Growing up in the Rio Grande Valley you become aware of all the opportunities that the world has to offer in contrast to the ones occurring here. You hear about all that is going on in such places as New York and California, but it is a novelty to hear anything or anyone being discussed from the Rio Grande Valley, unless it relates to Mexico. Ever since I was a child I had big ambitions, wishing for nothing more than to become successful in this world. As I matured I also developed a more direct goal. A goal that will not only further enhance the Valley but also enhance the people contained within it. My goal is to one day return and influence the teens of future generations. Helping them become aware of the infinite possibilities that are …show more content…
spread across our great nation and attempt to help them realize that there is more to life than what they have experienced. The Valley has much to offer in terms of culture and traditions. Traditions that have helped to shape our way of life. However, that does not mean that the Valley is the world. Many students have never experienced life outside of their hometowns. Many students have never left the state, making the Valley there one and only world. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, all children should be presented with the idea of opportunity and all it has to offer. They should also be pushed to strive for goals with no boundaries and at the very least attempt to achieve their own lifelong goals. So what can be done to turn these goals into a reality?
The answer can be found in the academic and extracurricular activities I have participated in. Since joining high school I have participated in a number of activities including band, STEMS Club, Culinary Club, National Honors Society, and Future Business Leaders of America to name a few. Having taken part in such a variety of organizations has allowed me to embrace the diversity of the population. Since no two of the above organizations are the same, they have helped me communicate with a number of diverse students at my high school. Learning how the different social groups felt and acted forced me to adjust to each of them and really understand the truth that everyone is …show more content…
different. As I look forward to all that Texas A&M College Station has to offer I Know that it would be a tough endeavor without the presence of scholarships.
I know that through my hard work and dedication I can make my goals a reality. However, it may not be possible without these Scholarships. While my parents will help me in any way they can, I am hoping that my hard work and dedication to my studies pays off. I am a very self-driven individual who will accomplish any goal I set my mind on achieving. I am also aware of how without scholarships I may face a financial setback. I am hoping that through the help of scholarships I will be able to achieve all my goals in a timely
manner. My goal is to further educate and grow the Rio Grande Valley, my place of birth. I feel that by bringing different and diverse experiences to the Valley will allow it to prosper. Merging the two would allow them to further compete with people from across the country. Enhancing teens such as myself with windows of possibilities would provide them with more opportunities for advancement.
Every individual in society and in a community is unique in their own ways, and their diversity shows up in many ways. Some of these ways include: religion, race, socioeconomic status, lifestyle, and so on. Everyone’s backgrounds are different, and this is what creates diversity in people. Even though everyone might not be the same, only by uniting everyone can we create the big picture. It’s like a puzzle—even though people are different, we can come together to create a big picture that couldn’t be created by puzzle pieces of the same shape. To me, diversity symbolizes the unique backgrounds that we come from. Every individual in their communities and in their society are influenced by their background—and this can come from various reasons. If someone comes from a different socioeconomic background, or lifestyle, their thought processes and their view of life might be much more different than mine. Their reaction to a certain situation can be much more different than mine, and it is important for me to see all these viewpoints in order to be a more informed member of my community. Everyone is diverse in their expression, style, and
When someone say’s “hispanic,” what definition comes to mind? Hispanics are not one nationality, nor one culture. Instead, Hispanics are greatly diverse people. Our language and cultural origins are Spanish and Latin American, regardless of race and color. Hispanics can be European, Indian, or of African descent, or any combination of the three. The culture could be linked to Mexico, the Caribbean countries, Central America, South America and Spain. Hispanics were once considered a rarity in the United States, now we are found throughout the country.
Upon the completion of my high school career I was faced with the sudden realization that I was growing up and on the verge of becoming independent. A few months prior, I had applied to Montana State and received my acceptance letter. The future was before me and my ambitions were truly limitless. That is, until the fact set in that I was going to have to pay for this education that I desired. I knew that with my busy schedule, I would be unable to make enough money while only working a few hours here and there. I was beginning to lose sight of hope. Then one day I talked to my counsellor about what I could do and he pointed me towards dozens of scholarships that I could apply for. The exigence or purpose
I grew up in Hemet, California in a neighborhood filled with friends that I grew up with. I remembered a lot about my home that I grew up in mostly because I remember details better than most people. I may remember details, but I love looking back on memories I had with my family and friends.
Showing support for everyone, since everyone comes from different walks of life, the importance of diversity should be valued as much as possible because it benefits everyone, whether it's race, sexuality or religion, it lets people learn from each other. Knowledge and self awareness is key to creating a strong diverse environment, without being able to learn how to look at things in a new perspective your personal grow is limited. Everyone has the potential to grow and learn, to not is a disservice to yourself as a human being.
When people hear the word 'diversity', they often think in terms of black and white. I believe the true meaning of diversity is not simply about skin color, economic background or the face value of any other characteristic, rather it is the increased knowledge and sensitivity gained from unique experiences. The strength of diversity then comes from having many points of view and trying to reconcile them by finding common truths or resolving differences amongst people. Being a person of mixed heritage, my father is black and my mother is white, has definitely affected my life and contributed to the development of qualities that enhance my ability to embrace the uniqueness of those around me. Being raised in a single parent household and the values passed on to me by my mother have also been strong influences in my life. My greatest contribution to my community is the ability to create relationships between people of diverse backgrounds and a desire to understand others' beliefs.
Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substance are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing. Diversity and inclusion should also apply to humans by bringing people together who are different it can creates a whole that is enhanced by the uniqueness of each individual.
According to the article called “ Developing Diversity Consciousness” , it stated that it is important to improve diversity consciousness because it enhance your diversity skills ( such as teamwork, ability to balance to fit in a group, and respect others), it expands your horizons and empowers you( it assist with building relationship by using social media), and it also promotes personal growth and strengthens your social network.
I attend a Title I school in West End Atlanta, and every day I see teenagers in my community who has given their lives away and have very little support to encourage them to be successful. As a result of this, I began researching and studying the outstanding things that I can do with my life outside of my community, such as going to college, and traveling. I got a lot of good feedback from my teachers, parents, and peers about this scholarship and I decided that I must find a way to pay for college because my family can not afford to pay for school. Being in the top ten percent of my class, a dual enrolled student, and an athlete, I serve as inspiration to others. If I attend college, then people from my school will feel as if they can attend
This understanding has motivated me to surround myself with those who are not like me, believing that we can all learn something from each other. That being said, this motivation is part of why I joined the Lookout Scholars Program at UNC, which is essentially a support program for first-generation students. As first-generation students, this group is very diverse, with students from many different backgrounds and with many different identities. As a Lookout Scholar, I have become good friends with a Polish girl, have studied alongside students with beliefs different than mine, and have enjoyed being classmates with students of different races. I believe being surrounded by this type of diversity has not only enriched my education as I have been a member of this diverse group, but has also strengthened my belief that while we are all diverse, we are unified by our humanity, evident by how many of us share similar interests and
I learned that life is going to throw you challenges and will attempt to set us back from our goals. Anybody can achieve any goal they set their minds to with hard work and determination. With my learning disability, I worked harder than those who were not limited in their strengths, but this turned out to be my ultimate strength. Working hard will only help you achieve in life. I view effort and trying as keys to success. I am a student diagnosed with a learning disability associated with my written expression, writing to your foundation because I never let a setback stop me from achieving my goals. I believe that I have an extraordinary message for others. I feel if I were the recipient for your scholarship it would definitely push me significantly closer to my goals coming from a son of a hard working single mother that I wish to give back what she has given
I should tell you why I was looking forward to diversity. As an Iranian-American who grew up in a primarily Caucasian district, I learned to value my culture and who I am. It's not that I was at all uncomfortable at my high school--on the contrary, I had a fantastic time and made friends I love like family. It was obvious, though, that the kids at my high school were in their own bubble. Every day my peers were surrounded by people more or less exactly like them. They weren't exposed to any way of life other than what they were experiencing. No one cared to learn about other cultures or peoples from other walks of life because they thought these people simply didn't affect them. Because of this homogenous bubble, news from the "outside world" rarely penetrated my peers' lives. The desire to reach out to something beyond themselves was absent from their minds.
Once of the greatest satisfactions that I have found with my personal andonofessional experience is being able to serve a diverse population. My entire life, I have surrounded myself in diversity. Whether it was in the church, friends, work or my opportunity to travel internationally. By surrounding myself with diversity, I have been able to grow and learn various life sessions. Diversity is not represented in just ethnicity. Diversity comes in various individuals and communities. I have been able to be surrounded by various individuals and communities of the following: ethnicities, people with different upbringing than mine, socioeconomic class, gender, professional status, educational status, regions, physical and mental abilities.
I’ve strived mightily for a lot of things in my life, such as a spot on a varsity team, Valedictorian, or a UIL district championship, but recently I've never have worked mentally as hard as I've had to this year in my pursuit of scholarships. My goal right now is to earn enough scholarships so that I don't have to pay a dime for my post secondary education (this includes my Bachelor's and Master’s degrees and perhaps even a Doctorate). Now I understand that you may be reading this and feel that getting a few scholarships here and there isn't really the big life changing movement that you might have been looking forward to reading about today, but I need you to understand that I'm the type of person that thinks big picture and long term. For most of my peers, having a
The world as a whole is becoming more diverse. There is diversity in schools and in the workplace. People should understand that diversity is what makes the world go around. If all people had the same characteristics then the world would be a very boring place. Even though all human beings are the same in some ways, we are still culturally different. Cultural diversity lets us appreciate our differences. Different cultural groups have varying beliefs, customs, values, and a wide variety of characteristics that make them special. Cultural influences make people see the world differently and cultural diversity should be appreciated.
