There are endless types of writing styles that people use. They use the one that they believe expresses their thoughts most clearly. I’m not sure if my writing style is part of those that are often used and to be honest, I do not know what type of style I use when I write. I think that the hardest part about writing is just getting started. That is why when I have a writing assignments I always start by using an I-chart. The I-chart is kind of shaped like an I, I learned how to make one when I was in elementary and it always has been useful for when I need to write. One of my goals that I want to achieve is be able to improve my wording and be able to get rid of sentences that I would not need without someone telling me to. When I read “how to write with style” and it stated “If a sentence, no matter how excellent does not illuminate your subject in some new and useful way, scratch it out” (Kurt Vonnegut,page 2). It gave me the idea that I could improve my writing by getting rid of a sentence that does not belong. Before I read this advice, I didn’t think of trying to get rid of any of the sentences that were in my essays because they felt like they should be there. However, now I realize that there are always different ways to do things that will help me write better. When I write my essays and do the rough draft, I will try and get rid of sentences that don’t need to be there and put Kurt Vonnegut’s idea into practice. Another goal that I want to start working on would be to improve how I cite other people’s work into my writing. When I cite others work I’m not sure if I correctly put the quote in my writing the right way. The last goal that I have is that I want to be able to put my ideas into sentences and be able write what I want to say. When I read the article “simplicity” it said “Keep thinking and rewriting until you say what you want to say” (William Zinsser,page 3). There are times when I have trouble writing and that is why I have goals to fix all the things that are bad about my writing. With the advice from the authors I will be able to achieve some of my goals by putting some of it to use in my writing by either getting rid of sentences I don’t need, writing something on a subject that I would be interested in, or lastly keep thinking and rewriting till I get it right. All of those will help make me better at writing because it would probably fix things that I need help on when I write. In the future I would probably need to to work on more things to improve but if I work hard on it I would probably be able to fix my mistakes as I continue
I agree with what Allen states in the article “The Inspired Writer vs. the Real Writer” because of how much my writing skills had evolved over the years. When I first started in high school, I believed I was a horrible writer and I struggled a lot just to write a few paragraphs. However, after determination, and several trials and errors, I was able to improve greatly on my skills. In Irvin’s article, “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” goes over the myths about writing. When I first started to write essays, I believed some of the myths that Irvin talks about in the article. Such myths were the five paragraph essay and the use of “I.” However, the more experience I gained in writing, the more I realized how the five paragraph essay is more of a suggestion. The format might had helped when I first started, but I had grown apart of it now. In addition, I had learned how the use of “I” is situational. In some of my past essays, I have used “I” to help develop my essays. In Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer,” it mentions the importance of Reading Like a Writer. When I first started writing essays in high school, my essays were cookie cutter. The essays were not imaginative and lack literary devices. However, the more I payed attention to how an author writes, the more creative my essays become. I am able to include methods that give creativity in my writing,
While there are people who love to read and write, there are others that do not. When a student is required to read a book for a class and that student does not enjoy reading, there are very few things they would rather do less. And when that book’s topic is about learning how to write that is the worst of it. When I was assigned to read Writing with Style by John R. Trimble, my immediate thought was that this book and assignment was going to be a struggle to get through. To my pleasant surprise, I couldn’t have been more wrong. When I read “Proficiency” by Shannon Nichols I really felt for her. I understood and resonated with her story perfectly, especially when she stated “After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about.” (83). After I failed my writing assignment I was so embarrassed and didn’t want to write again but obviously, I had to. I always doubt the things I am going to say or which order I am going to organize the essay in. I try so hard to make sure all my sentences are cohesive and all my ideas connect to each other and the main concept but sometimes it just seems that when I keep messing with one little sentence or paragraph I just makes things worse.
The Pulitzer Prize winning writer N. Scott Momaday has become known as a very distinctive writer who depicts the stories of the Native American life in almost poetic ways. He does an excellent job of transporting the reader from the black and white pages of a book, to a world where every detail is pointed out and every emotion felt when reading one of Momaday’s books or other writings. This style of writing that Momaday uses is very evident in his work “The Way to Rainy Mountain,” and made even more apparent by reading a review of the book House Made of Dawn found on a web site run by HarperCollins Publishers.
One must remember that writing style is not something that just happens, but rather something that is developed. With the help of guides like Elements of Style, or books like Style Toward Clarity and Grace, one can begin to develop one.
Many different styles of writing exist in the world. Because there are many different writers who write many different ways, and no specific "correct" style of writing, various people find themselves writing in a variety of ways. people write quickly, and others do not write as fast. Some people write en masse and others work one paragraph at a time. Personally, my writing style could best be compared to a wrecking ball. The two may seem immensely different, but – surprisingly – the two share many similarities and, after considering my past writing experiences and encounters, I find that no other image provides as appropriate a comparison to my writing as that of an old-fashioned, demolition wrecking ball.
Prior to starting my studies at University, I believed I had a firm grasp on the English language and was a more than competent writer. My history as a songwriter gave me the confidence to express myself clearly and make strong statements. Regular comments in the feedback I received, suggested that I needed to condense my sentences. It had been fifteen years since I last studied and I quickly discovered that academic style writing was a register I was unfamiliar with. I According to Grellier and Goerke (2014) a key element in academic writing is being kind to the reader. This meant using simple language where possible rather than demonstrating grandiloquence. I also discovered that my use of pronouns sometimes leave the reader with too much work to do. I assume the reader can follow my thought process; however, I now understand that I must make my academic writing as simple as possible. Grellier and Goerke (2014) suggest writing in the active voice as often as possible and I know by using too many pronouns my writing can be too passive.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. Developing an unambiguous definition of good writing style has been challenging. I have one sense that good style can only be defined by a reader. Over my many years of writing essays and attempting to find my voice I have discovered and tested many different processes. Having an adaptive writing style is an indispensible tool in every writer’s kit. No matter what the topic of discussion, a writer must possess the ability to convey a meaningful message to the audience they are addressing. The challenge lies in converting discussions from an academic journal or technical research document to a level understandable by that general audience to which you are addressing. In this paper, I will discuss how I approach choices of vocabulary, sentence length, and sentence structure when adapting a piece of technical or specialized writing.
Writing style is completely malleable. In this sense, style is effected by the author’s mood, intended audience, knowledge on the topic, attitude toward the topic, environment and state of consciousness-- give or take. Some may even say that the movement of the moon changes one’s ability to bring words together. But that is not the whole story. Given a group of fifty students, all generally similar, put in the same environment, taught by the same teacher using the same techniques (et c), you will have fifty different styles. In this light, the argument about the essence of style is very much like the nature verses nurture argument. I believe that a certain amount of one’s style is just how they are hardwired. Albeit, style has its foundation in the mechanics and basic guidelines on what constitutes good writing.
All of my professors ask us to write essays and analysis. All of my assignments have a purpose in which they give me a certain tone to write in. Most of my work for English is writing about a specific story and analyzing the different methods the author used in order to portray a certain message or idea. For my sociology class, we are often asked to write analysis about situations we encounter every day. These two different classes ask me to write in different styles.
