My Learning: Past, Present, and Future
When you step back and look at the big picture of life, you will notice that the concept of learning plays an essential role in it. What you learn and how you learn is your key to life success and it can open a multitude of doors for you along the way. Learning, however, is routine and much like other activities that are routine such as brushing your teeth or eating meals, you begin to think less and less about what you are doing or how you have been doing it. I never actually put too much thought into how I learned or the origins of my learning experience, but after reflecting on the ideas I have been able to clearly identify the manners in which I have learned and how I can transform my learning experience

A key goal that I am determined to accomplish is to focus less on what grade I am receiving, and more on how in depth I am learning the material. My college education, in my opinion, is much more than a percentage or a letter grade; it’s an opportunity to learn absolutely anything you desire, and a chance for you to take on challenges to help you grow intellectually. To achieve such things, I have to change my mindset and this is something that I learned from Carol Dweck’s Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. In this book, she depicts the “growth” and “fixed” mindsets and places emphasis on how much more beneficial a “growth” mindset it, especially when it comes to learning. This growth mindset is characterized by embracing challenges, persisting in the face of setbacks, learning from criticism, and having a greater sense of free will, and I want to incorporate all of these into my learning experience here at Illinois State University. College provides many challenges and setbacks, and I want to be able to not only handle them, but also learn from them. Rather than feeling upset when I receive a poor grade, I will try my best to understand what I did wrong and create a learning experience out of it. Rather than giving up if I don’t understand something, I will persevere to comprehend the material on a deeper than surface level. As Zig Ziglar once said, "If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you." Basically, Ziglar is emphasizing how learning can be accomplished, only if you put your mind to it. In “Learning (Your First Job),” Dr. Robert Leamnson shares his strong belief of beginning students entering the post-secondary education. Leamnnson discusses the many ways of learning that can be used in college, such as studying, notes, assignments, and exams. Leamnson continuously discusses how no one will learn unless they want to. Learning is a biological process that relies on the brain. Just like how our bodies need maintenance, the brain does too. College is a place where you learn things that help you later. Leamnson mentions how students are responsible for succeeding in college not by just showing up, but by putting in effort towards the classes they are taking. In order to succeed in the learning of the post-secondary education process, students should be aware of how to make notes, understand what they are studying, and take assignments seriously.
In the Brainology article, professor Carol Dweck put forward two mindsets: fixed mindset and growth mindset. That is an educational project that was instituted by Carol Dweck and made her famous for. That is talking about transforming student’s motivation to learn found out that people have fixed mindset or growth mindset all have profound effects on their motivation, learning and school achievement. From this article, this is particularly designed to help students break all boundaries and limits set by negative learning perspectives, while also instilling self-confidence is fixed, that each person has a certain amount and we call this a fixed mindset. In chapter 3, Dr. Dweck speaks on the how the mindset affects your academic achievement. She touches on a coping method for fixed mindset called “Low-Effort Syndrome”, and how fixed mindset people deal with being judged or having failures. This syndrome is a way for fixed mindset to protect themselves through protecting their egos. In fact, this low-effort syndrome does not allow fixed mindset to see how their behavior is negatively affecting them. She then contrasts between the two mindsets when she explains that individuals with a growth mindset view failure and overcome their obstacles. They see that hard work is needed and but not the task or skill is not that easy. In the book, Carol Dweck states that “The fixed mindsets limit their achievements“.
Fixed mindset is perceived to be negative by many people; but after I thought about it, I decided that without my fixed ability, I wouldn’t have made such large academic strides. Have you ever thought about yourself if you are in the fixed or a growth mindset? A fixed mindset person is someone who overcomes obstacles, works hard, and failure does not stop them. On the other hand a person who is in the fixed mindset is someone who is non challenge, gives up, or thinks that success is abuse. In a book called “Mindset The New Psychology of Success” the author Carol S. Dweck talks about different ways we can convert ourselves from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and the author also talks about the qualities of the growth and fixed mindsets. In a movie“Freedom Writers” the author Erin Gruwell shows us how she was a growth minded teacher but her students were in the fixed minded group. Throughout the school year the students had a fixed mindset but as time went by the students somehow their mindsets into the growth mindset. Freedom writers illustrates the fixed mindsets of the teacher and students and a growth minded teacher who changed everything.
Dweck states that there are many characteristics that separate students success the main one being mindset. She continues proving that there are two different types of mindset in a student one being fixed mindset the other being malleable mindset. The study showed that fixed mindset student tend to not take risk and challenge themselves because they are scared they won’t get praised anymore if they fail. While malleable mindsets tend to challenge themselves therefore become more knowledgeable and surpass the fixed mindset in testing and learning skills. The challenges students face have the ability to cause a sense of fear establishing a hesitation to move forward. For many people, learning takes place through classes in school. Yet, school is only one of many places in which one can acquire knowledge or skills. The saying, “true knowledge means being aware one knows nothing,” in turn couldn’t be more accurate. Each day is a chance to learn, achieve, and aspire for tomorrow; thus, it is essential to make every day count. Education is not about regurgitating facts to pass an exam and then forget the material a week later, but instead inspiring a craving for knowledge and enthusiasm to seek information and experience. These are the foundations for which discovery and innovation rest upon, and the proverbs to which I live. My infinite hunger for knowledge and restless longing to make a difference have pushed me past my potential and to continue striving for more each day. Yogi Berra says, "Life is a learning experience, only if you learn" (qtd. in Reid). People continue to say this famous quote in their conversations, and they use it to say that people learn something new every day in their lives. Learning is not only in schools or in universities because life for any person is like a big university and full of good and bad experiences. Individuals learn from both of them. Everyone will learn each day new skills or knowledge, from birth to death. In this time, populace ask themselves what learning is, and how they learn. "We define learning as a process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential for improved performance and future learning,"
My personal philosophy of learning is deeply rooted in my belief that everyone wants to learn and grow and prosper; at least they do until someone or something changes that
During my time as a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a student, has made a tremendous impact on my life. This impact is one that I will carry into the future as I myself advance in my professional studies.
Academic Success, the goal of most students, requires: effort, perseverance, and motivation. Although most want it, many fall short; not because they are unintelligent, but because they lack the drive and mindset necessary to achieve it. A negative outlook can lead to many troubles down the road; authors Carol Dweck (“Brainology: Transforming Students’ Motivation to Learn”) and Rebecca Cox ( “ The Student Fear Factor”) share the same beliefs; a student's mindset is crucial for the basis of their academic performance.
