According to the American Associate of Colleges of Nursing, the minimal requirement to work as a professional nurse is a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. Because the health care setting is shifting away from hospital centers to outpatient settings, this has created a demand for nurses to have a higher level of education to function independently (AACN, 2012). I decided to pursue a BSN at a City University of New York, York College City University where I earned a BSN degree in 2014. Since I have met the minimal standard to work as a professional nurse; I decided to explore other options where I can earn a Master’s of Science in Nursing Education. I have examined a few schools, but the one that resonates with me is Stony Brook University. Their vision to allow students to meet their highest potential and their program offer flexibility and
The national shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) has helped generate formidable interest in the nursing profession among people entering the workforce and those pursuing a career change. According to a report issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service in 2002, the national population is continuing to grow and age and medical services continue to advance, so the need for nurses will continue to increase. They report from 2000 to 2020 the predicted shortage of nurses is expected to grow to 29 percent, compared to a 6 percent shortage in 2000. With the projected supply, demand, and shortage of registered nurses and nursing salaries ever-increasing, the nursing profession can offer countless opportunities. But first one must determine which educational path to pursue, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in nursing (ADN). Most will initially be educated at the associate degree level, even though the American Organization of Nursing Executives (AONE) has recommended a baccalaureate level as a minimal for entry-level nurses. With the expanding number of RN to BSN programs available there is always the option to further one’s education at a later date. The benefits for acquiring a BSN over an ADN include a better knowledge for evidence-based practice, an increased advantage for promotion, and the necessary gateway for higher education.
Taylor, D. (2008). Should the entry into nursing practice be the baccalaureate degree?. AORN Journal, 87(3), 611-620. doi: 10.1016/j.aorn.2007.07.006
Their faith in me allows me to push forward, and drive me to stay on track , so I can reach my goals. In addition, without my passion to want to help others none of my goals I want to achieve would be possible.
As I have stated before, I have had no singular experience that has led me to the career choice of nursing. I had a natural inclination towards the profession, and as I pursued this inclination, I grew more and more passionate about nursing. Each day, I wholeheartedly put my determination to be a nurse into everything I do. Nursing is more than a career choice to me; it is a privilege for me to share my compassion with human beings. Stony Brook University School of Nursing will allow me to receive the best education, allowing me to impact others in the most profound way possible.

Working with new graduate nurses has instilled in me the goal to share my knowledge and expertise with others and to teach others the art of nursing. My short-term goals are to complete the Master’s program by the summer of 2014. My second goal is to secure a job as a nurse educator at a hospital and work with my nurse manager to provide program like in-service to the hospital staff and students. I would like to incorporate my education from State University’s master’s program to assist hospital staff and patients in their learning process, with the use of new technology to facilitate the learning and understanding.
Nurses have both learning and teaching responsibilities. Continuing education for nurses is very important in order to maintain their knowledge and skills among the health care development. If it is true, that the ability of teaching is a complex process, one fundamental part of this process is the ability of the learner to receive information, process the information and carry out in practice. Learning, is a change in human ability or capability of willing to learn and act on the learning (Blais, Hayes, Kozier, & Erb, 2006); is a transformation of behaviors, existing knowledge, ability and values to change an area of need to become better as individual. When teaching how to use the EpiPen, the following components are applied and planned: detailed assessment of the learner, learner objectives, defined topic and outline for the learner, materials and teaching methods, teaching sessions with focus on an interpersonal process recording, and finally an evaluation of the teaching plan provided by return demonstration.
Nurses need a seat at the table to ensure they have a voice to influence and shape their future. Nursing is constantly evolving and changing, and employers continue to raise the bar for nursing. Nurses understand early in their career the importance of continuing education to enhance future career opportunities. Professional development relates to how nurses continue to broaden their knowledge, skills, and expertise throughout their career, therefore enhancing their professional practice. This advanced knowledge is not only career boosting, but also opens a seat at the table giving nurses the power to make decisions and effect changes. Professional development and continuing education are more important to nurses now than ever before to keep up with the rapid changes in healthcare today. Numminen, Leino-Kilpi, Isoaho and Meretoja’s (2017) article contends professional development enhances personal satisfaction, rejuvenates the love of nursing, builds confidence and credibility. There are many avenues to pursue
Introduction A teaching plan is one of the most important steps in the nursing process. It is a vital tool used to achieve the best quality of patient care. A nurse should teach the patient what they need to know about their disease or disorder, diet, treatment, medication regimens, and self-care (Taylor, LeMone, Lillis, & Lynn, 2008). In this paper, I will explain teaching plan for diabetes patient with regular insulin injection, including the purpose of plan, outcomes, behavioral objectives, and teaching method.
The BSN program helps the nurses in many ways including utilizing the process to the full scale and it will encourage nurses to use their skills like educating the patient as we’ll as creating new nurses. Because of the new health care reform, the BSN program will also aid in filling the gap from the influx of patients. The baccalaureate degrees and BSN program helps prepare students for the significant part they are going to play in reinforcing the new healthcare reform. At present, I utilize and develop nursing care plans in the nursing process, even though it needs some corrections due to the nature of my work. The highest standards of nursing can only be achieved through better research and advanced training.
