Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays. The classes first major writing assignment was simple for the most part in which we were given a clear cut path on what to do. The objective was to analyze an article from a book and explain to the audience of what it was about. I chose the article “Land Of The Giants” by Alex Tizon because the story resonated with me because i am also an immigrant like Alex and many of his experiences i went through as well. The only minor trouble that was presented was the word count and personally i am someone who likes to get straight to the point but with this essay i had to expand and explain my perception of the article. …show more content…
Like in the first essay i had to use the skill of expand and explain without changing any facts of the source. In this essay i had a lot of help from my background knowledge as a student that hopes to pursue in a career in politics i understand the majority of why the candidates did what they did. I believe that the analyzing portion of the essay was much more difficult than the first one because there is so much more aspects to be aware of like lighting and tone of
Whether the goal is to reach unlimited number of audiences or to address the presumed audiences, discussing issues surrounding arguments thoroughly is the key concept I seem to overlook. Overall, the biggest lesson here is to adapt writing for a general audience and master to build arguments and support them effectively and precisely. As Irene Clark notes, “ Instead, students are asked to write for a “general audience,” a concept that many students find difficult to understand”(6). Writing a literacy narrative essay, it was difficult for me attaining the perfect balance of information and description. I have to develop a sense of what information is critically necessary for the story to reach the intended audience and satisfy their expectations. I need to learn to write in such a way that my readers can visualize just as I imagine
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Recently, I wrote an essay in my Pre-History Humantics class about why I felt Romans were inventors of culture versus maintainers of culture. I used comprehensive reading skills to analyze the text and provide examples on how I based my conclusion. In addition, I used persuasive methods in effort to persuade the reader to agree with my stance. In the 2016 Presidential election I casted my vote for a candidate based on an analysis of that person and what I thought they stood
In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
Throughout my essay I tried to not summarize the article and I feel like I was successful at not summarizing and instead analyzing.
English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
I have enjoyed learning about the topics we have learned about, from education to this sports unit. Writing has never been my strong suit and I think that this class has helped me. I like learning about the different styles of argument and what devices to use when making the strongest claim. Throughout the education essay, I learned a lot about my writing and that I write better, when I am enthusiastic about the subject. I was and am very interested in these topics, and I love trying to relate the topics back to my personal experiences. In the next semester, I hope to read closer into the text and take better notes. I think that these two major essays would have been easier if I had notes to reflect on and review, rather than taking notes for the essay. I am excited to start the second semester with this mindset as we enter into a new
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
The greatest difficulty that I came across doing the first essay was retracing the past, retracing the sadness. Having to bring back sad memories that made my life terrible at the time. Doing the essay, I learned that I have gone through a lot of crap. I was sinking in quicksand and now I stand on the quicksand like it is rock solid. I am proud of myself. I was able to turn my life around and be the person that I am today. I might have the potential to be a good writer someday. People compliment on my writing skills every now and then when I write something long. That makes me feel like a real student. I say that because an old History teacher of mine used to tell kids to be students when they were not doing their work.
I grew up in a small, close-minded, community that had insignificant minority people throughout it. I did not have a lot of experience with racial and ethnic groups. I did, however, have some experiences with children as well as adults who had learning disabilities as well as autism spectrum disorder, down syndrome, and fetal alcohol syndrome. When I was in elementary school, I had a classmate who had down syndrome; she was in and out of our classroom periodically throughout the day. In junior high; I was a peer helper during leadership class and in high school, I was a peer helper. During high school, I also was a Special Olympic instructor which was very rewarding. Right now, I feel that I could someday handle the responsibility of meeting
For my first essay I did a rhetorical analysis of William Faulkner Nobel Prize acceptance speech. My second was a visual analyses of a music video, Islands by the XX. And my last essay was a comparative analysis of “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and A Rose for Emily. I found the fist essay to be very challenging; it had some rough edges that I struggled to remove. The concept of literary analysis was somewhat foreign to me: It is very different from the persuasive essays I was taught to write in high school. I enjoyed writing the second essay because I got a chance to analyze media; this essay seemed to write itself. I had a hard time writing what was being depicted in the video in a simplistic, easy to follow manner, but overall I though this essay was strong. The final last major essay was the hardest to write. In a manner that supported sound thesis, I had to decide what aspects of each literary work I was going to analyze and through what facets I would do so. In the beginning of the semester I would not have known where to start on this essay. There are aspects of this essay I could have written in a better way, but I believe I showed growth considering this was the most challenging essay to
I enjoyed writing the analysis paper because I got to discover why Donald Trump is such a popular political candidate. It was fun to watch how crazy his tweets could get. I also enjoyed writing this essay because I felt like I grew a lot from last semester. Last semester, I never had a clear process or clear idea before I started writing my first draft. This essay I worked through my ideas and was not afraid to share them with others. In all writing classes before this I was very shy about my writing and I am trying to get away from that so that I can get help and make my essays better. I think that by trying to reach out and be more open about my ideas, I was able to make my writing a lot better.
For me writing is one of my favorite things to do. I enjoy how you can write something and look back on it and see how well you have developed as a writer. At the beginning of the semester my writing was all over the place and it wasn’t written as well as I would have liked, however, I feel that my supporting sources was something that was good in my first essays. I had hoped to improve my organization and my introductions and conclusions. I feel that I really did improve with both my organization and my introductions and conclusions, before taking this class I was an average writer, which I wanted to improve. My organization in essay before this class wasn’t as good as it should have been as well as my introductions and conclusions. I had hoped to become an overall better writer after taking this class.
