As a writer, I think I grew most in sentence fluency. I was able to learn how rearrange my sentences, not use th- words too much in the beginning of a sentence, and combining more sentences. My favorite types of writing are argumentative and persuasive because they help spread my own opinion on what I believe as well as get me very engaged in the topic I am writing about since I want to prove the opposing side that my opinion is better or more correct. It also can help me spread a message on what I believe and on what area I side on in an argument. One of my least favorite writings are informative essays where someone is assigned a topic such as global warming or hydro-electric dams because of how monotonous and boring they are to write since you’re almost restating details you already knew. …show more content…
This goal will help me to become a better and more creative writer that I strive to be. My long range goal as a writer is to be more creative and to be entertaining in my writing so that many readers will be entertained with what I have written for them and also have them want to read more. To become a better writer, I should read more books and also be more attentive during learning, so that I can process the information better to improve my skills. I believe this will not only help with my grades and essays, but it will also increase my writing skills to be an overall better
In my past writing assignments it seemed to be that we were learning everything step by step, where as in college more is expected from me as a writer. As a high school student it was quite easy to push everything off till the last moment. Those two o'clock nights were very frequent when a six-page research paper was due the next day. As a college student the requirements are more challenging and not something that can be pushed back till the very last second. It seems strange to me that starting earlier for a college paper and working twice as hard on it, receiving a lower grade on it than I would have in high school is upsetting to think about, but is so true. When coming into the semester I was unaware of what was expected from me, but as the semester progressed I was able to get a better understanding of the course and how to look critically at myself as a writer. I know that these are qualities that I will use for many years to come.
The following final drafts, drafts, notes, and peer review letters represent my growth as a writer in the span of one semester. I learned quite a bit about myself and the things i can do to improve my writing and the methods of doing proper research in order to write a proper research essay. Though i have seen an improvement within these essays, i feel i still have much to practice upon.
Over my career of schooling my writing has changed dramatically at times and very little at others. Through my years of schooling people have determined my main weaknesses and strengths that I should work on with my writing. My biggest weakness is writing introductions and conclusions they must be so complicated and require so much thought to be defined as good. I excel at writing body paragraphs and explaining all the facts that back up your main ideas though.
My Growth as a Writer Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have taken several college courses and nearly all of them require writing in some form. However, before taking this class, not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I am certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me.
The two most important things this goal focuses on is time management and the use of sources. By managing their time efficiently, writers are able to thoroughly comb through the information they want to add and then create a detailed outline. By setting the appropriate amount of time aside to go through sources, the writer can synthesis the most accurate, best sources and evaluate the author 's position and bias. This learning goal helped me individualize my drafting time because I was not being tugged along by a detailed class schedule. The other way I benefited from it was, I know put in more focus to my sources instead of picking the first article on Google. Both of these helped develop my
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
I have never liked writing; I always thought it was a waste of time. It was a great therapy but I never found academic writing to be useful just tedious. Only ever writing when I had too made it harder for my writing skills to grow or improve in any way. I have not taken an English class since the 10th grade, even then I never gave it much effort, just doing what I had to so I could pass the class. Then I jump in to College English 1010, I feel like I do well in all other subjects but this one. English is my worst nightmare.
Over the course of the second semester of my freshman campaign at Seton Hall my overall skills as a writer have been improved and more refined. The biggest difference I saw in my work since I arrived here was the maturity of my writing and the improved research and analysis skills that I first developed in high school. But as I look back on my work and myself as a writer I believe that the areas where I have grown the most is my creativity and my ability to use that creative thinking to formulate a unique thesis statement about a characters involvement in a story. I realized my creativity as a writer during the assignment where we had to choose a song and poem that shared the same “image” and then write about that image. I chose the song “100 Years” by Five for Fighting and the poem “What Happened to the Happy Days?” by Angie Flores. The image that they created was “of a person sitting and thinking back on how fast life has gone by. A daydream about going back to a time where everything was simple and there was nothing to truly worry about, a time where life was how life should be,” (Leach). I creatively thought about how these 2 lyrical pieces connected as well as their differences. I realized that the two pieces portrayed that image but in opposite ways, which is something I wouldn’t have initially realized if I didn’t spend time trying to find a unique connection of image between the two pieces. Through spending time trying to uniquely and creatively find ways to write about things I was able to complete a prompt that I thought was one of the most challenging I’ve ever had to write about. My educational goals are important to me. My goals are to come out of English 100 and be able to write any kind of memo, document, or resume; because I know someday every one of these writing projects will become useful.
One goal is I want to see what I am capable of. I have a terrible habit where I doubt myself, and that doubt sometimes leads me missing out on life changing opportunities. There’s a saying that goes, “Doubt kills more dreams than future ever will” which really emphasizes how doubt is what makes us runs away from our hopes, goals, and dreams. It is something that makes us terribly afraid to try something new or make an effort with things. However, I truly want to not run away from that doubt, but to be able to overcome it. Even though I may be doubtful at times, I am full of determination to pursue excellence and strive to do my best in everything. For example, I want to see how great I can make my education be in high school. I have a strong connection and commitment when it comes to learning because it’s always a joy and experience when it comes to knowing new things. I believe that knowledge is one great element in life where it leads to the highest success, and it can only be acquired one way through diligence and effort. When it comes to my education, I make sure to not take it for granted and to never give up, even if it may feel brutal at times. In my opinion, I care what I learn and put towards my education rather than the grade given since with all the effort and work I put towards to what I am told, the grade follows. However, that does not mean that I am careless about my grades. I greatly cherish school and can be an example towards others at Rocky Mountain when it comes to setting academic goals and aspiring all the knowledge I want in my education. From to beginning of Ninth grade to date I have grown in leaps and bounds in numerous areas of writing. At the beginning of Ninth grade I wrote similarly to a middle schooler, now, I have transitioned to writing as a high schooler. Some traits of a high school writer are sentence fluency, vocabulary, transitions, simple sentence starts, and a variety of words. Long-term goals offer long-term success. Three goals that I hope to achieve in my life are practicing orthodontics, mastering how to think before I speak, and raising my future children well.
