My mom, Cathy Battaglia is a kindergarten teacher at Suffern Central School District and I enjoyed learning about her class and responses when I talk with her. She enjoys first seeing her students struggle through problems and gain the answers they were looking for with the resources she supplies. In kindergarten, she feels you see the most growth and it is motivating to continue teaching. I feel she wants to be a part of making a difference and knowing children have reached their maximum potential under her guidance. She wants to create students who are innovative and problem solvers. At times, explicit instruction is important as well. It really depends on the learners in front of you. Children are curious, and they need time to explore and learn new things. Tasks should be constructed for students to be challenged and give them multiple learning opportunities. Curriculum needs to be differentiated and tiered for children to learn. Teachers need to always be leaners and seek out new research based strategies to help the students in front of them. They need to consistently assess students and take them from where they are to the next level. Teachers wear many different hats. They are not only teachers, they also need to teach and motivate the whole child. They play a critical role in a child’s development- academically as well as socially and emotionally. To be a successful teacher, I need to know my students. I need to dedicate my time- establish relationships, create a culture for learning, plan lessons with differentiated activities, assess student strengths and weaknesses, instruct students appropriately, manage a classroom effectively, attend professional development, and meet with parents to discuss progress. They should have intrinsic motivation to learn and need to believe that they can do it. Students need to take an active role in their own learning and participate in learning opportunities. They need to understand that are held accountable for their own success. Students should be advocates for themselves and at the same time be self-reflective. Students need to learn how to set goals for themselves and create steps to reach them. Being a student requires that many skills need to be developed whether it is communication, problem solving, collaboration, organization, and time management.
