Introduction: I thought it would be wise to focus on risk management before attempting to run through Scenario C simulation. I came up with a list of possible issues that could throw my project off track and prevent me from accomplishing tasks successfully. Based on chapters three and four, I knew Scenario C would be focused on teaching us how to approach solving problems and coming up with effective strategies to find solutions. The readings express the need to expose the underlying problems. The issue that I am having about this week’s scenario is that the underlying root problem is exposed to us on week five. The underlying problem was exposed and provided to us in a not so organic way. Personally, I had a difficult time understanding how this week’s readings actually tied into the simulation program scenario, since much of what the readings suggest is not something we can manipulate on the decision board. I understand that the simulation is a tool to teach us how to become aware and how to be sensitive the uncertainty that comes with any project managing, however how can we be expected to be successful …show more content…
Each time I run through a different scenario, I become more aware of the process and I go through personal growth in my journey to become an effective leader. The Project Management Hut blog entry reminds me that I need to have constant, transparent and effective communication with the stakeholders. I need to be willing to invest my energy and time to effectively plan ahead and provide solutions to my team when I am delivering hurdles. Keeping a calm, cool, and collected attitude, even when curveballs are thrown, signifies a strong leader. When an egregious amount of errors or flaws occur during a project, a poor leader will be effected by it negatively and lose control of their team. A poor leader gets frustrated, angry, or even depressed during periods of struggles. To become a truly effective leader, one must encapsulate the various behaviors related to the aforementioned course learnings in his/her persona and demonstrate such behaviors daily. This course has allowed me to identify four behaviors that all leaders must portray to be effective. The first of which is that a leader must be inspirational. To do so, a leader must set the appropriate vision and direction for the organization and provide a path to achieving defined goals. Additionally, a leader must induce the proper levels of motivation so that each employee has sufficient incentive to work towards the organization’s goals. As discussed in the class, motivation can be accomplished by factors such as rewarding hard work and providing the correct opportunities to employees. While these are motivating in that employees desire to be fairly compensated and to be doing work they deem valuable, inspiration comes more from organizational culture. A leader will be inspirational by setting a tone that appreciates each employee’s contribution, no matter how small in scale it is. Further, employees are inspired when they work collaboratively in a group setting and can capitalize on individual strengths to drive organizational goals.
Project management is a discipline based on careful planning, organization, motivation and control of resources to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria. Since every project is unique in nature, a project manager must learn to adapt and identify key areas to drive success. Thus, as a learning initiative, we were given a project to manage through a simulation program named Sim4Project. The emphasis of this simulation was on learning-by-doing, just like in a real-life project. Sim4Project provided a good mix of theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on experience. Professor Leonie gave feedbacks at the end of each period to ensure we were incorporating the project management principles learned in the classroom.
As a project team leader with an ever growing and dynamic project base, which often has four or five projects running simultaneously, this project leader has recognized the need for an authentic leadership vision that inspires others within the organization and correlated project teams to share the vision. Establishing consensus and evaluating the implementation of a vision process will be addressed within this document along with a step by step vision implementation process where a positive vision is created and fostered within this project oriented organization. The vision implementation process will consist of: a) eliciting a sense of urgency for implementing the vision; b) developing an expert vision implementation project team, c) developing interaction strategies where feedback is valued from the entire team, d) navigate challenges through scenario planning sessions, e) modify project strategies so changes are accepted and implemented quickly, and f) document and record project progress, obstacles and lessons learned. In conclusion, there will be a summary of what success within an authentic leadership organizational vision entails.
