A leader is an individual who leads the team with all respect and care, never lets a member of the team to stay behind when all others are moving forward. For instance, during my under graduation days back in India, we were assigned a project to be completed within a span of 25 days. We were a group of 6 individuals, with mutual consent we opted one of our friend to lead the team. The work to be completed was distributed equally among all the members of the team. When one of the individual experienced the difficulty to complete the work, the leader of the team stood ahead and helped him complete his job by motivating him all the time. When the problem was stated to the upper management after some days, the senior executives and the manager collected more information about the individual who is always late to work, the reason behind it and so on. Later, they discovered that the individual was going through a lot of stress, so they decided to put the individual in a different task which requires lesser effort. Furthermore, after a couple of days working in a different department, the individual was totally relived. Now a days, looking at the employment rate and the quality of individuals present in this world, only fewer organizations care about the individuals who face problems at the workplace. Most of the companies prefer not to hold such individuals. For instance, back in India, during my under graduation days, I met with an accident while travelling to school in my motorcycle. There were many audiences present when the accident took place. It was a clear mistake of the other person who hit my motor cycle from the left side, as overtaking from left is prohibited. When the police arrived at the accident place, no one was ready to give an evidence, although they had seen it. Bystanders in organization may affect the working, as they are not interested in the job being assigned or done. When such individuals exist, it may also affect others in the group. The organization has to take corrective decisions in order for them to get involved in the work. Take away 3: Clearly support the leaders or oppose (PARTICIPANTS) Participants are the individuals who have a clear idea as to what is going on in the organization and team. They are the ones, who necessarily at all times may not agree with what the leaders say. For instance, this again relates to the days of my under graduation. When I was leading a team consisting of five members, one of the individual in the team, most of the times, used to never agree with all the decisions I used to make. right. These are the individuals who are committed towards the job assigned to them. They always follow the right path and help a team achieve its goal. Furthermore, they have a clear idea and either oppose or agree with the leader. They are the individuals whom organization strive to hire. To recapitulate, in order for a leader to exist, a follower must be present in one of the above stated forms.
Introduction According to the Oxford Dictionary, a leader is defined as “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2013). Though there is a definition for what a leader is, people still have different ideas about what a leader should be and how he or she should act. There has never been a concrete idea of what a leader is; the only thing we know is that this person is the one in charge of the unit. We look at characteristics of those people we see as leaders and use those attributes to compare other people to see if they are able to be as good as, or even better than, those aforementioned leaders. We have to keep in mind that in different situations, leaders must do different tasks which indicates the need for different qualities.
What is a leader? A leader is someone who takes command and leads an organization or group to success. Anyone can be a leader but in order to become a great leader you have to have to possess certain characteristics. I will be using Odysseus from the Odyssey isas an example of a leader who has suitable characteristics. Leadership is defined as a process by which an individual influences others to obtain goals. There are three aspects that should be addressed when explaining leadership. One aspect is that leadership is a social influence process; leadership could not exist without a leader and one or more followers. Another leadership aspect is compliance; all of the leader’s directions must be complied with voluntarily. Compliance is what separates leadership from other influence-based formal authority. Finally, leadership results in the followers’ behavior, that is purposeful and goal-directed which must be in some organized setting (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009).
Over the course of my professional career in different organizations in the past three years, I have worked under many managers. This has been a learning curve for me to understand the different managing styles and leadership characteristics of people. One of the managers whom I worked under, was the lead in a government project which also happened to be my last project before I took a break for continuing my studies, is a person I admire till date. I learned several life lessons in addition to the technical subject associated with the industry. This paper demonstrates the leadership styles exhibited by my manager with suitable examples.
Leaders are the inspiration and directors of action and possess the art of motivating a group of people towards a common goal. A leader should be able to make decisions, encourage others, guide others, take initiative and be a mediator and arbitrator.
Successful leaders must be skilled in asking their team members questions that will provide useful answers. Questions are essential in keeping a project on track, and are used to help identify any issues or constraints that could affect the outcome of the project. If a leader fails to ask questions they will not know if the project faces any challenges. If the project is facing a challenge, the number one question to ask is “Can we fix it” (Pink, 2010, para. 4). Leadership and management will be unable to help resolve issues if they don’t that they exist. The only way to know if their project is facing any challenges is simply by asking the right questions.
