Why did you choose this concept to research? The “Big Five” personality traits and the tests that show you what where on the scale of each of the five traits you fit are concepts that were introduce to me actually in high school. And it was interesting to see how I have changed in terms of the five traits from the first time I took the test to most recently when I did the test again. The reason that I choose the “Big Five” personality traits, as the concept that I would research is because my educational background is in psychology. When I was an undergraduate student, I took courses in personality as well as courses in psychological testing and assessments, and the personality tests were my favourite out of all the tests that we were taught to administer. I found the results to be especially interesting and I thought it would be interesting to see how psychological concepts can be applied to organizations and the workplace.
How did practitioners/researchers define the concept beyond the definition provided by the textbook? The traits that comprise the “Big Five” personality traits are as follows: neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, extroversion, and agreeableness. All five traits

For instance when looking at job satisfaction a person high in neuroticism is more likely to be less satisfied in their job (Judge, Heller & Mount, 2002). Actually they would probably be unhappy in most areas of their life as the trait if neuroticism often leads to people who are highly neurotic viewing everything in a negative. Another definition by other researcher is that neuroticism is actually a general way of reacting to any situation (Neal, Yeo, Koy & Xiao, 2012). This obviously refers to how highly neurotic people tend to be very suspicious and paranoid of everything and everyone compare to those who core low on
These different traits of personality have an impact on each individuals’ lives and also how they behave. For instance, according to the text, “The neurotic person might be anxious a lot, but this might protect her from being a knucklehead who chases tornadoes.” (Twenge & Campbell, 2016) Each trait can have a negative effect or a positive effect. Personality can be shaped by genetics and the environment.
After Allport, came along two psychologists, Raymond Cattell and Hans Eysenck, who each formulated their own theories regarding traits. Their theories have been the subjects of considerable research in the world of psychology. Cattell seemed to focus on far too many traits, while Eysenck seemed to focus on too few. As a result, psychologists have combined the two theories to make one satisfactory theory (Cherry), called “The Big Five Factors” (Myers). They are: conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness, and extraversion. These five factors merge to create the human personality (Cherry). Where people fall into these factors s...
“The Five Factor Model provides a compelling framework for building personality measures that seek to represent the domain of individual terms broadly and systematically” (Briggs, 1989 as cited in McAdams. DP, 1992, p. 332). The FFM consists of five factors (The ‘Big Five’). They are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. When measured individuals can range from extremes on each of these traits.
Personality is defined as a person's differences to another in regards to their patterns of behavior, thinking, and emotional responses (American Psychological Association). The Big Five Personality Traits are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism, or OCEAN for short. Openness is essentially correlated to exploring new things. The people that have high levels of this trait are generally more apt to do things like try different types of food, be more creative, and have the ability to tackle challenging problems. People who are low on this trait generally have a dislike for change, tend to not enjoy trying new things, and are generally more traditional in a sense..
According to Barrick and Mount (2005), one of the benefits of utilizing personality tests in the selection process is that it is helpful in predicting work behaviors. The benefit of measuring the Big Five Personality traits is that it aids in measuring specific job performance measures. These measures include motivation, interpersonal interaction, and the ability to influence others (as cited in Barrick, & Mount, 2005). Additionally, personality tests have the ability to predict various factors related to career success (Barrick, & Mount, 2005).
These scales are commonly alternatively represented by the OCEAN acronym Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion/Introversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. The Big Five structure captures, at a broad level of abstraction, commonalities among most of the existing systems of personality description, and provides an integrative descriptive model for personality research. (Oliver& Sanjay 1999)
five factor theory is a fairly recent proposal and has its basis in earlier work,
Neuroticism can be describing as a person who has the tendency to experience a negative emotion, fear, sadness, anxiety, guilt and shame. People experience this type of emotion sometimes but others can be more prone to it. This trait has been said to be more of an alarm system because people experience the negative as a sign that something may have went wrong. Someone that scores low is more likely to brush the misfortune off and move on. The score indicates that I can experience a negative emotion and that I would feel any type of sadness, worry, anger and guilt as an average person. I am not reactive or resistance to any stress of
The Big Five Theory is a useful tool to create a personality profile for a particular individual. By analysing a person using The Big Five Traits of extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness and neuroticism one can determine an individual’s basic personality profile.
In the vast and detailed world of psychology, there are a variety of different tests you can participate in. For example, you can participate in aptitude, verbal or numerical reasoning, and psychometric tests. These tests assess on a variety of different situations such as: behaviors, abilities and intelligence. Personality tests, a common and favored test, measure things such as: behavioral style, opinions, motivators, personal values and career interests. Most often, people complain or disagree with the score of some areas on their personality test; however, there are no right or wrong answers. After completing this personality test and reviewing the results, I found that the overall scoring accurately described me in most areas. The Big Five Personality test scores in five different areas involving openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.
Personality is massive part of an individual’s identity. Our personalities dictate our patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. An individual’s personality exposes them to predispositions and habits that influence their actions and lives. Early on, personality assessments consisted of physical features ranging from head shape and facial characteristics to body type. In today’s world, personality assessments are mainly based around traits. Traits are simply descriptions of one’s habitual patterns of behavior, thought and emotion. The most popular personality assessment is the Five-Factor Model, also known as The Big Five. This model allows us to describe people based on the five main traits/dimensions. These traits are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. Each of these five traits measures a different aspect of one’s personality. Extraversion is based on one’s level of engagement with the world,
The five-factor model includes five broad domains or dimensions of personality that are used to describe human personality. The five factors are openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. While these five traits should be sufficient on their own to describe all facets of a personality, there also should be no correlation between the main factors. The Five Factor Model is now perhaps the most widely use trait theory of personality and has achieved the closest thing to a consensus in personality research. The advantage of this theory is that there have been multiple research studies conducted on this theory. Results suggest that this theory is effective in describing and determining personality. However, this theory is very categorical and does not allow for much flexibility. It also looks at the person personality at that time and now how it developed.
The second major theory is called the trait or five-factor model. Often referred to as the "Big 5". The five personality traits described by the theory are extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness and neuroticism. Beneath each proposed global factor, a number of correlated and more specific primary factors are claimed. One strength of the trait perspectives is their ability to categorize observable behaviors. In other words, observing the behaviors of an individual over time and in varying circumstances provides evidence for the personality traits categorized in trait theories. Another strength is that trait theories use
This describes me somewhat although at times I feel the need not to be very social. I also never felt the need to be a social butterfly to the point of advancing my career. However, I am self-confident in public, and I can admit to being somewhat chatty at times. The score I had for Agreeableness was high, at 85%. This score basically says that im easy to get along with and that I have the ability to fit in and be liked by others.I have always just taken things in stride, and not sweat the small stuff. My score helps me to understand why I have such a laid-back view on the mistakes that I along with others make. I try not to let anything faze me. Finally, for Neuroticism, I scored 23%. This score means that I have high self-esteem and can handle stress well. I would say that this does represent my personality well. Honestly though I find myself displaying the other facet of this trait which is anxiety and guilt over something I failed at. Everyone experiences these feelings; However, some people are more prone and sensitive to them than others are. When something is wrong in the world around certain people, they might experience negative emotions because of whatever is going on in their life at that time. To conclude, personality traits and theories are essential in our daily lives. Because The methods can be used to describe
The Big Five is the most widely accepted and used model of personality. The model consists of broad dimensions of personality traits. These dimensions are: Openness to Experience/Intellect, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. Upon completion of the Big Five Personality test, my results were somewhat surprising to me. Overall, I scored on the low end for Openness to Experience/Intellect, Extraversion and Neuroticism dimensions and on the high end for Conscientiousness and Agreeableness dimensions.
