The famous quote “practice makes you perfect” was exactly how I felt during my mock interview assignment. It was a good exercise to practice and improve my interview skills, because I was able to monitor my actions during this process. My normal practice to prepare for an interview is by answering some usual interview questions in front of the mirror. This exercise was different, because I could give several attempts and review all my responses. I used the STAR approach to answer this behavioral-based interview question to give an authentic response. I started my answer by describing the situation and clearly stating our task, which we were doing. I focused on the action part by describing our specific actions during the task and my particular contribution in it. The result section was stated in the end of my answer to conclude the outcome of the task and emphasized on my contribution, because it was the most important section of the task and the result was based on it. I need to improve on my body language by smiling and nodding at the interview to draw his/ her attention to my answers. This will help me create positive attitude with the interviewer so that I can involve his attention to my answers and display enthusiasm. I will increase the use of words, which are grammatically correct and present professional behavior. I would like to improve on giving in-depth insights and clear background information in my responses so that the interviewer can relate to it convincingly. I also need to expand my expertise on developing stories based on STAR approach to increase my potential of answering behavioral-based interview questions in the best way. A ten-minute role-play interview was conducted on 29th May 2014, in which I played as a counsellor to work with a student client on her study issues. The client revealed the difficulties she faced when she was trying to work on her assignments. I tried to imply the micro skills that I had learnt in the previous counselling classes to help the client as much as possible in a limited amount of time. The session was recorded, under the client’s permission, in order for me to evaluate and improve my interviewing skills.
A manager plays a pivotal role in steering the success and failure of the organization. As a budding manager, I wanted to get an insight about the daily activities of a manager and learn about their ‘typical day’. Therefore, an interview was scheduled, where the manager shared her views and gave invaluable advice on becoming an effective manager. This helped me in integrating the management concepts taught in the class and its implications in the real world.
Through the self-assessment instruments utilized in this program, I have gained wealth of knowledge about my strengths, and weaknesses and how they affect my personal and professional life. By using different exercises, I recognized new strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, I identified ways to develop my strengths and overcome my weaknesses. The Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI) identified some of my strengths as the ability to get things done, initiating, and taking risks (Kolb, 2007). In the Strongest Self Feedback Exercise, some of the feedback listed my strengths as having excellent interpersonal and communication skills, being self-confident, a fast learner, determined, hardworking, and an awesome listener (Drucker, 2005).
The positive feedback provided me with things my respondents believe I should continue doing. Some respondents noted that I am confident and motivated. The results also showed that my respondents think I am efficient. Another response was that I adapt to change well. Other words like cheerful, encouraging and fun to be around were some of the positive responses received. Great communication is also something noted that I should continue to do. My responses showed that I am a hard worker. According to the respondents of the survey, I am a good listener and very supportive of others. These responses helped to boost my confidence because they helped me to know that there are things that I am good at and things that I should continue doing. It is also nice to known that people notice little things about you that are positive.
When we were first given this assignment I had not put much consideration into it. I thought we were to ask a couple of questions, it would all work itself out and I would be done. But this was not the case. The thought and reflection put into interview questions really surprised me. There was far more factors other than the questions you were asking, because you were also dealing with people, people who are giving you there free time, their attention and opening themselves up to you a stranger, so there were far more responsibilities then what were initially at hand.

I thought that the practice interview is extremely pertinent especially for students who will eventually be searching for jobs. I believe that this assignment allows students to get in the mindset of how serious interviews are. I also believe that this opens the door for students to learn about the other aspects that career services offers other than practice interviews such as helping students perfect their resume. The practice interview truly gives students the ideal interview that they will eventually experience once they start interviewing for jobs closer to their field of study. The practice interview helps reduce stress and anxiety. The constructive feedback is also preeminent they help familiarize some of the questions that may be asked in future interviews and help with responses.
