Have you ever got home after school and just wanted to relax? But then you remember that you have tons and tons of homework. You complete everything but you still have to print something out, but you don't have a working printer. You go into school the next day and you tell your teacher. The teacher looks at you with a menacing eye and calls it an excuse for not doing it. This is what happens to students all the time. As soon as a teacher sees a blank homework sheet, they automatically think you just chose not to do it. Therefore homework should be banned. Kids don't always have the time to complete the homework that was assigned. In fact, according to author Tami Ansary said that since 1981, the amount of homework given to 6th graders has …show more content…
been increased by 50%. That means more stress for 6 graders. However homework causes more problems, than it helps students. As a result, homework is an unreliable tool to test a student's knowledge on the subject, can cause health problems, and not all students have the materials to do their homework. One reason why homework should be banned is because it can be an unreliable tool to test the student's knowledge on the subject. Kids try to rush through their homework for they could relax. In fact, according to Trenton International, if students do their homework the wrong way it can create bad learning habits. Some of these habits are copying off a friend's work, guessing answers, rushing through it, doing it the wrong way, and not doing it in general. This tells the teacher the wrong information about you knowing, or not understanding the topic. For example, you copy off a friend's work who has all the right answers. You don't understand the topic. The next day your teacher checks your homework and sees the you have the right answers. The teacher would most likely give you more challenging work considering that you had the right answers. But, some people would argue and say the teacher would find something suspicious in the student's work. Obviously, teachers would know who copied off who because of how well they understood the topic the day before. However, not all teachers collect the student's homework. In fact, most of the time they walk around and see if it is done. If that's the case, how are the students going to know if they have the right answers. Also, the homework, teachers give out are also your notes to study for tests and quizzes. If they are not showing them the answers the next day how are they supposed to know if the answers are right or wrong, and if they are wrong they are studying the wrong information. If teachers stopped handing out homework, these students wouldn't have such bad learning habits. Another reason why homework should be forbidden is because it causes health problems. People wonder why kids are not getting the eight or more hours of sleep and why they are up so late. Kids are only getting seven, six and even five hours each night. One of the main causes of this is homework. Kids are up hours and hours each night just completing homework, and when they go to school the next day teachers complain about why their kids are so tired during school. This is not healthy for kids. This can cause exhaustion, sleep deprivation, and even stomach problems. Another problem homework can cause is severe stress. In fact, according to Stanford news, 56 percent of students consider homework a primary source of stress. This can cause a student to have severe headaches. But some people would argue that those kids choose to do their homework late at night. They say that when they get home, they just go to relax or play outside. However not all students have a choice to do it earlier in the day. These kids have busy days after school, but teachers don't always believe that. After school they have sports practices, religious activities, or clubs after school. These activities don't end until around 4:30 the earliest to about 8:00 at the latest. But even when they get home, they can't go right into doing homework. They have to do chores, eat dinner, and maybe even watch their little siblings while their parents are still at work. If teachers would stop giving out homework, their students would be wide awake, and ready to learn for the school day. One final reason why homework should be banned is that not all students have the materials to do their homework the correct way.
Not all kids have access to the internet. Therefore, according to Pew Research Center only 33 percent of middle, and elementary school students, 23 percent of high schoolers, and about 11 percent of college students don't have access to the internet. Also, not all parents have money to buy their kids a computer. Also, not all computers have access to websites like schoology, kidblog, and even google chrome. But when it comes to printing, not all kids have one or they don't have a working printer. These teachers if they don't see a printed copy of the assignment the teacher gives it an incomplete. This is not fair for the kid. The student worked hours upon hours on that assignment but couldn't print it out so the teacher gives it a failing grade. You tell the teacher but the teacher comes up with another hundred ways for you could have printed it out, such as going to the library, in school, etc. But not all kids have a ride to the library and not all kids have time to print it out during school. Some people would argue that the schools could provide supplies for their kids. According to Institute of Education Sciences, 97 percent of schools provide computers that schools provide in the United States. However, not all schools have the budget to afford individual laptops to over 100
kids. In conclusion, homework should be banned. When teachers say that homework is a way to benefit your learning, homework just causes school to be harder for students. Homework is not a good tool to test a student's knowledge on the subject. Also, it can cause health problems, and not all students have the materials to complete the assignment. But, there is still ways to solve these problems. Obviously, the best way to go with it is to just get rid of homework completely. Schools like New York City Elementary has already took away homework. Imagine if everyone could come home and relax, get the eight or more hours of sleep you need, and not having to come home with a backpack half your body weight.
On September 12, 1962, JFK delivered a speech at Rice University in Texas in which he supported the space administration's program to land humans on the moon. His purpose is to make the US the country whose citizens and people would be the first to step on the moon or other planets. He used process analysis, logos, and cause and effect. In his speech, he tried to show the audience that Americans are able to make the impossible possible.
More than 70 percent of students have said that they have stress caused by homework
Making a decision for the future can be hard, but it can be even harder when people are torn between their passions and meeting other’s expectations. In today’s generation, most students are expected to have their career chosen by the time they are out of High School. They are trained to plan and map out their entire lives. Yet, college students still end up having an undecided major by the time they start their freshman year in college. A huge issue that is present in today’s society is that college students chose their major for the wrong reasons. Parents pressure students to pursue careers in business, medicine, politics, and law; however, unless practiced with passion, those careers are pointless.
“Thomas Aquinas once wrote that it is better to know a little of what is important than a lot of what is unimportant” (Stancil, 252). Students should have a balance of street smarts and book smarts so they can be successful in whichever career they may choose. If the typical education focuses on teaching the students only certain areas they may or may not use, then how will the students be completely prepare for life? If education is supposed to prepare students for life, then can anyone really limit or define education? Kim Jones, a CEO who wrote an article on education, claims “Education does not have a single purpose; it serves multiple objectives, and the relative importance of each of these objectives can be very personal” (Forbes.com).
...th mounds of work to be completed at home. It is unfair to expect students to pick up the slack for teachers who are not doing their jobs. Although homework can be used as a tool to reinforce, more often than not teachers are not using it this way, and in fact they are abusing this tool and it should be banned all together.
Since we were in kindergarten, we were taught to follow rules, form single file lines, and always told what to do. This “order” continues for the rest of your life if you decide to follow the education system. Why was school created? Everything school teaches has shaped our world for decades. School has influenced students to be on time and let them believe that a letter grade determines whether they are smart or stupid. Also, it teaches students how to memorize and not actually learn material. What is the purpose of school? Is it to make us smarter? Many students ask themselves this question right before a big test that will determine whether he/she receives a title in a specific subject. School is said to be place of greatness. However, it slowly teacher students how to be prepared to work in factory and office jobs. The next tardy goes from punishment to termination, the teacher turns
Students usually spend at least six hours at school. This does not include how much time it takes to complete their homework of their extracurricular activities. Should students not get a break from all the work? Adolescents are supposed to spend their time with their friends and family but instead, they spend it doing work. It is erroneous that students are not able to have an enjoyable time because of the work given by teachers. Soon we will grow up and our teenage years will be gone. It is inequitable that an abundant amount of students spend their time being stressed about whether their homework is complete or not. This is our time to live how we want before we turn eighteen and have to face the real problems in life. The majority of the time, the worksheets that teachers give are problems that will not be on the test. Many teachers pile on homework but they do not consider our work from other classes. By the time the students get to sixth period, they will have homework that will take about four hours to complete. In total, students will spend ten hours doing work for school, not including those who are playing sports. Homework is a struggle especially when they have something planned for that afternoon. Many parents give their children chores to do after school but homework tends to get in the way. Teachers should know that we have duties complete at home, and homework will take away from
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is a waste and kids and teens should choose whether they want to do their homework for extra credit and practice or not.
In today’s world, many people desire to enter the education school system and gain nothing but continuous knowledge and--when ready to graduate--be prepared for what is to come. This way of thinking, sadly is unrealistic. Majority of the time spent in school, children are being taught how to test and not necessarily survive in the real world. Children are also spending their time taking tests, such as the ACT, SAT, ISAT, which are said to either “make or break” a student. This highly stressed issue is shown through an advertisement that highlights on this serve issue of what the school system is truly like.
Children go to school for seven hours a day, when teachers make them do homework it causes them to get stressed. Furthermore if children understand what they learned at school why do they need to repeat it at home? If children are struggling on a certain subject, teachers should be able to help them directly, not with homework because giving them homework on something they don't know anything about is counterproductive. Instead private tutoring could be something schools provide for failing students and not homework.
Instead of having only extra cash from working after school, you can also gain many skills such as leadership skills. Students working while in high school helps prepare them for what the real world is actually like. I have an after school job, and it has taught me many things such as how to manage money and distribute my time better. Students should work part-time while in high school because it helps you to be more focused on your studies, and colleges will look for a better study and work ethic, and it gives you experience and helps you learn how to manage money. First off, when working part-time after school will help you to be more focused on your studies because, understanding the meaning of work and how much time is put in to get a
Some people have jobs, others play sports, and some kids like to spend their free time relaxing. When a student gets behind on his or her classwork, he or she has to spend time after a long day of school playing catch-up. For the most part, children in school already spend eight hours, five days a week, working hard in their classes. To add stress onto them after all of their work isn’t all that fair. Students should be able to focus on their other activities besides school even if they’ve been absent, rather than being penalized for not being in attendance at school.
Homework is way to stressful for kids who already have enough to do at school, so why give them work to do at home that just adds on to the headache Known as work? Teachers give out homework because they think it is helping kids education. What they don’t know is that the work they are giving out just overwhelms students who don’t know how to do that work. It also means that some students could possibly be getting bad grades for things that they don’t understand. This is very important to my claim because if we have less homework none of these things will happen to students who don’t understand the topic. What can take more experienced students 5-10 minutes can take others longer time periods to complete the work given. giving students less homework you should receive better quality homework. That paragraph should
Homework is one of the struggle that students have. In now days, students are having very hard time at doing homework. They use a lots of time to finish it. Students don’t have relaxing time because of homework time. Many teachers are giving home works to students, so they usually spend time to finish homework, essay, and projects.
Cheating is unacceptable no matter what type of situation it is. After reading about the Atlanta Public School scandal, and finding out the consequences that were given to the teachers, I totally agree that the behavior for the teachers were not justifiable. If you break the law, then you’re going to be punished and there’s no other way around it. I do believe that the long jail sentence given to the convicted teachers were a bit insane, but the teachers know all consequences of every law they break before agreeing to teach. In my opinion, the punishments don’t fit the crime because we have criminals and drug dealers on the street free but teachers in jail because they changed answers on an elementary school test. The justice system doesn’t always make sense sometimes, but at the end of the day, we all know the consequences if we commit the crime.
