Preschool is an early childhood program which children from 3-5 years old attend. “Most children attend some sort of center-based program prior to kindergarten” says (Amy Flynn, director of New York City’s Bank Street Family Center). Studies have shown that in 2001, fifty-two percent of three and four-year old enrolled into a preschool program. The enrollment rate for four-year-old was the exact same as the enrollment rate as five-year old's in 1970. This was a good outcome because parents were starting to realize how important preschool education is. “At preschool, they become exposed to numbers, letters, and shapes. And more important they learn how to socialize and get along with other children” (Kathleen McCartney, PhD dean of Harvard Graduate School). The reason for preschool education gives children an opportunity for growth, prepares children for kindergarten, promotes social and emotional development, and boosting math and literacy skills.

Promoting a child's social and emotional development, means allowing a child to build trusting relationships with teachers and other students. Young children learn social skills and emotional self-control. A child developing social skills and self-control allows them to know how to deal with their frustrations, resolve conflicts with other children without being shamed but encouraging them to notice their own actions. Children crave for consistency in their homes and in schools. This allows teachers to build personal relationships with each child in the class. Parents play a big role because they can help the teacher better understand their child's personality
