Harris Cooper, a researcher on homework from Duke University, claims that too much homework causes stress. In this I paper will talk about the damaging effects homework has on a child, how homework causes students to dropout of school, and some ideas for an alternative to homework.
Children go to school for seven hours a day, when teachers make them do homework it causes them to get stressed. Furthermore if children understand what they learned at school why do they need to repeat it at home? If children are struggling on a certain subject, teachers should be able to help them directly, not with homework because giving them homework on something they don't know anything about is counterproductive. Instead private tutoring could be something schools provide for failing students and not homework.
When Parent and Child magazine asked author and educational critic Alfie Kohn about the argument that claims homework promotes academic achievement and helps children get ahead and why he is against homework, Alfie Kohn said
“By definition, "getting ahead" means defeating other kids, rath...
In ‘’Down with Homework’’ with Alfie Kohn. Kohn believes that homework is a bother to kids. He believes that kids’ lives’ will be easier and less stressful if they didn’t have homework. Homework puts a lot of stress on a kid and the teachers have to remember that these kids are little and that every family is different. Assignee too much homework could result in kid not doing the homework or giving up on school. I agree with Kohn because I’ve been there and I’m observing the same problem with my sisters. The more homework they have the more they don’t want to do it. Homework does not improve student learning.
Homework is for suckers. Homework causes stress for students as well as for parents. Homework is extremely demanding and many students are spending far too many hours after school to complete their homework assignments. Although, some students may be able to whiz right through their homework, other students crawl along struggling at a snail’s pace. Consequently, family time is put on the back burner due to the time constraints of homework. Additionally, any extracurricular activities are also put on hold. Homework is nothing more than a scapegoat for teachers so that they can pawn off their due responsibilities on parents and students. Homework should be banned for students Kindergarten through 8th grade because the negative effects do not out weight the benefits that come from homework.
Students usually spend at least six hours at school. This does not include how much time it takes to complete their homework of their extracurricular activities. Should students not get a break from all the work? Adolescents are supposed to spend their time with their friends and family but instead, they spend it doing work. It is erroneous that students are not able to have an enjoyable time because of the work given by teachers. Soon we will grow up and our teenage years will be gone. It is inequitable that an abundant amount of students spend their time being stressed about whether their homework is complete or not. This is our time to live how we want before we turn eighteen and have to face the real problems in life. The majority of the time, the worksheets that teachers give are problems that will not be on the test. Many teachers pile on homework but they do not consider our work from other classes. By the time the students get to sixth period, they will have homework that will take about four hours to complete. In total, students will spend ten hours doing work for school, not including those who are playing sports. Homework is a struggle especially when they have something planned for that afternoon. Many parents give their children chores to do after school but homework tends to get in the way. Teachers should know that we have duties complete at home, and homework will take away from
Did you know that there is 45% of students in the nation that do not get enough sleep due to homework? In fact, multiple parents have started a campaign to limit the homework teachers can assign to students. But teachers argue that homework is necessary. Students should not have homework. Homework causes more stress and less sleep.
Although homework may seem like drudgery, the hard work that is put into homework may pay off in the long run. In the article, “Does homework really work for students?” Jacqueline Carey, the mother of seventh grade student Micah Carey, stated that “homework gives [students] a good foundation for when they move on further in school” (Johnson). Not only that, but according to Donyall Dickey, principal at Murray Hill Middle School, “if students do not acquire things in class, they will acquire them through homework” (Johnson). As we can see, homework helps and prepares us for higher grade levels while in primary school that can possibly prepare us for college.
School is finally out and you just want to go home and relax. But the you remembered that you have homework. You also remembered you have soccer practice in an hour and it takes you longer than an hour to do your homework. You just don’t have time for homework.
We have all been in a similar situation, which makes us wonder, does homework actually help us? Research says no. Homework should not be given out at schools. Homework has no academic benefit, it takes away from other important things in our lives, and can affect kids’ health negatively. The hassle of homework just isn’t worth it!
People, normally adults, usually say that homework is the best way for students to improve themselves outside of class time. Yet, they don’t think much about the feelings of the students who were put under the pressure of homeworkoverload. I didn’t say homework is bad academically. In fact, it is really good for students to understand their lesson better by doing work by themselves; as long as they are not overloadedanyway. I’m not against the idea of having more homework for students, but too much would be a different thing that I might consider. Thus, my thought is teachers shouldn’t give too much homework to their students because it would cause a great deal of stress, making the students less interactive with their families, and spend too much time doing the homework.
The opposing claim is that students should have more homework because it helps them gain confidence that they have a bright future. “Students need to have more homework as if it were acting like a shield for their educational curriculum”. A good part of the argument is that it help the students get ready for anything that gets in there way so that they are ready to go to middle school! I do not think that they should have as much homework as given, although the counterclaim has a good point. Expecting kids to complete homework on time and do it correctly by the next morning could be too challenging for some
Kids are always complaining about homework. Either they have too much, they’re tired and don’t want to do it, or it’s too hard. It’s a major topic that kids think about. Finland has one of the greatest education systems and is usually referred to as the best in the world. Something unique about Finland is that they strongly dislike homework. It is frowned upon in their school systems. They believe that material should be mastered in the classroom with the help of a teacher, and not at home by yourself, and after countless studies on the human brain, neurologists are starting to believe that homework actually has no value and could even hurt the human brain. Which poses the question: to what extent does homework benefit students? Well it clearly does not benefit students for three reasons that we will see. We can see that, first of all, it causes stress in a household, which is counterproductive to learning. Second, excess homework damages the human brain in both children and teenagers, and third, it takes time away from hobbies/ passions, family time, and becoming an adult (crucial things for development).
It is said that homework really did its job over the years. Homework does a lot to children including their improvement in their study habits, the attitude that they have at school and outside of it, gaining independent problem-solving skills and many more. (Johnson, 2016) The debate about homework should be based on the students if they need to find a solution about it.
Schools would run smoother if students did not have homework. Students should not receive homework. First of all, many students have enough things to do after school. Also, some students don’t have the right resources to complete their homework.
The 2013 American Psychological Association survey, for example, found that 45 percent of U.S. schoolchildren were stressed-out by school and homework was the leading cause (Boccella). Alfie Kohn, who wrote The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing a decade ago, argues, too much homework can cause considerable harm, raising levels of frustration, anxiety, and family tension while robbing time for imaginative play and outdoor exercise, and most importantly crushing the potential to get excited about learning (Boccella). Anne Heffron, principal of Merion Elementary in Lower Merion, said, “ I think sometimes homework is a bigger stressor for parents than for the kids” (Boccella). It doesn’t help that a D students are expected to do the same work as an A
Annie also states how homework in science, english, and history has “little to no impact” on student test scores, but it had a positive effect for math homework. With the major impact from these quotes and articles that have a great explanation for the reasons of unnecessary homework, and the significance that
Homework doesnt help students, it hurts them. Students are drilled with work during the school hours and then are giving homework from almost all of their teachers every night. There are negative points of overloading students with homework. According to William Crain, Ph. D., a professor of psychology at City College of New York and the author
