Weekly Reflective Journal #5 The week was a chaotic and short week. Monday was a great day. My mentor was out for the first half of the day and I was in charge of the classroom. The students tried to push their limits but I explained that we are going to work. Tuesday was a crazy mess due to Valentine’s Day excitement. On Wednesday, it was much calmer and the first learning experience was implemented. The goals that were created last week are still in effect. Literacy has been a bit of a rollercoaster this past week. Monday the students enjoyed participating in the scholastic Let’s Find Out paper. I was even amazed by one student’s ingenuity. The paper had a maze on the back. The students had to help the baby musk ox travel to its mother at the bottom of the paper. One student drew a line down the side and said “done”. I asked him why he did it that way. He replied, “it was the fastest way to get the baby to its mom”. In mathematics, the students were engaged in the activities. At my table the students worked in partners with a fill two ten frames activity. The students enjoyed this activity and quickly filled up their ten frames. I felt like it was a rollercoaster if I am honest. My students knew so much about Presidents. I also felt that after teaching the first learning experience that I over-prepared for the first learning experience. The following learning experiences have been modified accordingly given this reflection. I tried fitting it all in with the first group. However, that is unreasonable. Time did not allow for all that I had planned. Therefore, I made accommodations so that the learning was not rushed. I also felt that my pre-assessment took time away from the lesson. While the reading assessment will be different for all students I learned that I must be attentive to the student and what they say, also I learned that even if the student gets frustrated I should not aid in the reading that is in front of them. Instruction for the students should be clear and precise; I believe that every student should have their own Vocabulary Dictionaries in the classroom. 1. First, in order to prevent a crisis situation, it is very important to know your triggers and arousal patterns. I came to know how to maintain control when someone is triggered and how to reduce arousal patterns. This is course provide me with great knowledge that will help me during a crisis. I also came to know how attitudes, assumptions, and beliefs may influence the worker’s response.
On page 4, we read “Deep-sea Treasure Hunters” by Ramona Rivera. Students once again participated in reading, except one = student (Kristina) who claimed she did not like to read aloud. However, she did answer a few questions. I had students underline what they thought the central idea and supporting details of the story were. Afterwards, they shared their answers and explained why they choose certain sentences/phrases to underline as each. We also filled out the chart on the page
On Tuesday, we all shared titles of our favorite books and some kindergartners also brought their favorite books to share and showed us their favorite page from those books and explained why it was their favorite page. Children learned about the sight words during this session. They decorated their Literacy bags, which they will start bringing to home from next week to practice and share the things they have learned during Literacy classes.

13. Preventing Boredom and filling “free” time: To prevent students from becoming sidetracked and bored, I know it is important to have a continuous flow of activities. To ensure this, I plan all of my lessons with extra activities for unexpected “free” time. These efforts will help ensure that class time is used wisely for furthering education. I feel that the busier I keep my students the less likely they will have time for inappropriate behavior.
My personal philosophy of classroom management focuses on creating an environment where children feel safe and where they feel like they belong. I will create this environment for my fourth grade class through making my expectations of the students clear while developing an engaging lesson plan and personable interactions with my students. I developed my philosophy from studying different theorists and based my philosophy on the theories of Glasser and Kounin. Glasser believed that the teacher’s roll in the classroom is that of a leader rather than a boss. He believed that students should be given power in the classroom and that the teacher should share it with the students. I will use his ‘7 caring habits’ specifically supporting and respecting to help my classroom feel safe and welcoming to my students. Meeting the individual needs of my students will be the focus of my classroom management routine. I will meet individual needs by promoting self management and self efficacy in my students by creating an environment that that has predictable and consistent daily routines while focusing on my student’s successes (Shindler, 2010). Having a predictable routine will encourage a success oriented environment and will reduce anxiety and help towards creating positive self efficacy in each of my students (Shindler, 2010). In Glasser’s Choice Theory he talks about focusing on the present and not bringing up the past (Glasser, 2010). Therefore, I will focus my classroom on being goal driven and will help each student obtain their goals. Thus, helping my students have positive self efficacy. After reflecting on the weekly appointment sheet and comparing it to my last couple of weeks, I found that most things stayed constant, but their are some differences. My work schedule and class times are the same, but my actual plans for study time are not. I planned to study every day after the school day, but I did not stick to it fully. Additionally, the time I set aside for the weekends for reflection on course materials became more sporadic. Especially with the recent holiday, I did not study as much time as I should have. Nonetheless, that does not mean I can not improve. I tend to get not so much overwhelmed, but I unknowingly distract myself with other activities.
I can use this information in my classroom by having children that have a hard time expressing themselves use art as a way to express themselves. Not only if they have a hard time expressing themselves, but if they seem to be having a bad day and need time to themselves coloring utensils and paper can be giving to them to help calm them. Also these articles taught me what art really means. I thought of art as just a way to express yourself and be creative. The Fransisco Goya article taught me art is form and content. I can use this information to help teach my students creativity, confidence, problem solving, perseverance, focus, how to work with others, how to handle criticism and dedication.
Over the last seven weeks of this course, I have activated prior knowledge, learned new information, shared concerns, and strategies with my colleagues. This class affirmed knowledge gained both from my undergraduate studies as well as additional research I have independently completed on literacy.
Other excellent ways to include active learning into classrooms is through group work, various forms of writing activities, and even educational games (Davis, n.d.). Group work is a productive way to give every student the chance to speak and share their ideas. A convenient way to include this in lessons would be to give each group their own topic. Have them read the material, answer questions and find information in which later they can share and teach to the rest of the class.
