My key responsibilities enlists of designing , developing , implementing and reviewing the overall school curriculum . For an effective implementation of the curriculum ,I am further responsible for recruiting staff, training teachers and developing the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) plans based on individual teacher’s need. Preparing the school’s Self-Evaluation Form (SEF),School Improvement and Action plans, and working towards improving the rating across all the indicators for the KHDA Inspection are the most important elements of my work profile. Through my experience ,I have realized that the teachers are at the centre of effective education program , getting the change initiated and preparing the change makers for the future. The teachers need to understand that their role must change with the changing face of education. It’s a teacher who can influence the learners to change their outlook towards life, to find the meaning and purpose of their life and be the change makers of the future. The role of a teacher must shift from a ‘sage on the stage’ to a ‘guide on the side’. “Transformed people transform people” Richard Rohr- If teachers can change their outlook towards teaching- learning they can transform our students who in turn will transform the future for better and be the change makers the world needs. Portfolios have long been used in some professions to showcase professional work and skill. In education, portfolios have also been used for assessment, including self-assessment (Lankes 1995; Pond et al. 1998). Both career portfolios and career passports reflect this dual focus—students assess themselves in the process of developing a product, and the resulting product showcases and documents their experiences and skills. A distinction is sometimes drawn between a portfolio as developmental and a passport as summative (Bridging the Gap 1993). With portfolios, more emphasis is put on the developmental process of self-assessment, planning, and goal-setting; with passports, more emphasis is put on the final product that sums up the results of the process and communicates them to others.
Taking the time to reflect on one’s career can increase self-awareness and enhance professional development. A career development plan is a confidential and integral document created by an individual which outlines the activities undertaken during their life. Hence, a professional development plan documents goals and skills required to accomplish dreams and aspirations. Moreover, a professional development program is reminiscent of ones’ past experiences and a glance at the future. Having a professional development plan in place is critical for graduate study to keep track of one’s progression. The principal purpose of a developmental plan is to give a description of my educational and professional background as well to explore my personal goals as it relates to my profession growth and development.
For generations teachers have been developing our future through harmony, wisdom, and intellectual adventure. A teachers' role in society is to help our youth grow and further their understandings in the principles of life. The expository essay The Role of the Teacher by Irving Layton provides a different perspective on education in the 21st century. Similar to Layton, I firmly believe that education is for the expansion of the young mind and nothing should restrict a student's ability to do so. Layton touches on a view where teachers need to be passionate about their jobs, however, teachers are not always responsible for every action the school makes, but the responsibility may lie in the hands of the school board. Layton also displays his concern for the decreasing rate of young readers and the use of humanities and how that will affect society. Personally I have been influenced by teachers in my own family. There have also been other teachers who have influenced me like I have also had other educators such as in my math course where the diversity in the techniques and skills used affected my overall experience.
They are gathered (early) during one’s professional career path, this includes; certificates of attendance for continuing education programs, diplomas for formal education, letters of appreciation for contributions to a committee/ board, and copies of protocols, procedures, clinical pathways, and education plans developed “including written personal philosophy on the profession, copies of transcripts from each college and university attended” (Lombarda, 2003). Also certificates received during completion of continuing education programs, list of in-service records attended, contributions at work for each job description, copies of annual completed skills checklists, annual evaluations, and list of mentees mentored, including professional development should be documented as well. A portfolio should be able to reflect summaries of significant roles played such as, professional presentations, written materials- such as, brochures, handouts, evaluation summary, and letters of appreciation. Copies of articles published by the professional along with the complete citations, including awarded grant funds for a project or research study, and an abstract describing the study should be included in the portfolio. The need for a continuing professional development is key and essential in one’s career. It helps one to be competent in your profession. It is supposed to be an ongoing process and should continue throughout the professional career. The ultimate results of good and planned continuing professional development is that it protects the public, the employer, the professional and the professional’s career.
In a society where kids must go to school up to the collegiate level, teaching is an impactful career choice. Teachers help contour the minds of future leaders of the world. Furthermore, teachers play a crucial role in guiding students to the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to succeed in life, and teachers lead students to make informed decisions on any topic the meet in the future. As a teacher, a person must relinquish their knowledge onto students. Finally, they must prepare their students for all the obstacles they will face later in life.

Along these two weeks we have been prompt to make a recall to our own way of learning and why we became a teacher: Was it because coincidence, due to life circumstances, maybe because family tradition, was it a conscious decision or because someone influenced us? Whatever the answer is, we have to face reality and be conscious that being a teacher does not only means to teach a lesson and asses students learning. It requires playing the different roles a teacher must perform whenever is needed and required by our learners, identify our pupils needs and preferences, respecting their integrity and individuality but influencing and motivating them to improve themselves and become independent.
Upon graduating from Concord College, I will attend graduate school and receive my Master’s degree in Education. I will be teaching at different places around the country, as I will be moving frequently. My future occupational plans include working with the Department of Defense school systems. I will use my educational background and my life experiences to enlighten and teach my students.
It must be admitted that, there are not only the standards-based teachers but also incredibly giving educators, who create open environments where students can deepen their inquiries, where child’s intellectual, emotional, social and moral potentials are carefully cultivated and guided. More specifically, the role and the mission of the real teacher are to positively inspire the students. Personally I have never thought that the greatest teacher is the one who can become the real student, in other words - transformative. I guess this is the window into becoming a real teacher. As a teacher, my impact can be measured in the transformation of my students as they transform and redefine me. My own observations reveal that real teachers see what is good and worthwhile in their students, hear their students. I’ve learnt that transformative learning helps me to be authentic, individuated and critically reflective practitioner. Richard Dufour (2000), author of Why Teach expressed his views on the profession first by stating that teaching is not the career for everyone.
