Information technology (IT) project management in the domain of public education can be a complex undertaking fraught with challenges and risks. The ability to effectively oversee a project, which is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result (Project Management Institute, 2013), can be crucial in supporting academic initiatives and engagement in school settings. This paper will describe and then reflect upon the experience of being tasked with the project of creating a mobile lab at North Saanich Middle School. The reflective portion will examine the process through the perspectives gained because of the subject matter presented in PJMT 501 as the beginning of this course coincided with the start of the implementation phase and continues concurrently with the closeout phases (Schwalbe, 2010, p. 58) of the project. Specifically, three examples of how scope, time, and cost goals (Schwalbe, 2010, p.9) became unbalanced will be examined and a reflection on how to learn from these experiences will be forwarded. This perspective will help to describe how the exposure and deeper understanding of the basic principles of Project Management not only influenced the completion of this project but also will influence future approaches to other IT projects. …show more content…
Although the life cycle of the Mobile Lab project passed through an initial, intermediate, and final, phase (Project Management Institute, 2013, p. 38) which culminated in the creation of a functioning mobile lab, little else of Newton’s vision of success can be attributed to this

Information Technology (IT) Project Management is a critical issue for all organizations because the failure rates of IT projects are alarming (Whittaker, 1999). A Gartner study suggests that about 75% of IT projects based in the United States of America (USA) are deemed as failures by the stakeholders (Waters 2008).

Project management is a discipline based on careful planning, organization, motivation and control of resources to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria. Since every project is unique in nature, a project manager must learn to adapt and identify key areas to drive success. Thus, as a learning initiative, we were given a project to manage through a simulation program named Sim4Project. The emphasis of this simulation was on learning-by-doing, just like in a real-life project. Sim4Project provided a good mix of theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on experience. Professor Leonie gave feedbacks at the end of each period to ensure we were incorporating the project management principles learned in the classroom.
IT is very useful for any company for satisfying their operational and functional needs. Due to the huge development in IT projects, companies need to keep themselves aware of changes in the global world. Companies must give more importance to ICT projects to become more popular in the competitive world. There are two different lifecycles that work together throughout the course of every project. One describes all the tasks that must be completed to produce a particular product and the second explains how to manage a product. Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities in order to achieve projects requirements, usually to time and budget.

They have a balanced set of strong metrics and internal communities to maintain personalized methodologies and tools to achieve project deliverables. However, in a large technology company, project management is complicated as the business needs keep changing with the demanding stakeholders from traditional organizations. Project management in an IT organization ensures that a factual technology is applied to provide a direct solution to the organization.
