My personal philosophy of classroom management focuses on creating an environment where children feel safe and where they feel like they belong. I will create this environment for my fourth grade class through making my expectations of the students clear while developing an engaging lesson plan and personable interactions with my students. I developed my philosophy from studying different theorists and based my philosophy on the theories of Glasser and Kounin. Glasser believed that the teacher’s roll in the classroom is that of a leader rather than a boss. He believed that students should be given power in the classroom and that the teacher should share it with the students. I will use his ‘7 caring habits’ specifically supporting and respecting to help my classroom feel safe and welcoming to my students. Meeting the individual needs of my students will be the focus of my classroom management routine. I will meet individual needs by promoting self management and self efficacy in my students by creating an environment that that has predictable and consistent daily routines while focusing on my student’s successes (Shindler, 2010). Having a predictable routine will encourage a success oriented environment and will reduce anxiety and help towards creating positive self efficacy in each of my students (Shindler, 2010). In Glasser’s Choice Theory he talks about focusing on the present and not bringing up the past (Glasser, 2010). Classroom management is a necessary component for teachers to appreciate and apply to positively manage and adjust behavior within the learning environment. It is important that teachers develop a sound perceptive of significant theories that will result in enhanced teaching and practices within the class (Lyons, Ford & Slee, 2014). Goal Centred Theory, Cognitive Behavioural Theory and Assertive Discipline Theory are three prominent management theories that will endure analysis. Therefore, consolidating the main elements that underpin the theories will assist in developing positive practices of classroom management.
In my twelve years of teaching experience, one thing that most of my colleagues have struggled with at some point in their career has been classroom management. Classroom management is one many keys to instructional success. Unfortunately, many have left the teaching field due to lack of knowledge of classroom management best practices.
I believe that the best method of management behavior is democratic. Autocratic does not allow student to be involved in the rule and decision making of classroom rules and procedures. It also makes students feel subordinated to the teacher and uses vigorous discipline therefore, I do not agree with this method. A passive behavior management plan doesn’t give consequences for bad behavior and fails to enforce good behavior. Permissive style allows for a chaotic and insecure classroom due to the lack of respect and order. Therefore, I believe that a democratic management style is the most appropriate and efficient style of behavior management. This style gives opportunity for students to be involved in the classroom rules & decision making. Democratic style encourages mutual respect amongst teachers and students, and gives students freedom to express their opinion and thoughts. Teachers help guide students instead of dictate their behavior and actions. Students are allowed to question aspects of learning and dicipline. Students are encouraged to have their own beliefs where teachers will unconditional accept them regardless of their beliefs, opinions, and behaviors. Students are encouraged to work together along with the teacher to achieve academic and behavioral goals. There is no reliance on force to get compliance from students. Students are given the choice to obey or not to obey the rules and consequently receive predetermined consequences established by the teacher and students. Through exploring multiple learning theories and reflecting on my own teaching beliefs, I have developed my own theory of learning. As I developed my theory, I wanted to consider what it takes to be a highly effective teacher. An effective teacher must have mastery of instructional strategies, classroom management, classroom curriculum design, and use assessments as feedback (Laureate Education, 2010a). By using a variety of instructional strategies, teacher’s can meet the learning styles of all the students in the classroom. Effective classroom management can lead to students feeling safe and more willing to take risks. When a student feels comfortable to take risk, then learning will increase and the students’ confidence will grow. Classroom management also creates order in the environment, which will allow effective learning to occur. By understanding curriculum, the teacher can target skills and causes learning to take place. Teachers need to deliberately plan lessons around standards and specific goals based on curriculum and the school’s mission (Marzano, 2010). Assessments need to be use to guide instruction and used as a “method for improvement and mastery,” (Marzano, 2010). While determining my own theory of learning, I believe that I need to consider what effective teachers demonstrate in the classroom.

Although a thorough understanding of mathematics and the learning of mathematics are very important to a successful math classroom, one of the most important aspects that creates a good learning environment is classroom management. Without a classroom that is organized and disciplined, learning is close to impossible. This is why I believe that it is imperative that a teacher begins a classroom with a well thought out management plan. I think that this plan should just provide a base for the classroom, and should be structured around prevention, respect and consistency.
My teaching career has been spent learning how to provide appropriate support, guidance, patience, & understanding, as well as to enhance academic growth & success, for all students. My purpose as a teacher is to enrich and inspire the lives of young students with moderate/intensive needs by providing access to information instead of functioning as the primary source of information for students to flourish. My teaching methods will be to create an environment ripe with opportunities for discovery and exploration which will allow all students to learn at their own pace, generate questions and construct knowledge, while providing hands-on practice of skills in authentic situations as well as to make learning intriguing and meaningful to all students. Carefully planned and constructed learning environment will also allow the teacher more time to meet the individual needs of each student. Another important factor to a well-prepared learning environment is to facilitate learning, and providing students with balance and consistency (2004). Young students require a balance between various classroom dimensions, including activities guided by the teacher and independent work, quiet work and active work, gross motor and fine motor activities, and open and closed aspects to the curriculum and classroom materials (2004). Consistency is also a required condition for learner success. Schedules (daily and weekly), the enforcement of classroom rules, and student expectations should not be in flux but remain consistent. Classroom management, involving all the strategies used by teachers in order to provide order in the classroom, can be regarded as an essential for effective teaching and learning. According to Davis (1981), “basic classroom management is just plain good sense. Yet, it can be as personal as your private lifestyle” (p.79). One of the biggest challenge teachers face day in and day out is dealing with behavior of children and young pupils in classroom. Therefore, the classroom practice of individual teachers would be the key aspect of improving the behavior of pupils in schools (Hart, 2010). One of the significant attribute of promise to teaching, especially in classroom behavior management, is teacher’s sense of efficacy. According to Woolfolk-Hoy (2000), development of self-efficacy is essential for producing effective, committed and ardent teachers, Moreover, teachers who are trained to be more effective in meeting both academic and non-academic student needs create a positive and successful classroom environment for all students (Alvares, 2007). The importance of self-efficacy in behavior management has been highlighted by Martin, linfoot, and stephenson (1999) who proposed that teacher’ responses to misbehavior may be mediated by their beliefs about their ability to deal with behavior, as well as their beliefs about the causes of student misbehavior.
The job of a teacher is never easy but we have seen how cooperative discipline and enabling students to feel capable, connected and contributing can improve classroom management and maybe even our own moods. If we create an environment of mutual respect and give our students legitimate power of voice and choice in the classroom we will see positive results in improved student behavior and student achievement. Classroom management has the largest effect on student achievement, so students cannot learn in poorly managed classroom. Additionally, research has pointed out that the quality of teacher-student relationships is the main aspect of classroom management.(…2). Furthermore, when teachers set classroom management plan, the plan will give structure to everything from seating to lessons to grading to the relationship between students. This I Believe Philosophy statement will include my thoughts and beliefs about classroom management with comparison to other theorists’ models. The major theorists that will be mentioned are Barbara Coloroso, Linda Albert, and Lee & Marlene Canter. I highly agree with the Canter’s and Coloroso’s models of classroom management because it best fits my personality as an individual teacher. I believe that an affective classroom management plan is first practiced and then modeled for improvements. My ultimate goal for my Classroom Management Plan is to model self-discipline by teaching it through my daily actions so that students may be able to self-manage themselves accordingly.
My personal philosophy for managing my diverse second grade classroom, has been created through past experiences, various theorists, and personal observations. One of the theorists that contributed to my philosophy is William Glasser. He defined the teacher's role as being a leader to the students rather being a “boss”(Glasser 1990). Before anything, as the leader, I will implement reasonable rules at the start of the school year. Having set rules, routines, and consequences beforehand, will reduce the chances of not knowing how to handle a bad situation. I strongly believe that each child is different and capable of being successful. They need a safe, fun, and challenging environment in which to learn and mature socially, intellectually, physically, and emotionally. To be an effective second grade teacher, classroom management should be what establishes a good foundation for all the students. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in an atmosphere where there is trust.There are three elements that I believe important to make it work, (1) the teacher acting as a guide and not a boss, (2) allowing the students to create the assignements according to their interests, and (3) promoting respect for one another.
I believe Classroom Management is the main component in the educational setting. I believe if students are in a safe environment, then learning can take place. This doesn’t mean punishing behavior problems but rather a combination of setting the tone in a class, preventing behavior problems with interesting and engaging curriculums and effectively including all students in the classroom so that their needs are met. Having the right environment for all students to learn is my major goal of implementing good classroom management--without it the students would not be able to learn.
“A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, and touches a heart.” This quote is something I always remind myself before starting my day. Teaching is not only about teaching a new sight word, the states and capitals, or division. It is so much more than that. These minds that we are teaching need to know that we are touching their heart and that we want them to feel safe and loved when they step into our classroom.
