Introduction
Project management is a discipline based on careful planning, organization, motivation and control of resources to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria. Since every project is unique in nature, a project manager must learn to adapt and identify key areas to drive success. Thus, as a learning initiative, we were given a project to manage through a simulation program named Sim4Project. The emphasis of this simulation was on learning-by-doing, just like in a real-life project. Sim4Project provided a good mix of theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on experience. Professor Leonie gave feedbacks at the end of each period to ensure we were incorporating the project management principles learned in the classroom.

Throwing parties and having constructive meeting between individual members of the team are very useful and needed to keep the team on track and their spirit high. However, this didn’t work well in my case. Sending my team members to training really helped fill out some of the gaps in their skills and cut on hiring cost. For example, I’ve sent my Design Engineer to learn some negotiation techniques and quality principles which really helped on periods 7 and 8. The WBS is a key decider of a project completion and success. As we’ve learned in class the WBS defines the project’s scope and any changes in the WBS will affect the scope of the project and vis-versa. If we weren’t provided with the detailed WBS of the project at the start, I wouldn’t know exactly how to allocate resources for each period. To think that a PM is responsible to develop a workable project WBS , using techniques like Top-Down and Bottom-Up, is very mind bottling and impressive. I’ve also learned of the importance of budget allocation. As stated earlier, I had a little bit of budgeting issues throughout the simulation. Even though I was over budget, like everybody in the class, I wasn’t too far off.
Finally, I’ve learned the importance of looking ahead on the schedule to make decisions. The point of looking at upcoming activities is a good practice for a PM to make sure he/she will be ready when times come. By analyzing two to three periods ahead, I was able to anticipate and keep track of my resources and spending especially in periods where parallel tasks were executed. It wasn’t a perfect 10/10 hindsight but still useful.

Information technology (IT) project management in the domain of public education can be a complex undertaking fraught with challenges and risks. The ability to effectively oversee a project, which is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result (Project Management Institute, 2013), can be crucial in supporting academic initiatives and engagement in school settings. This paper will describe and then reflect upon the experience of being tasked with the project of creating a mobile lab at North Saanich Middle School. The reflective portion will examine the process through the perspectives gained because of the subject matter presented in PJMT 501 as the beginning of this course coincided with the start of the implementation phase and continues concurrently with the closeout phases (Schwalbe, 2010, p. 58) of the project. Specifically, three examples of how scope, time, and cost goals (Schwalbe, 2010, p.9) became unbalanced will be examined and a reflection on how to learn from these experiences will be forwarded. This perspective will help to describe how the exposure and deeper understanding of the basic principles of Project Management not only influenced the completion of this project but also will influence future approaches to other IT projects.
Project Management is quickly becoming a field of study and importance in the business world. Project Management is a broad term referencing the necessary steps taken by management to ensure a product is feasible before and during implementation. Kent Beck, the project leader will find using the WBS to make complex projects more manageable as it is designed to help break down projects into manageable chunks that can be effectively estimated and supervised. By creating a WBS include several benefits. For example it can help assist with accurate project company, helps with assigning responsibilities, shows the control points, project milestones, and allows for more accurate estimation of the triple constraint (cost, risk, and time) therefore helping to explain the project scope to stakeholders.

Finally, this paper also identifies and prioritizes major constraints that are associated with this project.
In the globalized economy, Successful project managers are in much demand across many industries. Organizations strongly need experienced project managers to lead their staff to accomplish their business goals and deliver successful projects. In an increasingly complex environment, project managers need to turn into many roles and have all kinds of responsibilities at each level of management within an organization. I am committed to developing my professional skills to allow me to work to the fullest of my potential, and as a consequence I am highly motivated to study for an MSc in Project Management. I believe that it is essential for project managers to be equipped with the skills that are necessary to allow ambitious projects to be completed on budget, on time, and according to their original specifications, and I believe that completing this master’s is the best way to acquire those skills.
