Wellness relates to a state of being physically & mentally healthy in all aspects of your life. That is just a general statement because it can way more than just that. Such as, taking personal responsibility and cautious steps towards living life. Once you start having complete control of risk factors that can harm you that indicates wellness. There are many ways to describe exactly what wellness is. To be honest, it differs mostly on the belief of the individuals who is explaining it. Now, some people believe there are eight dimensions of wellness, but others believe there are six or seven. However, with my own personal wellness philosophy I only see one main dimension that includes four mini dimensions with a similar topic that relates to the main dimension. The dimensions I choose starting from the base of my pyramid are; Physical Wellness, Social Wellness, Emotional Wellness, and Vital Wellness. First, physical wellness includes parts of life that are important to keep yourself in top condition. Ideal physical well-being is produced through the mixture of valuable physical activity and adhering to a good diet. Essential parts of physical wellness involve building strong muscles and stamina, cardiovascular stamina and flexibility. In addition, resilience for professionals is to know how to cope and come out of a stressful situation without any kind of remorse. Furthermore, prevention is to prevent disastrous of one’s life. For example, an individual needs to re-evaluate his or her life on a daily basis. Wellness provides the mind, body, feelings, and spiritual well-being individuals gain in their daily lifestyle. When most individuals in society hear the phrase wellness they assume it is referring to physical wellness. Which is true, but did society know that physical wellness is part of the seven wellnesses that are broken down into extension? Which are known for physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental, and occupational wellnesses. These seven wellnesses help provide ways for individual to do daily and guide individuals to maintain a good health from inside and out.
Wellness is imperative to a healthy life. Sometimes, people do not really consider what makes up wellness, they simply think of it as being “well”. Wellness may be a state of being “well”, however, it incorporates different areas such as nutrition, health, safety, nurturing, and emotional stability. People must be healthy in all of these areas in order to achieve wellness. This is not an easy task for an adult, but definitely not for children.

What is wellness? “Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy life. Wellness is also a process for change and growth” (Health Topic – What is wellness?). To have acceptable wellness you should have an equal amount of social, emotional/mental, and physical health. I, myself, believe that I have an okay wellness, I mean not like full wellness but just enough to pass I'll say. But how am I living in wellness?
Health and Well-being – Health and wellbeing are perceptions that relate to and define a persons state of life. It is quite often defined as the absence of disease but this is very limiting as health and wellbeing have many different dimensions. The meaning can vary according to the individual, for example somebody who has a disease or disability may refer to themselves as healthy when they are managing their conditions to the point where it is not negatively influencing their life where as someone free from a disease or disability would consider that in itself as being in good health and wellbeing and getting a disease would be becoming unhealthy with poor wellbeing. Physical health is the efficient functioning of the body. Social health is based on behavior, reactions and relationships. Emotional health covers the managing of emotions. Mental health refers to ones thought processes and attitudes. Spiritual health is a person’s positive sense of belonging, meaning and purpose of life. They all affect how we make choices, react to situations and relate to other individuals. Well-being is merely the presence of satisfaction or successful in your own happiness.
The definitions of wellness root all the way back to 2000 B.C with Aristotle. He was the first person to document about wellness as an explanation of health and illness. Whereas Descartes and others saw wellness as more of duality of the mind body, which gave way to current mindset of a more rounded definition of wellness (Myers and Sweeney, 2008). Now, Myers defines wellness as the mind, body and spirit working together to achieve an optimum state of health and wellbeing so that one can live life as full as possible (Myers and Sweeney, 2005). When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. Knowing how to act correctly, control our feelings, channel our frustrations, and improve in each dimension of wellness will lead to a satisfactory life. Spiritual, physical, emotional, nutritional, and social wellness define the biggest components of life and thriving in them is vital.
Physical Wellness Physical wellness involves many aspects that are needed in order to keep your health and body in the best condition possible. An individual can maintain healthy and positive physical wellness through beneficial physical activity and exercises as well as forming healthy eating habits. The main components of physical wellness include muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular strength. Each of these qualities plays a major role when it comes to physical wellness. Research suggests that people who are physically well understand their own feelings, are able to achieve emotional stability, and are able to accept their own limitations (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2015).
According to the text, wellness is defined as an "integrated and dynamic level of functioning oriented toward maximizing potential, dependent on self-responsibility." It involves both preventive health behaviors and a shift in thinking and attitude. Wellness is a lifelong promise to oneself of growth and achievement in each of the seven dimensions: emotional, spiritual, physical, occupational, intellectual, environmental, and social. It means a lifetime of ongoing change and always striving toward higher levels healthy and successful living. This means, ultimately, that one must live a life that caters to each of those dimensions both individually and collectively. Not living a healthy lifestyle, can have damaging effects on both health and life, and not only yours but the people that are around you. An unhealthy lifestyle means more illness and more expenses to treat those illnesses. This means a bigger burden on an already challenged and over-budgeted healthcare system. Poor health also means more time lost at work, less quality recreational time, and shorter lifespans. Not to mention, the onset of major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.
What is wellness and why is it important in my life? Wellness can be broadly described as the culmination of actively making multiple choices that will lead oneself to a happier and healthier life. Wellness is not merely being in shape or having an IQ of 130. Rather, wellness is an active process through which we can better many aspects of ourselves. In general, most people wish to be the best version of themselves that they can be, leading to the crucial knowledge that wellness is an important topic for everyone.
Emotional health includes a person who has full control of his emotions of himself as well as for those people around him and has developed self-confidence, trust within his peers and love that is unwavering in the midst of hardships. Intellectual health describes a person ability to reinforce his experiences through learnings. A socially healthy person is one who can forge strong bonds within his acquaintances and to be able to cope up the usual day-to-day drama. Spiritual wellness involves the strengthening of ones’ belief and at the same time being open to new beliefs. And a physically healthy person takes care of his body and practices healthy habits.
