On February 6th, I visited the infant room at Day Nursery Ruth A. Lilly Center and completed the ITERS observation one. Being my first experience doing the ITERS evaluation, I thought that it was going to be a little difficult to us. However, I was surprised to find out how it was very strait forward and the notes for clarification left no room for misunderstanding. While I was doing the ITERS evaluation at the Day Nursery, I noticed things I like about the program, things I did not like, and felt like the scores where accurate. Overall, I was very impressed with the infant room I observed. To start off the day, the teacher warmly welcomed all of the children and parents. The teacher asked the parent how their night was since they left the daycare the night before, when they ate last, had a diaper change, and when did they wake up. I made me feel like the teacher really cared about the children even when they where not in her care and waited to make sure everything went ok at home. My first observation was at Head Start. I talked to Tracey Claflin about some of the principles they use in their program and how they use them. I wasn’t able to observe the children directly because my TB skin test results came up positive. Tracey explained to me that because my results were positive I couldn’t meet children or be in the same room as the children. Due to this, I had to make some arrangements to instead speak with Tracey about some principles she has seen and that they follow. I met with her for an hour discussing the principles and how they were used in the Head Start program. One of the principles she said was highly important for Head Start was principle number 2. She explained that when there is enough time and opportunities to spend time with a child individually the caregiver puts full attention on one child. She explained that they like to focus attention on a child throughout the day so that the child doesn’t feel left out. She says that alone time for a child with a caregiver is usually tummy time. They allow the infants and toddlers to roll around and look at the carpet designs. Tracey explained to me how they asses each child through this quality time that the caregiver and the child have alone. This quality time the caregiver has with the child is important,
Child Observation Record (COR) is the checklist that evaluates children’s learning in the five content areas. I witness a nurse getting on the floor with a patient and taking the time to play with the patient. The patient had the biggest smile on her face. Staff would walk around singing children 's songs, therapist were in rooms with hand puppets and other types of therapeutic activities to stimulate the patient. Family members that were visiting did not just visit their loved ones; they also visit with other patients, families, nurses and therapist. The patients there were happy, most were unable to speak or move due to their medical disabilities. Looking around their rooms, were amazing it was like walking into any little girl’s or boys room all age appropriate. Many community organizations have donated to the “Children Place”, so the children would have a place just like they were at home. Overall, it was one of the friendliest places I have

At Wildcat Hospital, I performed my first newborn assessment on a baby. I walked into the postpartum room and greeted the mother and family and asked if I could (along with another student) perform and assessment on the baby for the second time. This assessment was different from the initial assessment I performed four hours previously, because the second time around I had more control of the assessment. I listened to the heart, lungs, and stomach. I assessed the newborn’s respirations, reflexes and temperature. After our assessment was over, I was able to swaddle the baby back up and hand the infant back into the arms of an excited new mother.
How much time is spent on academics such as identifying words and math? How much time is spent on the arts including crafts, dance and music? The process of assessment involves a variation of assessment tools, including interview and observational testing.
At first, I found it difficult to grab the children’s attention when we would start transitioning and it was difficult for me to serve lunch due to the number of allergies we had. My placement supervisor gave me tips and helped me to develop strategies to improve. Overall it was a wonderful placement and I was offered work once I graduated. I believe what made it such a wonderful placement was the teamwork and team dynamics we established early on. Having conversations about expectations and goals, as well as the centre’s philosophy helped to get all of us on the same page. The other educator in the room and I got along well, and my program supervisor was there supporting what we were doing. We worked together and maintained open communication throughout the day. Although I was described as shy when I started, I would like to think I was perceived positively. If I could go back to the situation I would continue practicing the skills I was taught, however, I would not change my role as I enjoyed the work I did and the dynamics the team
It’s been noted that recent studies specify that “more than half of all 3-5-year-old children in the United States attend child-care centers prior to kindergarten” and “Given these high usage rates, the quality of these early child-care experiences has become an important public policy issue” (Peisner-Feinberg 2001). It is believed that part of the issue is a result of parents not knowing what the primary purpose of daycare/child care facilities are and what high quality daycares consist of in considering a their child should attend.
...onomy. Day care can be a positive option for parents seeking help with child care. It is self-assuring for many parents that are struggling to raise a family while balancing job security, to know that there are a variety of options out there for the watching of children. As with any difficult task, the monitoring of child safety concerns should stay primarily as a parent’s number one responsibility and concern. Today there is government help and assistance by providing mandatory safety and ethics requirements that are enforced through safety-regulatory agencies and through inspections for compliance for the purpose of licensing approval. It is a welcome thought for parents to know that they may be doing their children a favor in using a day care, by helping their young ones become better prepared for kindergarten and giving them an opportunity to learn new skills.

As an early childhood educator my job is not to simple play with children. I must plan, provide and supervise all while “playing” with my students. The classroom serves as the physical environment for the children for most of their waking hours. These classrooms need to be attractive and function effectively. Concerns for any early childhood educator should always include space, equipment and materials used, outdoor space and the daily schedule to ensure that all students are provided ample opportunities to learn and grow within a safe and secure environment.

The Infant and Toddler Rating Scale is just one of the four scales that share the same format and use a scoring system. All the scales have different requirements because they assess different age groups and different settings. These tests are checking on the organization of space, interactions, activities, schedules and provisions of staff and parents. This scale is specifically set up for children from birth to 30 months of age; this group is most vulnerable physically, emotionally and mentally. This scale assesses the environment for the children’s health and safety, appropriate stimulation through language and activities with warm interactions.
