The first part of my peer mentor plan focused on a presentation regarding how to study for midterms. The idea was that this presentation would be a simple discussion with the use of a visual aid. The presentation was intended to provide first-year students with the tools needed to improve academic success. Me and my instructor Nick decided not to take time out of class for this particular project. The project didn't come together quite the way I had hoped, and it turned out to be longer than I had anticipated. My class had already missed so much class time from the Wednesday information sessions that we deemed it not worth the extra loss of time. We decided instead to minimize that allocated time and use it to inform the students how to properly …show more content…
I decided to create a short YouTube video showing students how to properly record/send these video/audio files as part of their homework. Nick and I decided it would be best to include this in an E-mail which contained all the necessary information. After sending the e-mail I spent just a few minutes in the next class to address any questions people had. There haven’t been any problems following the presentation, and everyone was able to successfully record their own audio files. A few students mentioned that they were happy I had created the video, and I’m glad we found a way to utilize my understanding of technology to assist the first year students with their homework. Overall I think I still managed to achieve my goal of providing first-year students with the tools needed to improve academic success. Additionally, I think this informed them that I, as a resource, am useful for more than just class-related info. Hopefully, the students will go forth knowing that I am willing to help them with a variety of problems. I also organized group events as the second part of my peer mentor
In my Teaching Professions with Field Experience class, we were to create two lesson plans throughout the semester; one that involved the use of technology and the other without. The rules that went along with the lesson plans were as follows: the speaker is supposed to act out the lesson that they have prepared and their classmates were supposed to act accordingly to what grade level the lesson pertained to. Lastly, during the presentations, the students were to write three good qualities the speaker or the presentation had. In addition, they had to write one wish which was something a student thinks would make the lesson better. For the first project lesson I constructed, I incorporated the use of technology to discuss the identification and use of monochromatic colors for the sixth grade level.
A Training Guide for College Tutors and Peer Educators by Sally Lipsky defines the role and importance of peer tutors’ on college campuses, the importance of promoting active learning, how to incorporate critical thinking and questioning skills, assessing students’ learning, collaborative learning and group work. Furthermore, this book defines tutoring as a proactive process, the value of diversity and students, online assistance, and a summary of effective peer lead sessions. One of the major strengths of this book is the learning activities throughout to assist peer tutors with their tutees. For example, the activity in Chapter 2 (Promoting Active Learning) has what the tutor may potentially hear
Finally, I learned how to be more responsible by myself. In my last classes, my teachers were technically always there to tell me step by step what to do and how to do my assignments. In a certain way, it made me kind of lazy and entirely dependent of my teachers. However in this course it was not like that; instead, my instructor just gave me the assignments, instructions, and deadlines, and I must write my essays and summited it on time. This absence of guide absolutely made me to react that it was time to me to do my assignments by myself, demonstrate what I know, and ask for help just whenever it is

The task at hand, was to create a presentation which would include some of the barriers and facilitators within inter-professional teams. My team consisted of two adult nurses, physiotherapists, optometrists and myself- a mental health nurse. Initially, when we were given the task, I assumed that it would be a straight forward task and no issues would arise. I quickly discovered that I was far from correct. As a team we faced many barriers that we would need to overcome in order to complete the assignment. .
The words of my mentor echoed inside my head ever since that day and completely changed my outlook on school. In the next weeks to the end of the school year that followed I applied and transformed those words into a state of pure focus. As a result passed all of my remaining classes,I blew through those assignments like a jet soaring across the open
As we discussed the potential of such software we realized this might be a way for our students who missed class to not miss out on learning. Thus, we began to record our live lessons using screen capture software. We posted our lectures online so our students could access them. When we did this, YouTube was just getting started and the world of online video was just in its infancy. In all honesty, we recorded our lessons out of selfishness. We were spending inordinate amounts of time re-teaching lessons to students who missed class, and the recorded lectures became our first line of defense.
I felt that doing my Senior Project on reality shows was too boring. Half way through the project I realized that my topic did not seem to interest me very much. Also, I had a very hard time coming up with a good idea for a product that would be connected to reality shows. But with the help of Mr. Daly we finally came up with an idea for an event. However, the event was not very successful. Only one person came to the event so I wasn’t able to obtain much data. As a result I had to change my product. It was very frustrating when I had to come up with a whole new product, but with the help of Mrs. DonVito, Ms. Doyle, and Mr. Daly I successfully completed my new product. So, if I had the chance, I would have created a different and better product at the beginning of my project and put more effort into planning it and making it successful. There are many things I wish I could have done differently but these were the biggest differences that would have resulted in a better Senior Project.
My good friend said that, “counseling is a way to get rid of evil”. I didn’t quite understand what she meant by her statement, at the time, but now going through my counseling sessions, I get it. Her statement or quote means to let go of what is troubling something you, then, now, or in the past to be able to vent out to someone that is completely not bias or one sided. I guess maybe this not the right answer to the testimony that my friend said but I realize that counseling for me has been a way to vent and understand myself.
In the end, this class has really opened my eyes to everything that is out there to supplement my teaching and my students learning. I am extremely happy that this class did not teach me how to use Microsoft Office , but I do wish that we could have had the opportunity to work more with the material rather than merely reading about the material. The Multimodal Task definitely allowed us to configure a lesson using and working with technology, but if we had more time, I wish we could have done more than one task to accomplish such goals.
Helping people, whether it is through difficult times or to just achieve a goal, is one of the most rewarding of human experiences. However, with it being so rewarding, there is significant difficulty behind successfully helping someone. Luckily there are people that specialize in helping such as peer counsellors. Although helping does come naturally for some, certain things can be learnt to make one a better helper.
While I was nervous at first, the students warmed up to me and I felt comfortable. Going to a classroom every day is something I look forward to, and this experience put that into perspective a little more. I know teaching is just as challenging as rewarding, and I’m ready to take that on. I learned several classroom tips from my cooperating teacher. He was knowledgeable about the subjects, and I was able to take away ideas. These ideas, and tips will be used in my classroom. As for MoSEP standards, I consider my strengths; Standard #2 Student Learning, Growth and Development, Standard #5 Positive Classroom Environment, Standard #6 Effective Communication, and Standard #8 Professionalism. I figured these as my strengths, because they are what I focused on while in the classroom. I think these standards are important to students’ learning, and they are something that I didn’t have trouble accomplishing. While I learned a tremendous amount of knowledge through this experience, I still have a lot to learn. I need improvement in lesson planning. Lesson planning is a big portion of teaching, and it’s something that you’ll never stop doing. I also need to learn how to deal with parents. Doing Junior Achievement I didn’t have to interact with parents, so that’s something that I’ll need to come in contact with at some point. I would like to improve in teaching techniques. I would like to grow in
After this project I would seriously consider not doing any projects in my classroom. But I need to remember this is only one experience (and my first one at that.) Not all projects need to go this way. Having had this experience can help me make sure I don’t have similar ones in my classroom.
The week was a chaotic and short week. Monday was a great day. My mentor was out for the first half of the day and I was in charge of the classroom. The students tried to push their limits but I explained that we are going to work. Tuesday was a crazy mess due to Valentine’s Day excitement. On Wednesday, it was much calmer and the first learning experience was implemented. The goals that were created last week are still in effect.
The purpose of this class these were teach students the best way to do research online, teach them basic coding/computer programming, and problem-solving techniques for technical problems in order to improve and increase the students' skills using computers and get the most out of the available technology in the school. I learned how to use the school database to find reliable sources, including some primary sources for research. The librarian of our school came into our class and gave as walkthrough of how to access the school database as well as the various topics that existed in the database. We also created a simple version of hangman after the teacher guided us through a lesson of basic coding. She then sent us on our own to make whatever game we had the skills to make. In technology I programmed a robot to fight other robots in these technology-oriented classes using Lego Mindstorms through the EV3 program. These classes prepared me for what was to come in high
