In today’s society, the definition of leadership is ever-changing and is always being improved. As a leader, my mission is to treat everyone equally and give them the respect they deserve. This semester was very challenging, but my leadership skills have improved. As a leader, my roles play a significant part in the lives of my constituents. I am eager to say, but I enjoyed every moment of my volunteer experience as a prospective Certified Student Leader (C.S.L). Taking the course, introduction to leadership was not a mistake, but a way for me to grow and mature as a leader. I must admit that I am staring to see the world differently, rather than to my own benefit. Considering this, I was able to grow with the help of my followers, mentors, …show more content…
I have learned from my mistakes and I have also learned how to approach and handle situations differently. I would agree that the C.S.L. program has mold me and shaped me to become a better leader for the future. There is nothing that I would do differently or change about my experience. I have met new friends and mentors based on the mission and standards that I have set as an effective leader. According to Brown, “an effective leader should produce the potential for dramatic change, but an ineffective leader can also create chaos and even failure” (Brown 2006). Therefore, as an effective leader, one has to have a vision and goal setting in mind. A team depends on its leader to tell them where, why, and how they are going to accomplish their goals and challenges. Throughout the summer 2016 semester, I had the opportunity of volunteering for several organizations, including Caps of Love Charity, St. Paul A.M.E Church, and the Alzheimer’s Association. As of today, I try to keep in touch with the students and friends that I met during my volunteer experience and we keep each other motivated throughout the week via telephone. I was also able to incorporate the elements of a mindful leader throughout my C.S.L experience. As a mindful leader, I have embodied the “leadership presence by cultivating focus, clarity, …show more content…
I have become more focus on the individuals that I met during my experience, rather than focusing on myself. I have also encouraged and challenged others to do things that they have never thought of doing before I met them. Considering this, I was also able to incorporate the qualities of a transformational leader, which “is a leadership style defined by the relationships between the leaders and the followers and the results they are able to achieve together to meet organizational goals” (Thomson MD, Rawson and Slade PhD 2016, 592).Therefore, one would agree that there is “a positive relationship between transformational leadership and followers ' individual-level creativity primarily due to the creativity-enhancing behaviors displayed by this leadership” (Gumusluoglu and llsev 2009, 461). Thus, as a transformational leader I am also “able to inspire subordinates by connecting with them emotionally, which provides the opportunity to share a vision. The emotional connection with the subordinate does not end with inspiration” (Vito, Higgins and Denney 2014). Considering this, “a transformational leader uses this connection to serve as a mentor or developer demonstrating to the subordinate a focus on them (i.e. individual consideration). The transformational leader encourages the intellectual stimulation of their subordinates. In
There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself. Great followership is a reflection of great leadership. In this, the follower is just as important as the leader in the relationship. Many great leaders have asserted that a leader with even a modicum of understanding of what drives their subordinates can take their organization to previously undreamt-of heights in creativity and productivity. Collins does not disabuse us of this notion, he does however add that the follower is indispensable agent in this interplay between leader and follower.
Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. Rather, this is someone that has a true connection with their peers, and has unmatched passion for what they do. With this, I can confidently say that since seventh grade, as a young adult, I have been shaped into an individual that fits these traits. Since that time, I have been involved in student government,
It is one thing to have the knowledge of “the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive”. What I am persistent to do with that knowledge is what is important. My biggest take away is that I need to get on the balcony. By being on the balcony I can see that is it really the bold guy with the dance moves who starts the party, not the DJ. Silly to me that I never realized that is where I needed to be, that is where people could find me in a real life party. A year from now I hope that is still where I will be, looking for new data and learning more about myself in new circumstances. There will always be more to learn, although every once in a while I will have to intervene in situations that will make me uncomfortable. To carry on improving on the skills I picked up during the course of this class, it will be crucial for me to reevaluate the goals I set for myself. I plan to reset them all and provide myself with a timeline to achieve the goals. KU offers a minor in leadership studies and this classes is the foundation for all of those leadership classes to come. This class will be impossible to forget as I move forward in complete my minor. I will be using what I have learned in this class still three years from, it is kind of
His or her actions can inspire others. The second component is Inspiration and Vision; this element assists the leader to look into the future. They work hard to ensure goals and dreams become a reality. Transformational leaders stay committed to the vision/goal in stressful times. “They set standards and instill others with optimism, a sense of meaning, and commitment to a dream, goal, or cause.” (Marshall & Broome, 2017). The third component is Intellectual stimulation. A leader with Intellectual Stimulation keeps probing and challenges the existing knowledge or ways various task is carried out. They challenge the status quo to make room for new and creative ideas to be innovative. The final component is Individual Consideration, which is an essential element for a transformational leader and a successful leader as a whole. They are servants who serve with humility, and according to Marshall & Broome (2017), they look beyond their self or personal goals. They are more invested in the organizational goals and
SLC has introduced a new perspective on a wide variety of topics. The recurring theme of relational leadership allowed me to critically analyze myself and the extent of which I personally live up to its intended benefits. Perhaps the biggest realization for me throughout the course of the semester was my strength in leading ethically but my inability to diversify. As the past leader of a religious youth group, I believe that I have done well in staying true to ethical leadership, however I have also seen how differences in belief and culture can make individuals feel, especially if they are an odd one out.

Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership, not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency. All in all, this book highlights strategies for us all to be better in our lives and our everyday interactions.
For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. Until fairly recently, I had never truly thought about what it means to be a good leader and just took it as a compliment. Leadership is an intangible concept which cannot be properly outlined in a dictionary, but one which must be formed and explained only through one’s own philosophies and experiences.

I have had to opportunity to be Panguitch High School’s Class President of 2017 for the past two years. In this journey I have transformed from a caterpillar follower to a leading butterfly, but I have also learned the habit of followers. I often wonder what people would take away from leadership opportunities. Today this world has many followers and not enough leaders. My class is composed of many potential leaders that never dared to step out of their comfort zone to follow their “once upon time” dream of being a leader.
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Transformational leaders develop well connected relationships with their staff. When you have close relationships with your staff and get to know them this allows you insight to how they learn and how they like to be motivated. You can tailor the motivation you provide to them as an individual to be specific to something that may drive them. Developing a personalized approach to deal with everyone will help better understand each member of my staff and identify what they may need from me as a leader. I will also have better insight into what motivates them
Leadership is not a position or a title it is action and example. In this Reflection, I will write about course topic, Leadership examples and me as a leadership. In course topic, I turn to what was the most interesting topic to me, which topic I find it difficult and which topic I find it useful for the future. In the Leadership examples, I turn to the most interesting thing I learned about a famous leader. The most important thing that great leaders all have in common, and I describe one famous leader’s approach to leading. In me as a leadership, I turn to what did I learn about being a leader from doing the classroom activities. What I will do is I was given a job as an office manager after graduating and if I would like
Over the years, I learned many valuable lessons about leadership. I learned that leadership is not about rank, position or title. Leadership is about action and interaction. Leadership is about doing what’s right, not what’s popular. Leadership is about doing what’s right, not what’s expedient.
It is urgent that teachers recognize the positive leadership traits from students and the correct the negative traits. David K. Ferguson from Andrews University said, “The problem for most is that if we wait to teach leadership lessons until ignorance and bad habits have calcified, we make implausible deconstruction a requirement, even if those truths are quickly understood and desired.” (Ferguson). Teachers cannot wait any longer, the time to start educating the students on good, positive leadership is now. As leadership studies are continuously neglected, there is more time for negative leadership traits and bad habits to be formed. There is a “…sense of urgency and commitment is palpable” (Snook). Time cannot be wasted, the youth of the United States need to learn leadership skills before it is too
