My Adaptive Writing Style

Having an adaptive writing style is an indispensible tool in every writer’s kit. No matter what the topic of discussion, a writer must possess the ability to convey a meaningful message to the audience they are addressing. The challenge lies in converting discussions from an academic journal or technical research document to a level understandable by that general audience to which you are addressing. In this paper, I will discuss how I approach choices of vocabulary, sentence length, and sentence structure when adapting a piece of technical or specialized writing.

When adapting for a specific audience, the vocabulary you choose will immediately set the tone for the reader. In order to choose the correct verbiage, you must have an understanding

of the overall demographic you are addressing. Attempting to explain a scientific study to someone with no scientific background could prove challenging, especially if trying to convey the message using the same scientific terms. As a technique, I tend to avoid utilizing the same terminology as a subject matter expert when introducing a new topic. Taking the time to explain a term prevents confusion and a loss of interest from the reader. Additionally, writing at a level that caters to the audience is a key component to maintaining that reader’s interest. In my experience, once you’ve lost a reader, it’s hard to regain their attention.
Another important factor I consider when adapting to an audience is sentence length and structure. While a verbose sentence may seem necessary, breaking up a thought may be a better approach. A simple, well structured sentence keeps the reader involved. Additionally, a shorter sentence allows the reader to absorb the content on the first read versus having to go back and read the sentence multiple times. Again, this goes back to maintaining the reader’s attention. By utilizing a more succinct sentence, the reader is able to remain focused on the key points without being distracted. It would be unfortunate to dilute the overall message or lose your audience because of a poorly structured sentence.
As a writer, I tend to be more analytical in my style. While this may be beneficial in a specific situation, I still have to account for the audience and for the overall purpose of my writing. Keeping the reader’s attention should always be a focus. Remaining adaptive in my writing style has allowed me to be successful regardless of my reader’s previous experience on the subject.
