When assessing my current writing ability, I recognize my ability to efficiently relay a message; however, I struggle with using strong phrases and advanced writing. When I begin drafting a paper, translating my thoughts and ideas into words comes naturally, and I do not get lost in the process. As mentioned previously, the general areas that need improvement include using strong vocabulary to convey a professional level of writing. Also, I believe that I need to work on transition phrases between ideas.
1A – Specific areas for improvement
I have a few specific problem areas for improving my writing. For instance, I struggle with condensing my ideas and message. Because I fear cutting out portions will detract from my goal or message. Another

One of these goals would be to research examples of effective writing demonstrating the ways to connect with my audience. This strategy will improve my writing dramatically. Another way to achieve my goals is to attend a session with the Mays Communication Lab or University Writing Center. They have available resources needed to create an effective message within my writing. With their tips and techniques, I will be able to edit my work and strengthen my writing skills. I also plan to proofread my documents every time I write something. Sending my writing to someone else to make sure that it flows and has a clear message will also be …show more content…
I hope to be at a point where I speak with confidence, clarity, and organization. By May 2017, my goal is to incorporate a structured way to organize my thoughts into an effective speech. I want to be able to speak about ideas in a way that will connect to the audience and impact them. My goal is to walk into any public speaking situation without any kind of reservations or fears.
3 – How will I get there?
There are a few ways that I will reach my goals for May 2017. With constant practice of public speaking in the MS Business program, I will refine my public speaking skills and assist myself in overcoming fear. Along with practicing, I will record and watch myself present; so that I may see areas of improvement this way. With the use of my peers, I will be able to receive feedback on how they perceive my public speaking. They will not only will they be able to constructively critique my presentation skills but also help me organize my thoughts.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, I have a lot of areas of improvement when it comes to writing and public speaking. I hope that by the time I graduate, I will be able to accomplish my goals of becoming a more effective writer and speaker. With all of the resources that are available to me, I should have no problem reaching these goals. By the end of the program, I will convey my message effectively through writing and
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
“Draft NO. 4” by John McPhee, issued April 29, 2016, explains tips and strategies a writer can use to become the best of their ability and how drafts help strengthen a paper. He interprets how great writers have difficulties writing and not to be discouraged by the struggles that comes along with writing. He is writing to anyone who is a writer, whether they portray that image or not. McPhee is very informative in “Draft NO. 4” and has glimps of humor, also. In “Draft NO. 4”, McPhee explains tips such as writing with confidence, accumulating experience, drawing boxes around different words, and using dictionaries when writing a well-written paper. I agree with these points because they will help not only novice writers but also the most experienced
Though I had some strong points in my informative speech, I still feel there was a lot I could improve upon. I could not recognize any vocalized pauses but I noticed that at certain points of speech where I would transition from one point to another, I would push my glasses up. I don’t remember if this was because my glasses were actually slipping down or because I was nervous. Also, after watching my video, I found that in the beginning of the speech I was swaying a lot, but because I was standing behind the table it wasn’t that noticeable. The one major thing I would change is my choice to stand behind the table. It was something I did unconsciously and out of habit of usually speaking behind a podium, and I did not notice I did it until
Knowing what I can do well is just important as knowing what needs improvement. My strongest attributes are being able to perform under pressure and multitasking. This is necessary to sell products and perform services that benefit the customer. The value of getting the job done correctly and on time correlates to returning customers and repeat business. My competitive advantage over others in the same industry is the high level of service we offer. I don’t just push a product on a client. I listen to what they want and need, make suggestions for the best available solutions; and I also help them with cost savings and environmentally friendly alternatives. One weakness I have and need to work on is public speaking. As I grow in my career and move into managerial leader positions, I will have a lot more opportunities to give speeches. I plan to work on my public speaking skills by practicing and making incremental changes to constantly improve. It’s not a matter of being shy in front of a group. It’s more of a point to be well prepared for the occasion and motivated to do a good job. To stay prepared for opportunities and change, I plan on continuing my education in the business field, and learning as much as possible about my job. I will also need to stay up-to-date with current issues in my external and internal
There are times when I have trouble writing and that is why I have goals to fix all the things that are bad about my writing. With the advice from the authors I will be able to achieve some of my goals by putting some of it to use in my writing by either getting rid of sentences I don’t need, writing something on a subject that I would be interested in, or lastly keep thinking and rewriting till I get it right. All of those will help make me better at writing because it would probably fix things that I need help on when I write. In the future I would probably need to to work on more things to improve but if I work hard on it I would probably be able to fix my mistakes as I continue
Scott Adams once said, “We don 't always have an accurate view of our own potential. I think most people who are frightened of public speaking and can 't imagine they might feel different as a result of training. Don 't assume you know how much potential you have. Sometimes the only way to know what you can do is to test yourself.” This quote exemplifies the importance of public speaking and stresses the importance of how practice makes perfect. Without practice, we lose confidence in ourselves which prevents us from pushing forward. Therefore, this quote affirms that a speaker isn 't born, they are made. This course has helped me improve my confidence in public speaking, helped me create a proper outline in order to create a well written speech,
Every time when I have to do a writing assignment I have to go through the similar experience. If I have to make a list with all of my writing problems, the number one will be “Articles” For an ESL student, it is really difficult to understand when and what article should be used. Thus, articles “a” and “the” look tricky for me. Another problem for me is prepositions. Many times I am using “about” instead of “for”, and it does not make sense for me why “wishing for a new bike” is correct and “wishing about a new bike” is wrong. Using the correct verb tense is another issue for me. A lot of times I use simple verb tenses, and I am struggling with perfect verb tenses. Punctuation also causes problems for me in my writing process, especially
This goal will help me to become a better and more creative writer that I strive to be. My long range goal as a writer is to be more creative and to be entertaining in my writing so that many readers will be entertained with what I have written for them and also have them want to read more. To become a better writer, I should read more books and also be more attentive during learning, so that I can process the information better to improve my skills. I believe this will not only help with my grades and essays, but it will also increase my writing skills to be an overall better
Moving on, Some of my strengths in this informative speech I believe were speaking in a proper tone of voice, having lots of information about the topic, and finally making the speech interesting to hear. However they are some things I need to work on such as being on proper time, better sources and also trying to be more relax when I present so I don’t breeze through my speech. With some more work and making a little adjustment. I know that I could give a better and more informative speech that people would and love and be interested about.

My goals for this class are fairly numerous, but all are based on all around knowledge and improvement of public speaking in a general sense. I want to be able to get up in front of a group of people and deliver a message in a way that makes people want to listen. I am planning a career in the field of psychology, and as much as I may not like it, I think public speaking will definitely show its face many times. My specific goals for the course include improving on my stance, speaking more clearly, and improving on my fear of speaking in front of a large group.
As for me personally, I want to be able to speak effectively to not only to become a leading light one day, but to also communicate clearly with others. When it comes to speaking, a weakness I have is expressing myself well to other people. I usually know what I’m thinking, but do not express my thoughts in such a way that are understood to others. For example, I may want to get the point across that for treating cancer, chemotherapy is not the best treatment if used for long, gruesome periods of time. However, when I start to explain my thinking I may use the wrong set of words, a little twisted grammar, or simply, have a little bit of anxiety. Doing a little bit of searching, I determined that the anxiety I get when speaking is the main weakness I need to master to become an effective speaker. “SkillsYouNeed”- a skill driven, assessment based website – opened my eyes to some specific strategies I should take. When speaking to others I should use good breathing, volume to be heard, clarity to be understood, and variety to add interest. Using these strategies should help me become better at effective speaking and slowly diminish my anxiety. In the meantime, while I am learning these strategies I will continue to use my strengths in listening and being patient with others, to be help balance my
The way we communicate can be very important in representing ourselves in our community. In the beginning, of the semester, we watched a movie regarding a royal member whom was looked down upon because of his verbal pauses. However, throughout the movie he learns to work with his speaking style. He may have not completely eliminated the flaw but, he did learn how to overcome and adjust with it is style of public speaking. Public speaking is very power it as the authority to make an audience shock, upset, surprised, disbelief, and even to become inspired. By using structure in a speech and applying ethos, pathos, and logos can create a deeper connection to the audience. Therefore, the most impactful part of a speech is its introduction. Such that if the speaker implies a power attention getter they are able to deliver their message successfully. In my class presentation, the times I won speaker of the day I noticed that within my speech the only reason why I was selected was because I provided a strong attention getter and because my voice was very loud and it had minimal of verbal pauses. I have learned that any speech can be delivered successfully when the elements of structure and practiced are present. For most of my presentation to prepare I would practice my speech by recording myself with a tape recorder and then replying. This allowed
