Coming from a family with no college education, a college degree has always been a lifetime goal and dream of mine. My mom and dad have worked in furniture factories since their graduation from high school, and I have seen their personal struggles, and it has only pushed me harder to want to attend college. My parents have always worked hard to bless me with all they could, but paying for college is out of their control, therefore I am heavily relying on scholarships. Receiving the Phil Jones Memorial Scholarship would mean everything to me and would be a tremendous help for me while at ICC and UMMC. If I could win this scholarship, it would help me achieve the goal of staying away from student loans and debt. Going into college, my plans
are to attend ICC in the fall to major in dental hygiene and minor in business marketing. After two years at ICC, I plan to transfer to UMMC to obtain my bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. After earning my degree, I intend to work as a hygienist and later open my own business in my hometown of Pontotoc. This scholarship would make reaching my goals and dreams a lot closer to being realistic. Growing up my family hit some hard times where we struggled. I not only want to reach my goals for myself, but I also want to do this for my family. I truly believe I could benefit greatly from this scholarship and hope you, the committee, gives me the opportunity to do so!
Richard Rodriguez author and journalist wrote a short piece “Scholarship Boy” to explain to his audience of underprivileged children wanting a better future, the scarifies he endured as a young child: the loss of family ties and knowing himself in order to succeed a better self. Another great author who faced huge sacrifices is known as none other than abolitionist leader Fredrick Douglass, “Learning to Read and Write” giving his found audience a look into the various dangerous tasks he took to give himself a better chance of survival. The two pieces show how one boy sacrificed so much in order to free himself and the other coming from less harsh circumstances but understand sacrifices just as well. All to be able to have a better and brighter future.
William C. Friday, former President of the University of North Carolina system and a dedicated educator, said of Roy H. Park ‘31, distinguished NC State graduate and namesake of the Park Scholarships: "Always of good humor and with a generous heart, he… [shared] of himself gladly in the service of others." How and why have you shared of yourself in the service of others?
In the beginning of my senior year I was eager to expand my understanding of how it would be to work in a hospital. An opportunity arose allowing me to volunteer in the hospital at the University of Chicago. I was able to volunteer at the children's playroom, which consisted of a weekly commitment. The daily tasks I had to perform where to enlighten the spirits of children and reduce the amount of anxiety that developed within them when they approached a hospital visit. I would play games, read books, or just company the patients at their bedside. I especially love to interact with the younger patients because their laughter and innocence warms my heart up.
Unfortunately, my family and I fall into an area of the middle class that prohibits us from receiving need-based aid. Although I have graciously been awarded the Elizabeth Ann Seton Scholarship, without some additional form of aid, a Seton Hill education may be prohibitively expensive. My fourth year’s tuition alone would cost $37,520 with my current scholarship, and I would still have to pay for living expenses. Once my undergraduate and fifth years’ expenses are included, I will be over $150,000 in debt when I graduate. As a student who has worked exceedingly hard in the classroom and as a leader for four years, this amount of financial burden feels like a punishment. If I do not receive the Seton Scholar Award, I am not confident that I can attend Seton Hill and make the impacts I have described in this
The National Junior Honor Society is a very respected and prestigious organization that I would be glad to be a part of. The students involved exemplify scholarship, leadership, service, character, and knowledge. All of which are traits that are incredibly important in my own life. I feel that each student with the privilege to commit to this foundation should devote some time and effort to those qualities.
Albert C. Barnes was a strong willed and confident philosopher, who was ahead of his time both culturally and intellectually. He spent most of his life collecting pieces of art from famous artists such as Picasso, Van Gough, and Matisse. He then proceeded to carefully orient the paintings, coming from different parts of the world, to perfectly complement each other and make a statement that every human is equal. Furthermore, each piece was unique and alluring, causing the collection to be worth more than $25 million. Many strongly desired to obtain these paintings, but because of his strong will, Barnes declared to make his exhibit used primarily for educational purposes. His will was for the collection not to be moved, loaned, sold, or used for commercial exploitation. Despite his hard work to make this clear to his adversaries, his will was lost in a world of a hundred power-hungry men.
I know that through my hard work and dedication I can make my goals a reality. However, it may not be possible without these Scholarships. While my parents will help me in any way they can, I am hoping that my hard work and dedication to my studies pays off. I am a very self-driven individual who will accomplish any goal I set my mind on achieving. I am also aware of how without scholarships I may face a financial setback. I am hoping that through the help of scholarships I will be able to achieve all my goals in a timely
Triple impact competitors are athletes who work hard to improve the teammate's performance, lead their team to success, and make the game better. I think I meet the minimum standards of joining the Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship since I have been performing well in my classes and more importantly leading my teammates in my discussion group in the right direction. In addition, I have been working so hard to grow as a person both physically and mentally since I joined my school team. However, I made sure that I balance between my academics and athletic life because I believe both are equally important to guarantee the successful experience. I meet the standard of making myself better since I am ready to participate in games any time, as
Richard Rodriguez’s The Achievement of Desire puts a very unusual point of view on how to look at the education system and how it affects the everyday person. Rodriguez talks immensely about the term he uses called “The Scholarship Boy.” He claims that the scholarship boy is technically defined as a student who is extremely talented but is changed by the school environment. This means that they (the students) can be extremely cultured at home but as soon as they start learning about other cultures through the education process, they change remarkably. Doing this can cause a lot of things to go right or wrong in the ones culture back home. It can cause problems between the kids and parents, siblings and siblings or even the parents at each
I need this scholarship to achieve my goals and most importantly to make my family proud. My family did not get this chance that you are giving me so I am not just doing this for me, I am also doing this for them. I already have all the support from all of my family and all of my friends, but that alone is not enough to conquer my dreams, and to prove all the people that have doubted me that they were wrong. I hope that this organization can help me reach my goals, and to most importantly make them become a reality. I want to look back onto my life and know that this scholarship, and college helped me to be the man I will be. I hope you accept me into your college and most importantly giving me this
I deserve to win the $1,000 Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship because I will change lives with its help. I plan to become an early childhood educator and will continue with school until I become just that. I believe that with the help of this scholarship, I will help many children reach goals that are just as significant as my own. Also, I will be able to set an example for children who may have not come from financially stable homes, and show that anything is possible if you put forth the effort. My parents are divorced and I have been evicted from 2 homes in the past three years; however that has not stopped me from getting my high school diploma and setting further goals for myself.
I have received over $90,000 in scholarships from the Miss America organization, which will allow me to graduate from college debt-free and work toward a master’s degree in the
When I found out that I was a recipient of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Scholarship, I was overjoyed to have an award that is directly related to an important part of my life. Without this scholarship, I do not believe I would have been able to attend Ohio University. My mother had been concerned about the cost of college, but receiving this honor helped her become more at ease with the idea of me going to a public university and not starting school at the local community college. I have now been in college for almost two months, and feel incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to pursue an education at my dream university. However, I am re-applying to this scholarship in the hopes of continuing to earn financial assistance from
An opportunity for this immense amount is not given every day. I am the first generation to ever go to college and to be born in the United States. I would love to receive this opportunity and make my family proud. I have been academically and personally challenged throughout my high school career. I consider this opening of academic accomplishment to myself and my community. If I receive the POSSE Foundation scholarship is a way for me to thank my parents for all the sacrifices they have made for me and my brothers. I want to show them that when they came to the United States was not a lost cause and have succeeded their goal for their children to receive advanced education. My culture values collegiate learning preciously and immensely. I
A global citizen is that who is willing to use its voice and knowledge to make a change. No one would ever be able to make a change in just one day, it is something that takes time and devotion. I’m really interested in diversity and I’m seeking to what is my role is as a world citizen. The fact that I’m searching for an international education is the proof of my desire to establish myself as a global citizen and my interest in the world issues.
