Big Five Personality Model According to Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator or MBTI, the Big Five Model portrays five different dimensions within the human personality. These dimensions include conscientiousness, emotional stability, extraversion, openness to experience, and agreeableness. Mrs. Barra appears to score high on all five dimensions. A few examples that apply to Barra's personality trait assumptions include her role as CEO during a major General Motors (GM) scandal, her management tactics regarding culture change, her lifetime growth within the company, her GM innovative business plan, and Barra's overall personality peer review. From the above test I undertook, it is evident that I incline more to being an extrovert than an introvert. Even though I strongly disagree with the fact that my emotional intelligence is low, as per the results, I think the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test was unbiased and precise. This can be proven from my personality class, which is EFNJ.
The four personality preference ISTF – Introvert, Sensing, Thinking and Judging, joined together to form the person that I am. After the completion of the Meyers-Briggs Personality test, I understand how I am and how I can better relate to other personalities. Being willing to change and adapt to my strengths will help me grow as a leader.
The Myers-Briggs profile was based on the test developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers (“The History of the MTBI assessment”, 2017). The ability to be self-aware, identify specific personality traits, and assess personal strengths and weaknesses are powerful tools for lifelong personal and professional success. One of the most popular and trusted personality assessment tools utilized today is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (CPP, 2016). According to Meyers-Briggs Personality test my personality type is ESFJ also known as “The Caregiver.” An ESFJ is one of 13 personality types identified through the Myers-Briggs assessment tool (HumanmetricsInc, 2016). This assignment will identify the different aspects of my personality and how they work together. It will also evaluate strengths, weaknesses and organizational behaviors in an effort to maximize professional performance.
The Myers and Briggs Analysis is a series of questions that when answered are examined and grouped together in order to determine the personalities of those taking this test. This particular test can result in sixteen different outcomes or types of personalities, which is determined by four different categories that judge if you are introverted or extroverted, use your senses or your intuition, your choice to think or use your feelings, and finally if you are judgmental or perceptive. These series of questions are designed to judge our personalities and help us to determine which career pathways we will be most suited for based on our personality traits and abilities to work well with others, which is important for our future decisions.
The bases of this paper will be based on the results that I had obtained when I took the Myers-Briggs personality test. The results that I had obtained was that I was determined to be an ENFJ. I will go into depth about letter and how each represents that a specific aspect of my personality. The results that I had received were not what I had expected, but the more I read about the trait the more I realized how it suited me. I will also talk about the information that I had found useful from the book, Type Talk at Work: How the 16 Personalities Types Determine Your Success on the Job by Otto Kroeger, which gave me insight on how to interact with other personality types especially in the work environment. The information that I absorbed from the personality test and from the book will go into use in my personal and work life so that both environments will be cohesive and peaceful.
Barra is known for her preserving attitude, which she keep through GM’s entire bankruptcy. Although she was not the CEO at that time, she had worked there for several years. According to Steven Snyder when Barra took over she “immediately set to work, rationalizing the product line, improving quality and efficiency, and better aligning the product with customer needs” (2014). Barra says, “It is truly amazing how empowering it can be when a leader treats a worker as a capable and well-intentioned human being, instead of a number on the assembly line” (2009). She also feels a leader should never stop learning, which she has continued to do throughout her career.
The reason that I choose the “Big Five” personality traits, as the concept that I would research is because my educational background is in psychology. When I was an undergraduate student, I took courses in personality as well as courses in psychological testing and assessments, and the personality tests were my favourite out of all the tests that we were taught to administer. I found the results to be especially interesting and I thought it would be interesting to see how psychological concepts can be applied to organizations and the workplace.
Throughout the beginning of this semester I have looked at how individuals behave within business organizations. Through various exercises and results, I have found a number of patterns within my behavior and interests. I have become aware what interests me, and a number of skills/abilities I was oblivious I had. This reflection and in class exercises has allowed me to expand my skills, abilities, and behaviors, well fitting them into prospective future employment.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) has recognized my profile as Introvert, Intuitive, Thinking and Judgment (INTJ). As an introvert, I can get nervous among other people. It does not pose a problem for an individual. On the other hand, in order to be an effective leader, it is important for me to keep a profound communicational relationship with my subordinates. Without proper communication skills, it is not possible to establish a functional relationship with my subordinates. This may jeopardize the success of any activity that we are involved in. The introvert part is perhaps the major barrier which may keep me away from being an effective leader.
The Big Five Theory is a useful tool to create a personality profile for a particular individual. By analysing a person using The Big Five Traits of extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness and neuroticism one can determine an individual’s basic personality profile.
The five-factor model includes five broad domains or dimensions of personality that are used to describe human personality. The five factors are openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. While these five traits should be sufficient on their own to describe all facets of a personality, there also should be no correlation between the main factors. The Five Factor Model is now perhaps the most widely use trait theory of personality and has achieved the closest thing to a consensus in personality research. The advantage of this theory is that there have been multiple research studies conducted on this theory. Results suggest that this theory is effective in describing and determining personality. However, this theory is very categorical and does not allow for much flexibility. It also looks at the person personality at that time and now how it developed.
The second major theory is called the trait or five-factor model. Often referred to as the "Big 5". The five personality traits described by the theory are extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness and neuroticism. Beneath each proposed global factor, a number of correlated and more specific primary factors are claimed. One strength of the trait perspectives is their ability to categorize observable behaviors. In other words, observing the behaviors of an individual over time and in varying circumstances provides evidence for the personality traits categorized in trait theories. The Big Five is the most widely accepted and used model of personality. The model consists of broad dimensions of personality traits. These dimensions are: Openness to Experience/Intellect, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. Upon completion of the Big Five Personality test, my results were somewhat surprising to me. Overall, I scored on the low end for Openness to Experience/Intellect, Extraversion and Neuroticism dimensions and on the high end for Conscientiousness and Agreeableness dimensions.
