Starting with Swen, our final group leader for this course. Did an incredible job keeping everyone organized and on task. I have watched Swen, like a turtle peeking out of his shell in the beginning of this course. To be this strong public speaker and coordinator. In this term, Swen really picked up on everything that he was having struggles with. Organization, cooperation and leadership skills all greatly improved. He was able to keep everyone in their Facebook group chat, on topic for group meetings. By being cooperative with each member, even though we were all stressed out because of the essays due. Swen took the higher rout and forced us as a group to put that on the back burner for the time being. In the second part of term 5, Swen was incredible speaking in front of the class. Over the last few classes I noticed that I took the role of leader, overstepping my boundaries and almost becoming bossy towards other members of my group. I do not deny this, but I will not deny putting my foot down to make sure the group was on the right track. I took on the role of leader-as-coach because I came up and showed people how things should be done. I never ordered anyone around. That I made sure of, because Swen was leader, and took on the more of the non-verbal communication between the group that kept everyone happy. With such high expectations there was never a moment where he didn 't need to be playing peace keeper. Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. I had many issues doing this throughout my project because I am only one person and I can’t be everywhere at once. Thusly made being a leader a drudgery. Conclusion Ultimately I did a much better job of implementing course material into my approach to leading the project team. Though no formal leadership role was established, I ended up becoming the “point-man.” Instead of viewing this reality as a burden (as I have been) I should make the most of the opportunity to better myself and potentially others. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, I need to make sure that I am meeting and exceeding the demands that the group places on itself and demonstrate that I am motivated.
Group therapy is considered one of the most resourceful forms of therapy. The benefits to group therapy can be both cost-effective and a great means of support (Corey, Corey & Corey, 2014). The process of experiencing ideas and viewpoints expressed by your peers allows group members to become more susceptible to the counseling procedure. Group counseling also helps individuals to feel a sense of belonging due to similar situations and experiences shared by the group. The sense of support from group members can be an excellent means towards developing long-lasting relationships and developing communication skills needed to move forward during the counseling phase. In this paper, I will discuss my experiences throughout the group-counseling phase.
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
Each individual is categorized into a group from the day they were conceived. According to Kozier et al (2010) a group is “two are more people who have shared need and goals, who taken each other in account in their and who, thus, are held together and set apart from others by virtue of their interaction” (p. 400). The communicate that takes place between members of the group is group dynamic (Kozier et al, 2010). Motivation for participation and similarity of other group members and the goals of the group will affect the group dynamic (Kozier et al, 2010). The type of group that was created was a task group and Kozier et al (2010) stated that “the focus for such group is completion of a specific task, and the format is defined at the outset by the leader or members” (p.400). The purpose of the group was to choose a community health care organization, and then presents the information to the class. To increase the student understandings of what a community health organization is; to demonstrate understanding of community based health care nursing practice. To provided information on the different aspects of the community health organization and to identify various roles of nurses within the community health organization. In order for a group to be effective, three functions are required. It must maintain a degree of group unity, it needs to develop and modified its structure to improve its effectiveness and it must accomplish its goals (Kozier et al, 2010).
Based on the small group that I joined in communication class, I will talk about what is working well and what is getting in the way in our group. Then I will discuss about what I can do to improve the group and the things about group project if there is a chance for a start over again. At last, I am also going to talk about what I think that I learned is an important lesson in this semester.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. Working in groups is challenging at times. Other times it is very rewarding. We are so focused on life that we do not take time to reflect on things as much as we should. Being in a Groups class has opened my eyes to a whole new world. I have begun to question, explore, and even understand how things work. I even get how they work sometimes. Being a leader for in almost any given situation has been an innate quality that I have possessed for as long as I can remember. I have always found myself nominating myself for leadership positions. My most recent and fulfilling leadership position would be my eleventh and twelfth grade school years when I held the position of Drum Major for Purnell Swett High School’s Marching Rams. Being in this position meant that I had to give up the spotlight of performance, turn my back to the crowd, and lead my fellow band members on and off of the field of competition, high school football games, and community parades. Over the course of these two years, I have learned many defining qualities about myself and have learned how to incorporate these newly learned and innate qualities to my everyday life. Throughout this two year experience the quality that I feel tested more than others, was the quality of patience. Often times before I held this position, I found myself becoming extremely impatient with individuals and situations when they would not go the way as planned or as smoothly as I had planned for them to go. This position taught me that not all situations are going to run smoothly and that we need to make the best of what we are presented with. It also taught me that not all individuals learn at the same pace, the same way, and at times do not handle individuals close to their own age giving instructions on how to complete a task. With this realization, I found myself trying to find methods of teaching that appealed to all individuals as well as found ways of not coming off as trying to force individuals to complete the tasks the way that I see fit.
The work community has several members, it is vital that these individuals act as a group, so that the common goal was achieved. This section describes the team, the team's importance, team building and why before-mentioned issues are important. This section also takes place through the cases and at the end of the self-evaluation.
In today’s society, the definition of leadership is ever-changing and is always being improved. As a leader, my mission is to treat everyone equally and give them the respect they deserve. This semester was very challenging, but my leadership skills have improved. As a leader, my roles play a significant part in the lives of my constituents. Having had various leadership roles throughout my student career, I think that being committed to the task at hand is essential in order for everyone to be on the same page and working toward the same goal. During my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to student teach with my vocal teacher in the middle school and freshman girls’ choirs. After two months into the year, she had to leave for personal reasons, and it was a really hard adjustment for all the students in the choirs. In being the student teacher for 2 of those choirs, this was especially difficult because the kids didn’t like the change. The substitute teacher didn’t quite measure up to the standards that were already set, so it was easy for discouragement and negativity to set in....
I was really impressed on how well organized Alexia Hall was with the class she seem to know where she wanted to the class to be at the end of the semester. We were past out with the class policies and a syllabus of what we were going to do the whole semester. I thought this was very convenient so that there was no mixed signals in the group.
I’ve learned so much through this course. This course helped me learn behavior and people around me. Now I can see how it is hard for the people to live with their disorders. The society treats those people like outcasts and most of them even laugh at their disorder. Every behavior can be explained by psychology.
