When I first stepped foot into your classroom, I was overwhelmed with anxiety; lacking the imperative writing skills, thinking skills and problem solving skills for an undergrad; having graduated from a school that cared little for their students academics. I vaguely knew of MLA formatting, appropriate punctuation, developing thesis statements and conveying personal opinions in both informal and formal essays. However, through the duration of this course, I noticed that my writing was improving. By completing the in class writings, reading responses, discussion notes and mandatory formal papers; these writings helped me to become a better scholar. I soon knew of the appropriate ways to cite sources, incorporate rhetorical questions into personal …show more content…
Though I did answer the questions being asked, I answered it simply, when I could have made it unique and interesting. The purpose of daybook writings are to allow for creativity, as well as in-depth thinking. I clearly did not convey these elements in the first in class writing. Not to mention, I wrote the entry in an informal manner, when my intended audience was you. I shouldn’t have wrote as though I was conversing with a dear friend about the events that unfolded over the weekend. I should have wrote the entry in a formal manner since I’m writing to someone with authority. I also wished to take note of the fact that this writing spoke of my expectations and goals for this course. Looking back at the entry, everything written holds true. I did end up finding the class enjoyable, and the readings interesting. In addition, I made sure to actively participate in discussions and take the class seriously. Comparing this daybook entry to the last documented entry (focusing on the gallery crawl feedback) was far more detailed and professionally written. Given the little feedback received from my peers, I expanded on what they said, which clearly displayed growth in my writing. I went from short and simple paragraphs to writing beyond what was expected. These in class writings not only improved my writing skills, but thinking skills as well, having to break down the questions being asked. However, the daybook …show more content…
One of them being, I found the topic I chose too personal, considering it focused on my experience with sexual harassment. I barely spoke to anyone of my experience with sexual harassment; hence, I found writing about it (for all to see) hard. However, once I got through the introduction I was no longer uneasy about sharing my story. Nevertheless, I found myself stopping multiple times while in the process of writing this essay, due to the fact that I was having issues linking my narrative with the information gathered. After going to the writing center, I learned that I needed to find an area of transition in my narrative, and then redirect the discussion to the research gathered. The advice given, helped me to complete my essay. After receiving my grade for this paper, I began revising. I made sure to incorporate more data (considering I was lacking beforehand), such as in my third paragraph when I included statistics from RAINN about sexual harassment. I also made sure to correct errors in punctuation by moving unnecessary commas, periods and semicolons (this can be seen throughout my paper). I made sure to reword some sentences as can be seen in paragraphs 3, 6-10, and 14-15. I combined some paragraphs that could have easily gone together, such as paragraphs 9-10 and 14. I added new information to my narrative, such as in paragraph 9 when I wrote, “I recall storming out of the auditorium with
As a student, I have learned many different skills that I will take with me throughout my journey from this course. We have traversed many different types of writing styles, which any college student, or any person for that
My sixteen week class in English 111. I was really nervous about this class. Because English has never been my strong point. This class has hard, but fun all at the same time. I learn a lot from this class. Meanwhile, the first day of class you handed a paper with a question on it. “The first thing I want to say to you who are students is that you must not think of being here to receive an education; instead, you will do much better to think of being here to claim one.” Even though putting my all in what I have learned, claiming my education with hard work because using the skills of the meal plan, as we write to different audiences and learning to be a Critically thinker as I start becoming a critically-Literate Citizenship.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
I improved on many aspects of my writing throughout the duration of this class, but there are still some things I need to refine. Over the course my writing skills have gotten better due to the instructor’s feedback, peer reviews, and just me learning. I enjoyed peer reviews because sometimes it is easier to relate to someone my own age. The overall structure and flow of my essays have improved, as well as the use of word choice and quotations. Throughout this course, I was able to apply critical thinking and reading skills to different texts, compose essays with appropriate content development and organization, use correct style by practicing the steps of the writing process, and reflect on my own development as a writer. However, I still need to work on demonstrating correctness, including punctuation, mechanics, and
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
My progression as a writer has steadily improved over the past semester. Expanding sentence variety and experiencing in-class discussion has elevated my writing style to another level. I have learned how to successfully attack time management issues head on and how to research effectively. My ability to present information in a logical and organized fashion has reached new heights and my punctuation has become much better. I have improved upon areas that I was already competent in while addressing the weaker aspects of my writing. This class has been an invaluable learning experience that granted me many opportunities to become a masterful writer. One of those opportunities was the persuasive paper assignment.
I understand that my action must have a consequence but I have attached a revised essay. In the revised essay, I corrected my mistakes and was sure to cite all sources. I realize I should have done this on Tuesday but hope you can look at my revisions and grade me off of my writing and the improvements that I made. I hope you will read my revisions and take into consideration my hard work throughout this semester.
I needed to pay attention to multiple areas of the course as I wrote it. Therefore, it felt as though it was a bigger assignment than others. Nevertheless, I liked how all came together in a single document. I was satisfying to see that the course I developed with Dr. Settlage’s guidance taking a shape in a way that is professionally presentable. It was nice added bounce knowing that Saybrook faculty members were supportive in offering the course to their students in the next semester. It meant that the syllabus was not a mere hypothetical document. It was satisfying to create a document, which has a purpose in the world beyond this independent
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
Over this past semester I have grown greatly as a writer. At the beginning of the semester I was not very confident in my writing because I did not think I had the skills to create strong pieces of writing. Not only have I grown as a writer, but I now enjoy writing more. I believe I have grown as a writer in many ways. Some of these include; I am now able to extend my wording to fit a page requirement, I am able to format my writing in MLA format, I have learned new writing strategies, and I am able to write in many styles of writing.
Final Reflection Essay Portfolio Participation During the course of this min-mester I have attended class 90% of the time needed or asked by my professor. The other 10% that I was unable to attain class was due to the fact that life its self cannot be avoided no matter how hard on tries. As far as my Active Engagement during this course I would say I did great. Putting forth the effort to social engage in the class as well as engage in groups to successfully gather the information the professor Dr. Kennedy was giving the students and I with the outcome of the progress my writing has come.
In order to do that, I had to describe why this topic affected me. These capabilities that I have are ones I was able to develop over the course of this semester. Now that I can recognize my skills, I can focus on how to improve these skills even more. Even though I’m good at poetry, description, and narration, I can still build and improve these skills.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and

Introduction to University Writing has instilled many valuable lessons upon me, from refreshing basic writing techniques to gaining confidence in myself. To begin with, I was apprehensive about starting this educational journey with a full time job and family. However, by utilizing the time management skills suggested in Unit 4, the reorganization of my personal time has allowed adequate instructional time. The resources available to me have strengthened my writing techniques. As mentioned in last week’s complete assignment, Paperrater.com has been a tremendous asset in creating a more proficient writer.
