How Healthy Am I? My Physical Health: Physical health is an essential part of overall health. Physical health makes an individual mechanically fit to carry out his/her daily activities without problem. It is when you have good metabolism, healthy organs and free from illness, injury or pain. This is an important area of health because regular physical activity keeps your body functioning properly. If you perform sufficient physical activity, you can manage your body weight better, reduce your risk of heart attacks, diabetes, some cancers, high blood pressure, have stronger bones, joint and muscles while feeling energetic, happy, relaxed and sleep better. The positive aspects of my physical health are a healthy immune system, sufficient physical exercise, healthy diet and performing forms of relaxation and stress relief every day. I have a healthy diet thanks to my pedantic mother. I am very hygienic; this protects me against illnesses and unwanted infections. The negative aspect of my physical health is my sleeping patterns. 8 hours of sleep for me is not consistent, especially when I have many school assessments and tutoring lessons outside of school. Managing school assessments, piano tutorials and theory, sport, tutoring and outside of school activities can be quite stressful. Ways I can improve my Physical health: The only reason I sleep late is because of my homework and tutoring lessons. I have some solutions I’ve applied during this year. I have stopped activities such as art class, talked to my tutoring and piano teachers about my school work, don’t procrastinate, give myself hope and informing my parents about my busy schedule. My Social Health: Social Health is your interactions with other people, how other people ... ... middle of paper ... ...fe and help us live with positive and ethical thoughts. The positive aspects of my Spiritual health are looking forward to what life offers now and in the future and believing that everyone has something to offer in life. I believe that because I think everyone is important and has their rights. The negative aspects of my Spiritual health are believing my life is worthwhile and feeling that I have my place in the world is because sometimes we feel depressed after difficult things occur. Sometimes people are annoying or don’t treat you properly and I feel that not all people and living things have an important place on this earth. Ways I can improve my Spiritual health are thinking positive thoughts, smiling more often, look forward to the light at t he end of the tunnel, recalling happy memories, treating everyone fairly and trying my best to be a positive person.
Health is described as “the general condition of the body or mind, especially in terms of the presence or absence of illness or impairments.” Health can also be defined as “the overall condition of something in terms of soundness, vitality and proper functioning” (Oxford, 263). From the definitions of health given, one can either be in good health or in unhealthy.
In this essay I am going to investigate whether health is easily defined as the absence of disease or physical injury. According to Health psychology (2009) ‘World Health Organisation defined health as a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. In order to achieve good physical a nutrition diet is needed, healthy BMI, rest and adequate physical exercise is needed.
The definition of health generally varies from person to person; for me health is the state of well-being; whether it is physical, mental or social well-being. When making health decisions many people, myself included, consider finances before making decisions. For an example before joining a gym I consider the cost and quality of the gym before considering how vital exercise is to my health. The same goes for diet I often hear people say eating health is much more expensive than eating unhealthy. Being healthy comes from putting in effort; physically, mentally, and economically.
As defined in the World Health Organization’s constitution (2006), health is the state of absolute well-being in the physical, mental, and social aspects and not merely the absence of disease or frailty. The definition of health adapted by most scholars encompasses all the dimensions of a person’s well-being, not only focusing on physical health. It also emphasizes that health does not equate to not having any sickness.
My spiritual wellness is what I believe in life. I believe in my religion which is Christianity and its beliefs. I keep myself motivated through faith by the morals and beliefs throughout the day. Spiritual wellness is your purpose in life and that is an important part that has to do with your
The negative is where health is perceived to be the absence of disease or abnormalities in the body. This is similar to the positive is where health focuses on the presence of certain attributes, rather than the absence of them. This is different from the world health organisation (WHO 2008) where health requires a person to be completely physically, mentally and socially well, but not just the absence of disease and illness. This also requires the person to be socially and economically productive in order to be seen as healthy. According to Mildred Blaxter (1990), there are different ways of defining health. Furthermore, disease can be seen as the presence of an abnormality in part of the body or where there is a harmful physical change in the body such as broken bones. So, illness is the physical state of disease that is to say, the symptoms that a person feels because of the disease. However, there is some limitation of these definitions which is not merely an absence of disease but a state of physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing. (Haralambos and Holbon 2009 p: 50).
Positive health looks at what aspects of health are there and which ones make us healthy.
In society today, there is an extensive range of definitions of health and wellbeing which can be seen as both positive and negative. A Holistic view can also be identified and defined. These definitions of health have changed over time and will carry on changing within the future. According to where a family lives or their social class everyone will have different meanings and views of health and wellbeing. This may be due to what one person perceives as being healthy as another person may not. Channel 4 learning (no date) describes that a positive view of health can be seen as when a person is more likely to achieve and sustain physical fitness from exercising and are mentally stable. Therefor a negative view can be described when a person is free from illness, disease, mental distress or anything which may be a symptom of not having good health. The holistic view of health sees the person as a whole instead of just directing at one area and therefore combines physical, social, intellectual and emotional factors together. Consequently, if a person has emotional difficulties such as how they interact with other people or how they may feel but are physically fit and free from illness does not mean that they are healthy overall as one factor has difficulties. It is also vital to consider the two main theoretical concepts known as the medical and social model of health. Polity books (no date) describes that the medical model views health in terms of disease, diagnosis and then treatment and very much views a body to be separate from psychological processes. Causes of ill-health within the body are seen to require expert interference from a doctor to provide treatment to prevent or kill of an illness within the body. The Social model...
The first of the six dimensions is physical wellness, which is your body’s overall wellness. This includes the absence of illness and disease and your body’s fitness level. You have to make good, healthy choices to be physically well. Eating healthy, exercising, and seeing a doctor on a regular basis for check-ups are all conducive to physical wellness. Some good examples of people who have achieved physical wellness are; Lance Armstrong and the Venus and Serena Williams.
If all of these important activities occur during sleep, why is it that people are so willing to short themselves of this vital activity? Although much about sleep still remains a mystery, research and experiments continue to show how important sleep is to each and every person. Throughout this paper, I will discuss sleep and the effects that it has on performance and health, especially among college students. A college student’s sleeping pattern is a reliable indicator of their level of performance in the classroom and other school-affiliated activities, as a lack of sleep leads to decreased performance. Sleep is directly related to the level of performance and health of an individual; the more rested a person is, the better that person will perform and feel (Dryer, 2006).
It is well known that college students do not sleep enough. But what makes students not sleep? Is it the pressure of the student’s parents to do well in school or the feeling of needing to be at every social event or maybe both? This is obviously different for every student, but the majority don’t sleep because they are studying. The students will force themselves to go against their biological sleep clock so they can get another assignment done. “We sleep less because we want to or must work more, study, socialize, or engage in other activities that take precedence over healthy sleep.”(Imaging Sleep and Sleep Disorders) College students prioritize school before sleep, because of the high amounts of homework required for them to do, but sadly this has a horrible effect on the student’s physical health and the health of their grade.
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
Knowing what each of these dimensions of wellness requires can feel overwhelming. However, one should not be discouraged because of what they lack, but look forward to the improvement we are capable of bringing to our own lives. Becoming more spiritual will always be beneficial. Anytime one can improve their relationship with God one can improve their life astronomically. Emotional wellness is possible even for those who have been through horrible experiences. Practicing emotional wellness can bring healing. Physical and nutritional wellness will lead to a longer, pleasanter life and social wellness will make that life worth living. Sharing a well life with family, friends, and God will make time on this earth an irreplaceable experience.
Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. There are many factors that influence your health, but three major components contribute to general well-being: Self-awareness, a balanced diet and, regular physical activity.
According to our text book, health is “by simplest definition, being sound in body, mind, and spirit” (Hales, 2003). It is impossible to improve your body and mind without the spirit coming along too. I feel as though I am spiritualty fit, I have purpose and I live in a state of gratitude and optimism as much as possible but I am excited to see how much better it can be once I reach my goals.
