Finding the assistance needed for my math work definitely poses a challenge if the professor does not hold office hours because of their position. In high school, office hours play a huge role in the academic success of students since we depend on that time to be able to understand or learn more about the academic topic. Although I rarely take the time to attend office hours (since I participate in extracurriculars), I understand the importance of that time, and I attend when it is necessary. However, I am aware of other resources that are available to me if office hours are not available to me. It is necessary to note, however, that not every source of assistance will function if other factors get in the way of using that assistance. For that reason, I think it is important that students take the necessary steps to identify which resource will support them the most. …show more content…
My conflict is that my adjunct professor is only on campus for class; therefore, he does not hold office hours. I first think about the level of confusion or struggle I have with my math work. If the origin of my struggle lies in memorization, I know that I can help myself. Students sometimes do not realize that they are a resource to themselves. Being self-aware and honest about how much I am struggling is important because I never know when I can be of my own assistance. For instance, if I am struggling to memorize the Quadratic Formula, I can write it down on sticky notes and paste them in places I will look to often. I am confident in my strategy because I am aware that I am a visual learner. I knew that I could assist myself because I analyzed the problem before panicking. My problem is now solved since I assisted myself with my math work. However, if I know that I am struggling beyond my control, I know that I need to find another source of
My experiences with tutoring others has taught me that it satisfies me to help others understand and learn. As you teach others you learn about the different ways you handle situations and solve issues as well. I’ve always been the person that my classmates come up to for help, but it wasn’t till grade 10 until I officially started tutoring math, mainly Pre-Calculus 12. In grade 11, I continued tutoring, but this time I focused on a single individual, and that brought up challenges of creating a suitable relationship, that becomes the foundation for effective learning. I was struggled when I started learning how to use Java like, datatypes, objects, and several other methods. It was frustrated at the beginning, but never give up as I tried my harder to understand when and how to use in Java. I took Computational Problem Solving in the Information Domain II last semester (retake again this semester due to the pass-fail test policy), I was actively involved with my partners in mini project and final project. For the mini project, my partner and I were working on Halma which allow piece to move diagonal, left or right and we were not able to get it done on time due to two weeks frustration of trying to make a piece move. For the final project, Othello (or Reversi) was the hardest challenge for my team to figure out when it comes to move a piece in specific position. I am willing to learn and try new things, even if it includes struggling. As of how I can use my growth mindset in this class can start off with willing to learn new types of outlines or learning to extend my vocabulary and writing. Like many I struggle with putting together an essay, but I’m sure that with the mindset I carry and the knowledge of my professor anything can become possible. Sometimes I am very intellectually challenged in certain subjects and challenges even containing outside of school. I have ADD but I don’t take medicine for it, so it is really for me to focus at school. I have some family problems also they sidetrack my learning and thoughts during school and everyday life. I feel like these family problems sidetrack me from being a really good student to just being a good student. Both of my grandmas passed away in 2015, which was very hard for my family especially my dad and mom. I started to struggle in school and that is when I realized I needed to do something about my work and put more effort into school. Time management is one of the most crucial factors to college success for every student in college. Firstly, while living on campus, time usually isn’t an issue to students because they live on school grounds. There are many advantages that come with time and one of them is getting to class on time. However, this is actually the opposite for commuters because getting to class on time is quite a struggle. They have to struggle to wake up earlier than usual in order to use the public transportation. Students living on campus also have more access to on-site facilities because they don’t have to worry about going home so there is no time limit on how long they occupy these areas. While registering for a college course seems to be no longer complicated, there still remains an obstacle that has been triggered so much controversy in academic environment: mandatory attendance policy. This policy, which is imposed by some schools or some professors, requires that college student must attend class regularly enough or their exam papers will be extracted some attendance points (that usually count for about 15 or 20 percent of the total grade evaluation). In my opinion, this policy is useless and burdensome to many people involved. University students should be free in choosing which classes to attend.
