Abstract Whether you work in the private or public sector, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a business. To run a successful business you must employ the practices of a market leader. Market leadership requires professional development. Through professional development, strategic plans can be learned and then used to improve leadership and the organization as a whole. In the following paragraphs I will discuss the characteristics of an EMS market leader and the role professional development has played and will continue to play in my transition into a market leader. A market leader must embrace the five business priorities and make them part of his daily routine as well as his or her long term career plan. The first characteristic involves the prioritizing of people. People inside the organization as well as the customer on the outside are valuable. Communication with people is a key factor. A market leader must have open communication with those on the inside and outside of the organization. Employees must feel free to express their thoughts and concerns. I if the employee feels that they have be heard, then they will have a more positive attitude toward the organization and thus be more productive. Likewise the communication path must be open for the customer. Customer feedback is essential in determining the public outlook toward the organization. If there is no way of obtaining customer feedback, opportunity for improvement is lost. A second characteristic of a market leader is the ability to define strategic objectives. Strategic objectives are made up of plans and goals. One must be able to develop plans and goals for the near as well as the distant future. Plans are the means to achieve goals. The EMS Officer must develop a set of goals and a timeline in which to accomplish them. The first action I need to take is to determine how much of the training budget I can use to achieve these goals. Once I have an idea of the overtime I can use, I will be able to determine the amount of instructor candidates I can train and classes I can offer. To achieve the quantity goal, the action will be to increase the instructor pool. To do this I will open up communication by emailing all members of the organization and offer the opportunity to become an instructor in a given class. The instructor candidates that respond will already have buy in and will be ready to collaborate with the plan. To achieve the quality goal, the action I will take will be to ensure the instructor candidates will have all the tools they need to be successful, such as instructor manuals. The activities associated with this strategic plan will include practice time and the monitoring of the teach back class. After the 90 days, I will reassess the program to see if the goal of increasing the quantity of classes was met or if more instructors are needed. Background Information In implementing a strategic plan for Coastal Medical Center, our consulting team has conducted many analyses and formed numerous strategies in order for Coastal Medical Center to be successful. Such assessments include an internal analysis, external analysis, gap analysis, and SWOT analysis. In conducting these analyses, our consulting team was able to better understand the internal environment, external environment, where the organization currently stands in terms of performance, and the major strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that oppose the Coastal Medical Center. From our inquiry, we will be able to establish a strategic plan that best fits the organization’s needs.
After analyzing the Coastal Medical Center, it is apparent that the employees and staff have no conception of the mission, vision, and values of this health care facility. In addition to this lack of structure, CMC has many projects in the midst of production that lack support of a common goal, employees are unsatisfied with their jobs, the two boards lack ability to agree on strategic decisions for the organization,, and the medical center has a dismal reputation when it comes to quality care.

Johnson & Johnson has the specific leadership model, the Leadership Imperatives, where all employees are expected to implement in their daily practice to lead the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies for future [1]. The Leadership Imperatives consists of four Imperatives: Lead, Deliver, Connect, and Shape. The model is a common requirement to assess employees’ success. As a manager, I also have to personify this leadership model. Therefore, in this report, I would like to examine how I can improve my leaderships by connecting lessons learned in the class with four elements in the model.
