Most adults need to work in order to pay their bills, provide for their families and feel a sense of accomplishment. While there is a prevalent need to work, many people choose to simply do their job and do not take time to develop in their profession. Professional development is putting in the effort, over and above your present duties, with the intention to develop and advance within your career. There are a variety of ways one can choose to develop professionally; however, attaining a college education, acquiring industry recognized certifications, developing a social network, and dressing for success, are the foundational areas that will provide sustainable professional development. “Most students come away [from college] with (1) a greater ability to think analytically and (2) the discipline to see a task through from beginning to end–two very attractive qualities in an potential employee ("The Benefits of Earning a College Degree", n.d.).” A degrees demonstrate that you have a solid foundation in general education, as well as specific general knowledge based on your particular degree and level of completed education. In addition, you have learned how to think analytically, a skill that is imperative in many careers. “Analytical [and] Research Skills deals with your ability to assess a situation, seek multiple perspectives, gather more information if necessary, and identify key issues that need to be addressed (Hansen & Hansen, "Top Skills and Values Employers Seek from Job-Seekers", n.d.). Having a degree, demonstrates that you have perseverance, the ability to set a long term goal, and through hard work and dedication accomplish the goal. It also exhibits your willingness and ability to learn and can validate your ability to master the requirements of the position.
