Physical exercise is a kind of physical activities that is done with the attribute of structure and repetitive and purpose which means someone wants to change the physical characteristics through it (Caspersen, Powell and Christenson, 1985). Everyone has different purpose and different exercise brings different effect on specific individual (Dishman, Sallis and Orenstein, 1985).
People’s intension to do physical exercise
Different intension drives people to take part in physical exercise. According to a research (Lowery et al., 2005), it shown that most of women are not confident to their body image due to the definition of the idealized standard beauty on media or in public eyes; It also stated most of men are not satisfied to their muscle tone because of the pressure from culture. So this is one reason why people would like to do physical activity. Ratey, MD (2008), Ratey discuses how exercise can help treat many mood disorders and how it can help strengthen our brains. This book is divided into ten chapters all with five to ten subsections in them. The chapters include: Welcome to the revolution: A Case Study on Exercise and the brain, Learning, Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Attention Deficit, Addiction, Hormonal Changers, Aging, and the Regimen.
Pate et al. (1995) stated that physical activity is needed for health promotion and disease prevention. They also stated that every adult should do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise everyday if possible. Moderate intensity exercising includes activities such as brisk walking and cycling as stated by the Department of Health (2011). They also state that regular physical activity will improve a person’s mental health as it will increase self esteem and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Physical wellbeing is also enhanced by an increase in physical activity. The World Health Organisation (WHO) (2002) found that in developed countries 20% of heart disease and 10% of strokes are due to physical inactivity. Furthermore a lack of physical activity is found to cause 3% of all diseases.
Whether or not this "runner's high" physically exists is a topic of heated debate in the scientific community. Scientists have seen many instances in which exercise has benefited the mental health of people. For one thing, physical activity can greatly improve one's self-esteem. Studies conducted on both children and clinically depressed patients show marked improvement in self-esteem, following aerobic and anaerobic exercise training. (Biddle and Mutrie 1991) Exercise does this because it creates a situation in which the participant learns to master a task, thus achieving a feeling of control over their life. Thus, exercise helps to do undo depression, which according to the "learned helplessness" theory of depression, is caused by recurring instances in which patients have no sense of control over the outcome.
Some hypothesize that moderate levels of exercise will decrease the symptoms of mental health conditions (Blumenthal et al., 2007; Diaz & Motta, 2008; Motta, Kuligowski, & Marino, 2010; Rosenbaum, Nguyen, Lenehan, Tiedemann, van der Ploeg, & Sherrington, 2011) and therefore be used as an alternative or complimentary treatment option for mental health (Libby, Pilver, & Desai, 2012).
Mariam-Webster dictionary defines exercise as a physical activity that is done in order to become stronger and healthier. Adolescence is a transitional stage of physical and psychological human development that generally occurs during the period from puberty to adulthood. For the most part, through all of the people interviewed, they believed that one of the largest constraints on how much physical activity they were able to participate in was a lack of time. Culture was found also to not really affect someone's physical activities as much as some thought age, as well as just the people around them affected what activities they participated in. a difference that was found throughout the interview is that the younger participants were more interested in team based activities and major sports in general. Rather than the second participant, who was more interested in a more training and personal building based activity. Each person, when asked did have another activity in mind that they would be inclined to participate in, and they were mostly large group sports that the people were mostly inclined to do. All participants also felt that cardio is one of the more important activities to do and participate in things relating to it. Based on gender, there were not really any differences except for the fact that the two females expressed the fact they felt challenged when exercising, versus the male who did not feel like they were particularly challenged by anything.The survey ended up showing that each individual did have similar beliefs in what's important and what's a restraint when exercising; However here was not a conclusive
