William C. Friday, former President of the University of North Carolina system and a dedicated educator, said of Roy H. Park ‘31, distinguished NC State graduate and namesake of the Park Scholarships: "Always of good humor and with a generous heart, he… [shared] of himself gladly in the service of others." How and why have you shared of yourself in the service of others? Explain how you are preparing yourself for a lifetime of doing so. Last year on my way to ballet in Midtown, Atlanta, I noticed women gathering along nearby side roads and abandoned shopping centers. They were bundled up in tents, cars, cardboard boxes, and some were even seeking warmth from an overgrown patch of bamboo. Initially, my dance studio collected donations for them, …show more content…
While giving out supplies does not fix the homeless problem, it is the beginning to a solution. By building relationships with these women and learning about the homeless situation in Atlanta, I am preparing myself to identify real problems. I believe, in order to peruse a career in engineering, it starts with an understanding of my environment. One action I am taking towards this pathway of service is applying my academic knowledge. For instance, most of us forget to realize the privilege of sleeping. For most of these homeless women, their “bed” consists of cardboard and for some urine soaked cardboard. Unfortunately, these variables alter their sleeping patterns and quality because of their circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are the body’s internal clock that is responsible for a person’s sleeping patterns. When a person’s circadian rhythm is disrupted it can cause grogginess and an untimely melatonin release. Homeless people do not have the access to a private room to sleep in; instead, they are subject to sound and light pollution throughout the night. I believe when considering why homeless are not perusing a job, it is important to consider that some their lack of motivation is caused from poor sleeping. Eventually, I would like to study how to improve quality of sleep for those living on the street because it is a short-term
Most individuals would suggest creating a homeless shelter, but that solution is unrealistic due to budgets, and the lack of funds from the community and Calvary Chapel. The cost of these solutions is reasonable and within reach. The solution will provide jobs and offer a sense of self-esteem most homeless have lost. The homeless as well as the community will thrive from this program and lives will be changed. Individuals, who were stuck on the street cold and alone, will be given the opportunity to go out and make a change in their lives. Although, many might suggest that many homeless are ex drug addicts or alcoholics, there are many who do not have the financial stability to survive and live a life of normality but will do what it takes to change their situation. Hess suggests that, “What many people need is an opportunity to get back on their feet and develop their own income” (Feuer, 2012, para.15). My solution offers this opportunity and by implementing it, homeless will have the power to change their
The subject of the final paper will be concentrating on the homeless people in America, and how we, as American citizens can become a voice and reduce the number of people living in the streets, cars, or wherever they can find shelter for the night. This journal will look at the subject and the path I will need follow to accomplish the task.
When people see the homeless, they are quick to assume whether the homeless are where they’re at because of drugs, or not being in a stable environment. However, homeless people rarely receive an opportunity to tell their life stories or even have the chance to explain how they ended up in the situations they are in. Homelessness in Boston has persisted and increased for decades. Though there have been efforts to combating the issues of homelessness and housing, it appears that there is no solution in sight. Winter have become nightmares for most of the homeless population in Boston. Weather ranges from thirty degrees down to ten, sometimes single numbers. Weather that is below freezing are moments where people like myself, need to be in warm places. Kourtney McLean is a woman financially and emotionally not stable enough to take care of herself. Ms. McLean has been living on the streets for almost all her life --homeless and struggling to get on her
Now that the causes of homelessness have been identified, a solution can be formed. The best solution would be to create a transformational campus by offering a p...
Homelessness in the United States has been an important subject that the government needs to turn its attention to. There has been announced in the news that the number of the homeless people in many major cities in the United States has been increasing enormously. According to United States Interagency Council on Homelessness reported that there was an estimation of 83,170 individuals have experienced chronic homelessness on the streets of the United States’ streets and shelters on only a single night of January 2015, which is a small decrease of only 1% from the previous year (People Experiencing Chronic Homelessness, n.d.). The United States must consider this subject that most of the people underestimate it and not pay attention
As a result, homelessness can be decrease by educating the public about the problem, help the homeless by teaching them financial management skill and build more houses that is affordable, as homeless are human just like us. We should help them to make sure that they can overcome these obstacles and be able to make changes in their life by walking away from

The main issue revolving homelessness is that people are not putting themselves into their perspective. Students who live in shelters and constantly worry about the possibility of eating that day go through a whole different kind of struggle compared to others. This kind of obstacle is not common to relate to. “She slept in libraries, bathrooms and her car. She sold plasma and skipped meals,” (2). Majority of students who enter college have the luxury of receiving secure shelter and food, in which they should. Ms. Evans is an example of

Countless throughout the streets of Jackson, MS there are homeless people asking for food, money, etc. and some people aid them and others walk away. However, does anyone ever see the other side of the equation? Driving down Gallatin St. one night I saw firsthand the “other side”. Because of this, the issue that my research will cover is homelessness. Homelessness is defined as a state in which individuals lack a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence. Poverty, lack of affordable housing, declining wages, lost jobs, the economy, foreclosure, decreased assistance programs, domestic violence, substance abuse, mental illness, single parenthood, etc. are some of the causes of homelessness in America. Some of the proposed solutions are: affordable housing and homeless prevention programs. However, there needs to be less energy focused on providing temporary housing for those who are homeless, and more focus on providing permanent, affordable housing. Homelessness is an issue that should concern all of us. With a decrease in this situation it would clear up the amount of people walking around on the streets and everyone would feel more comfortable traveling at night. If someone is homeless, it is a common belief that they are more inclined to criminal activity; therefore less homelessness could equal less crime. Homelessness is not discriminatory and can happen to anyone at any time.
Studies have shown that, due to the sheer stress and anxiety of being homeless, 30% of the population increase their use of drugs and alcohol. Many homeless people are employed either fulltime or part-time. According to the US Conference of Mayors2008 report, approximately 2% of the homeless population is employed for a period longer than 30 days. Most homeless people are men. The number of homeless families, single women, and unaccompanied youth continue to be a large growing group. Men currently make up 43% of the homeless population. (US Con. Of Mayors 2005). Homelessness is an issue that has become prominent within the last century because of government handouts and assistance programs. The homeless are more likely to be the victims rather than the perpetrators of crime. They are less like to commit crimes against persons or property. Crimes associated with the homeless population are non-violent and non-destructive crimes. At least one homeless person is murdered each month due to hate crimes.. Many of the homeless don’t even report crimes committed against them. Creating more shelters and programs for e homeless will only enable them to stay in their situation. The goal of projects and programs all over the
When government teacher Brett Boatman challenged his students to take on a cause and “make a difference”, LeighAnn was inspired. She decided her cause would be to help the homeless who endure drastic temperatures regularly and wonder what they’re going to be eating the next day. If they’re going to be safe.
Atlanta has a large homeless population that do not have materials to keep them warm. This is a huge problem, especially at night because of high winds and freezing temperatures. Furthermore, I want to have a blanket drive; however, I do not want to give the collection to an organization. I plan to place large bins with a sign that reads “For Those in Need of Warmth” around the city of Atlanta. Although organizations have held blanket drives before, they usually donate items and fail to return after that. This is an issue because homeless people do not have access to laundry services on a regular basis, so when blankets get filthy and soggy, they will not be able to properly clean them. Using dirty items causes painful skin infections. Think about it. If dirt gets into their cuts, they do not have resources to clean it immediately. Due to their lack of sanitation equipment, there will be two sides of each bin: a donation side and a return side. As previously mentioned, wet materials make it more likely for the homeless to get sick and to suffer from painful blisters on their skin; therefore, they will be able to return dirty blankets and receive clean ones in return. Homeless individuals will not be limited to the number of blankets they take because this is a matter of life or
This great nation of awesome power and abundant resources is losing the battle against homelessness. The casualties can be seen on the street corners of every city in American holding an ?I will work for food? sign. Homeless shelters and rescue missions are at full capacity. There is no room at the inn for the nation?s indigent. Anyone who has studied this issue understands that homelessness is a complex problem. Communities continue to struggle with this socio-economic problem while attempting to understand its causes and implement solutions. The public and private sectors of this country are making a difference in the lives of the homeless by addressing the issues of housing, poverty and education.
I also had the privilege of helping with the Meals on Wheels non profit organization. My grandfather used to be a Meals on Wheels recipient and he would share with me how he enjoyed looking forward to their company and a hot meal daily. I volunteered because I wanted to give back and help someone else’s loved one in the same way. It was very rewarding delivering hot meals to people who didn’t have the means of getting one as well as being there for them to talk to. Overall, it was a very humbling experience, it made me realize just how blessed I am and how much I take for granted daily.
