My Writing Style

There are endless types of writing styles that people use. They use the one that they believe expresses their thoughts most clearly. I’m not sure if my writing style is part of those that are often used and to be honest, I do not know what type of style I use when I write. I think that the hardest part about writing is just getting started. That is why when I have a writing assignments I always start by using an I-chart. The I-chart is kind of shaped like an I, I learned how to make one when I was in elementary and it always has been useful for when I need to write. One of my goals that I want to achieve is be able to improve my wording and be able to get rid of sentences that I would not need without someone telling me to. When I read “how to write with style” and it stated “If a sentence, no matter how excellent does not illuminate your subject in some new and useful way, scratch it out” (Kurt Vonnegut,page 2). It gave me the idea that I could improve my writing by getting rid of a sentence that does not belong. Before I read this advice, I didn’t think of trying to get rid of any of the sentences that were in my essays because they felt like they should be there. However, now I realize that there are always different ways to do things that will help me write better. When I write my essays and do the rough draft, I will try and get rid of sentences that don’t need to be there and put Kurt Vonnegut’s idea into practice. Another goal that I want to start working on would be to improve how I cite other people’s work into my writing. When I cite others work I’m not sure if I correctly put the quote in my writing the right way. The last goal that I have is that I want to be able to put my ideas into sentences and be able write what I want to say. When I read the article “simplicity” it said “Keep thinking and rewriting until you say what you want to say” (William Zinsser,page 3). There are times when I have trouble writing and that is why I have goals to fix all the things that are bad about my writing. With the advice from the authors I will be able to achieve some of my goals by putting some of it to use in my writing by either getting rid of sentences I don’t need, writing something on a subject that I would be interested in, or lastly keep thinking and rewriting till I get it right. All of those will help make me better at writing because it would probably fix things that I need help on when I write. In the future I would probably need to to work on more things to improve but if I work hard on it I would probably be able to fix my mistakes as I continue
