop was at my work at Head Start PDPY in North Platte. The center is a newly renovated room, so it is nice and clean with lots of storage space. Overall, I really enjoy working in the space because it is convenient and although it is small, we are able to make it work well. This reflection paper is divided into five main sections. The first section gives a general introduction of internship that I was doing during my internship period. The second section provides an overview of the internship practice and tasks that I was assigned to do. The third section is about the office technologies I used during the internship. The fourth section is about the benefits of the RCBC Paralegal Program courses taken as applied to the work that I performed. Overall my time in this preschool classroom met all of my expectations based on best practices. I feel that on a typical day when it is the primary teacher or teachers, the room meets the expectations of best practice, NAEYC, ECERS and state standards. Once meeting the teacher, you are able to tell that she is up to date on her research and theories about children and early childhood education. At the Cathedral, I worked in a class, key stage and teaching assistant team. I am always approachable and my personality allows me to build rapport, working successfully within a team. I value my inclusion within a staff team and it adds to the joy and support from working within a school. Being valued as a member of staff is a key importance, and I respect and value highly every member of staff I work with, learning from their experience, whilst sharing my own. Teamwork was something that I am very familiar with. Working at my local Dairy Queen, I have learned that other’s often need help (especially in areas that get more work like Drive Thru and grill) and since I don’t have any customers to wait on, I try to help them. This occurs at my other job as an Environmental Service Worker (housekeeping and laundry), where often don’t have enough housekeepers, we often send out a laundry worker to help them with their duties. As children growing up, we tend to imitate and aspire to be like the people we look up to. Looking back at my childhood, my passion for teaching and working with children comes as no surprise. When I was in 5th grade a young boy my age was as others stated to be "different." Teaching him, reading to him on the bus, and just always wanting to get to know him made me realize how much I would like to do this professionally. Seeing how the grown ups interacted, and was so effective with children really amused me. I have been a Special Education Para-Educator for eleven years now. My decision to do this was based on the needs of my family and kids. When my last child was born, the doctors did not think that he would make it. He had a heart malfunction and was born with RSV and Von Villibrantds disease (which I did not find out until he was three); those factors lead me to want to work with special education kids, knowing that I could make a difference.
As a quiet, shy and reserved person the work field with my current experience have shown me that the very principles of being a future supervisor may have a small challenge due to my personal comfort zone limits. Even though I still strive for future success and possibly a supervisor position at some point in my current career I will have to overcome this fear and face the challenges and duties that come with this position. At some point in time I plan to accept this challenge and gain skills as well as experience from my previous employers to have the principles of supervision to be used at the correct moment. I was less positive about building relationships with certain staff because of how they communicated back to me. From this I could tell the risks outweighed the benefits of making the relationship happen. In a friendly atmosphere, I chose to interact with the staff because I felt valued and I wanted to develop a relationship with them. In situations where the staff were not friendly, I chose not to build a bond with them because I felt it was not beneficial for me. "If workers feel that an environment is hostile to them in any way, it gives them much less of an incentive to be engaging and seek out relationships." (BizShifts: 2015). I had to realize even though the risks of the relationship outweighed the benefits, it was important to still overcome the problems and try to establish a positive relationship with every staff. This was because there is a lot of information sharing done about the children, my opinion on certain things, activities with the children and providing feedback about the nursery environment to the relevant practitioners. It is also important for children’s development and what staff portray to the children as they can sense negativity between different staff.
The internship that I acquired during the summer of 2010 at the Greenwood Sports and Industrial Rehabilitation Center (GSIRC), allowed me to gain an immeasurable amount of experience during my tenure at this facility. Within this period, the exposure to new concepts within the physical therapy industry allowed me to observe and work hands on with patients of all ages and disabilities that exposed me to various treatment plans and programs to restore client’s mobility. The essential Physical Education and Exercise Science (PEES) courses taken at Lander University were beneficial to my academic knowledgebase, which prepared me and developed me for the opportunity within the physical therapy discipline. Working as an intern taught me the responsibility of time management and working within a lean schedule that allow me to further develop my skill set. After a review of my performance in the assigned group, I have learned a great deal about myself and behavior in the team-setting situation. This is not the first experience in a team setting. Previous team setting experiences were conducted in sporting and recreational environments rather than academics. While the setting and the environments were indeed different, there were many commonalities and correlations between the team settings I previously experienced and the current academic team-setting experience for this academic course project.
