400 words.)(5 pts) Public health can be defined as the approach to medicine that is concerned with the health of the community as a whole. It is about protecting and improving the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease, injury prevention, detection, and control of infectious diseases. Many factors contribute to a long life, including demographics, socioeconomics, genetics, environment, and behaviors. It is important to assess these factors when attempting to increase life expectancy and improve health status, because positive health practices result in higher life expectancies and better health. As a future healthcare leader, I will start by collecting data on the health of the community that my organization serves. I will develop a five-step program to contribute to public health efforts within my organization. My five-step program towards public health will involve monitoring, diagnosing and investigating, informing and educating, partnering, and researching. I will monitor the health indicators of my community and be aware of health needs and disparities. I will seek to identify hazards through research and analysis and diagnose root causes. Once root causes are recognized, improvement is possible. It is …show more content…
Patients who are already in a poor state of health can become infected more easily. There are several treatments that leave patients vulnerable to infection. For instance, immunosuppression and antacid treatment undermine the body 's defenses. The prolonged use of antibiotics may reduce the effectiveness of a patient 's own immune system. If a hospital warns patients of the risk of infections before the patient begins treatment and gives the patient an opportunity to opt out of the treatment, it can be excused from assuming the responsibility of the
The health care organization with which I am familiar and involved is Kaiser Permanente where I work as an Emergency Room Registered Nurse and later promoted to management. Kaiser Permanente was founded in 1945, is the nation’s largest not-for-profit health plan, serving 9.1 million members, with headquarters in Oakland, California. At Kaiser Permanente, physicians are responsible for medical decisions, continuously developing and refining medical practices to ensure that care is delivered in the most effective manner possible. Kaiser Permanente combines a nonprofit insurance plan with its own hospitals and clinics, is the kind of holistic health system that President Obama’s health care law encourages. It still operates in a half-dozen states from Maryland to Hawaii and is looking to expand...
The program united my interest in healthcare and public health coupled with cultivating leadership and management skills. I have gained a broad exposure to the core public health disciplines, a macro-level understanding of the health care system, and honed my professional skills in direct application towards healthcare delivery. Ultimately, I aspire to practice at an urban hospital, and to have a leadership role where I can leverage my experiences and perspective to influence hospital initiatives to help underserved
State and local public health departments throughout the country have the responsibility for improving health in workplaces, schools, and communities through identifying top health problems within society and developing a plan to improve. Barriers the public health system has encountered over the years include: changes in the overall health system that support cost containment and improved health, and an increase in the number of individuals with insurance coverage for direct preventive services; reduction of qualified public health professional and funding at all levels of government; increasing focus on accountability, with higher expectations for demonstrating a return on investment in terms of cost and health improvement (Trust, 2013). In the near future, health departments ...
The future of healthcare is ever changing, and with that comes change management, which brings individuals on board with that change. According to Vora (2013), the change management model includes first, determine the need for change. Second, prepare and plan for the change. Third, implement the change. Finally, sustain the change (Carroll, 2015). As a leader, I feel that it is my obligation to not only continue with my education, but to aid others in furthering their education and
Some of the reasons for the increase in the cost of health care are: third party payments; imperfect market; technology growth, increase in the number of elderly population; current medical model of health care delivery; multi payer system and administrative cost; defensive medicine. One societal issue that healthcare organizations must respond is the high healthcare cost. The high healthcare cost is the reason of increasing burdens of many Americans. A survey was done by Henry Kaiser Family Foundation and learned that 58 percent of people did not seek treatment that they needed because of the rising healthcare cost (Huff/Post50, 2012). Healthcare organization can help with the issue by supporting their community thru social support, education of preventive benefits, health promotion, health management, counseling, and person centered planning. The second societal issue is the healthcare availability. Disparities in healthcare access remain a problem in America. Healthcare organization can help people in the community thru education and behavioral healthcare. According to Wyland (2014), chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and substance use disorders are behaviorally based, necessitating recurring instead of acute intervention to be treated successfully. Educational and community based programs play an important role in preventing disease and injury, improving health, and enhancing quality of life. Everyone have personal responsibility in one’s own health through active participation, education, and lifestyle change (Harkness & DeMarco, 2016). The third issue is the healthcare equity. The reason of gaps in the quality of care is due to the inability of healthcare organizations to integrate improvement measures into the process of care (Mayberry, Nicewander, Qin, & Ballard, 2006). It is important to ensure that care is accessible and
Healthcare is intriguing. The health and wellness of people always has been intriguing and always will be. My background in healthcare came as an environmental pass down with a father as a Registered Nurse and a mother in healthcare management. It was inevitable that the journey of healthcare started being instilled without my knowledge of it, as a young child. A constant learning in the health sciences and management directed my way. By the start of college, the intrigue lead to compassion, lighting a fire for the administration of healthcare. This calling spurred by a great woman, my mother, who is a national redesign award winner by the Bureau of Primary Healthcare in Health Disparities. These footsteps down her similar path with careful guidance, but not to be confused with an easy path.
Health shapes our life, if you practice bad health practices, chances are you’re often sick, overweight, disease, or other medical issue. There are three main points of a person’s health, not just their physical health. The three parts are; social, mental/emotional, and of course physical. Setting health goals depends on age, body, and health of a person. I am 14 years old, and I am 5 feet tall, around 100 pounds. I’m generally the correct size for someone of my age. Though, it’s hard to achieve perfect health.
In some way, public health is seen as a modern philosophical and ideological perspective based on ‘equity’ and aimed to determine inequitable in society. It seen as a ‘science’ and ‘art’ in the sense that it deals with the cause of disease, treatment of illness as well as it involves laboratory experiments, intervention and promoting of health of the population. Winslow (1920, p. 23) defined public health as ‘the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting physical health and efficiency through organised community efforts for the sanitation of the environment, the control community infections, the education of the individual in principles of personal hygiene, the organisation of medical and nursing service for early diagnosis and preventive treatment of disease, and the development of social machinery which will ensure to every individual in the community a standard of living adequate for the maintenance of health. On the other hand, it is ‘the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through organised effort of society’ (Acheson, 1998; in Cowley S, 2002, p. 261).
Education is neither linear nor static. It requires evolution and fluctuations. I received my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at UNC Charlotte, and now it is time for a prime conversion to be made. Attending the Masters of Public Health program at UNC Charlotte would open the door for me to pursue my career aspirations in health care. Specifically, I am interested in epidemiological methods in community health. My ambition, perseverance, and work ethic have brought me to a high point, and enrolling in the Masters in Public Health program would raise that threshold even higher.
As someone who has many aspirations in life, I understand having both long and short-term goals is important. One of my long-term professional objectives includes being a community service manager at a health center. With this I am hoping to work with many other healthcare professionals to coordinate health programs and initiatives to improve the health of communities. Having a background in health promotion alongside the leadership and management skills and the real world experience that I intended to gain from this program will give me all I need to make this
I have chosen Public Health as my career path because I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. Also, I chose healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness. Moreover, Public Health is a challenging, diverse and dynamic field. My philosophy of health is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities and the population. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public
The improvement of health, enforcing policies, and monitoring comes from interrelationships between governmental and non-governmental entities. Since the 21st century the apparent need for an improved public health infrastructure has been a recurring topic on the state, local, and national level. In 2010 the Affordable Care Act authorized numerous clinical health reforms, a big step towards providers being accountable. {ACOs} Accountable care organizations are conducting health assessments and reporting metrics to payers. According to Magnuson and Fu, Jr., “Public health agencies must, in turn, evolve from being the only entities capable of assessing and monitoring population health to strategic and enabling partners involved in population health practice” (2014). A sense of involvement and shared work load is needed to help shift the challenges public health officials face. Public health officials promote and protect the community. With the involvement of other organizations more polices can be enforced and created to improve population
At an early stage in my medical school in Iraq, I realized the great positive impact of public health on the community in health education orientation, disease prevention and health well-being as a general and what affirm it later, my clinical practice as a physician in Iraq first then Dubai later. The public health was a major integral block in my clinical practice to educate the people towards a healthier lifestyle and implementing the preventative screening measures necessary to get healthy well protected community.

There are numerous public health problems that can be addressed in my Southside of Chicago community. Among the several public health problems facing my Southside of Chicago community there are two that are more urgent. Health education or one might say lack thereof is a problem that needs to be addressed. My community is plagued with many of the residents suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and the killer virus known as HIV. In most cases these conditions can be prevented with healthier lifestyles and access to nutritious organic foods. In addition, environmental health is another urgent problem my community is facing. Access to clean, safe water and air is supposed to be a fundamental human right aimed at a healthy environment. Yet, my community consists a waste contaminated beach, numerous deteriorated building that are still occupied, and a countless number of restaurant and stores supplying our residents with services that are endangering their health.
