Saket Vissapragada Mrs. West AP Language and Composition 27 July 2017 Mindset Essay Psychologist Carol Dweck’s Mindset explores the two types of attitudes that are instilled in a person’s mind: fixed mindset and growth. In my situation, I was frustrated by any challenge that came my way. I hid my flaws so that I was not judged or labeled by a failure. I believed that failure defined me. Although I showcased a fixed mindset at the beginning of high school, I’ve vastly changed my mindset and I’m constantly working towards improvement academically and physically. Upon entering high school, the upperclassmen gave me the impression that you are either born a natural born genius, or you are born average and cannot do anything to change your ability. I began to receive ‘C’s’ on my assessments and didn’t bother to strive higher because I believed that my intellect has been fixed since birth. This example from my own life is much like the ones mentioned in Dweck’s novel, “The professor returns the midterm papers to the class. You got a C+... When I asked people with a fixed mindset, this is what they said:’I’d feel like a reject.’’I’m a total failure.’”(Dweck 8). Similar to my situation, those who responded to Dweck with a fixed mindset, did not allow themselves to reflect upon their mistakes and how they can change from them. I was dissatisfied with my performance at the end of the semester and evaluated my mistakes. Rather than being harsh on myself, I chose to change …show more content…
Fixed mindset is perceived to be negative by many people; but after I thought about it, I decided that without my fixed ability, I wouldn’t have made such large academic strides. Carol Dweck’s analysis of mindset has truly brought up some of my successes and struggles in the past, but through it all, one thing is certain: people can change their mindset for the
It was not until I read Carol S. Dweck’s “Brainology” that I realized I had a fixed mindset. I care more about getting a 4.0 than actually understanding what I am being taught and I also hate struggling. These habits are part of having a fixed mindset. It was after reading this article that I discovered I could change my mindset and be successful. Having a fixed mindset means that you believe that you and others only have a certain amount of intelligence. A growth mindset on the other hand, is believing that everyone has the ability to reach a higher level of intelligence through effort and hardwork.
In the article Mind-Sets and Equitable Education, Carol S. Dweck studies the link between mind-sets and beliefs and the influence it has on student success. This article examines how beliefs about how you learn impact the manner in which you learn. It is stated that growth mind-set as opposed to fixed mind-set promotes student success and achievement. Growth mind-set is the idea that intelligence is not something individuals are born with, but is rather a skill that individuals can develop through hard work and perseverance. Fixed mind-set opposes this idea as it views intelligence as an immutable trait individuals are born with. The article mentions that not only personal mind-set impacts an individual’s success but how they perceive the mind-set
In Carol Dweck’s “Brainology” the article explains how our brain is always being altered by our experiences and knowledge during our lifespan. For this Dweck conducted a research in what students believe about their own brain and their thoughts in their intelligence. They were questioned, if intelligence was something fixed or if it could grow and change; and how this affected their motivation, learning, and academic achievements. The response to it came with different points of views, beliefs, or mindset in which created different behavior and learning tendencies. These two mindsets are call fixed and growth mindsets. In a fixed mindset, the individual believes that intelligence is something already obtain and that is it. They worry if they
In the Brainology article, professor Carol Dweck put forward two mindsets: fixed mindset and growth mindset. That is an educational project that was instituted by Carol Dweck and made her famous for. That is talking about transforming student’s motivation to learn found out that people have fixed mindset or growth mindset all have profound effects on their motivation, learning and school achievement. From this article, this is particularly designed to help students break all boundaries and limits set by negative learning perspectives, while also instilling self-confidence is fixed, that each person has a certain amount and we call this a fixed mindset. A fixed mindset makes challenges threatening for students, and it makes mistakes and failures
What does it mean to be a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset? In the book Mindset – The New Psychology of Success author Carol Dweck breaks down the meanings of a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is when a person sees their failures as being an unsuccessful person. These fixed mindsets do not aim to challenge themselves due to the possibility of not succeeding or being seen dumb. They are discouraged by failing and hold back in life. Carol Dweck describes this has unhappiness. A growth mindset is a person who welcomes failures and takes these failures as a challenge to grow from their mistakes. They have the drive to push through the impossible, since to them there is no impossible. A Clear representation of growth
As far as I can remember, I was never really any good at school. I couldn’t concentrate on things for no more than 5 minutes at a time, I would either get discouraged or find it too easy and just give up. An author by the name of Carol Dweck wrote an article called “Brainology”. In it, Dweck describes that there are two types of mindsets: fixed and growth. Those who are afraid to fail so they never try anything new are those with a fixed mindset and the growth mindset are those who are not afraid to fail and find a new challenge, an opportunity to learn something new.
There are many attitudes that form certain mindsets. Some of these mindsets can change how a person does and perceives things. Some mindsets that can do just that are Dweck’s example of a growth mindset and fixed mindsets. According to Dweck, a fixed mindset is one in where “.. students believe that intelligence is fixed..” and a fixed mindset is the “..believe that intelligence is a potential that can be realized through learning. As a result, confronting challenges, profiting from mistakes, and persevering in the face of setbacks become ways of getting smarter. Because people with growth mindsets can through setbacks, and find alternatives to better themselves; They turn to perseverance and hard work to achieve their goals.
There are two mindsets growth or fixed. She argues that there is only two mindsets growth or fixed, I agree because these two mindsets are the most common ones in students. This takes me back to Dweck, Carol S. “Brainology”: Transforming Students’ Motivation to Learn. In this article students with growth mindsets cares more about their education rather than how they look. Students with fixed mindsets cared about how smart they will appear and they would reject learning opportunities because they thought intelligence would have to come naturally to them. I agree with what she says, there are only two mindsets. The reason I agree is because I was both mindsets, well now I’m only one. But before I was a fixed mindset and what I mean by that is sometimes I would feel dumb and I wouldn’t even care anymore about my studies. Till I noticed that the way I was going wasn’t going to
Dweck’s view contradicts Isaacson’s because Isaacson believes in intelligence being an innate quality. Dweck however, defines intelligence as how individuals continue to push and persevere despite the several setbacks they encounter. Dweck’s studies show two types of mindsets; growth and fixed. Isaacson’s article leans more towards the fixed mindset rather than to the growth, or ideal mindset. Dweck also focuses more on the process than the final result as she holds learning and hard work in higher regard than the end result.
Have you ever thought about yourself if you are in the fixed or a growth mindset? A fixed mindset person is someone who overcomes obstacles, works hard, and failure does not stop them. On the other hand a person who is in the fixed mindset is someone who is non challenge, gives up, or thinks that success is abuse. In a book called “Mindset The New Psychology of Success” the author Carol S. Dweck talks about different ways we can convert ourselves from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and the author also talks about the qualities of the growth and fixed mindsets. In a movie“Freedom Writers” the author Erin Gruwell shows us how she was a growth minded teacher but her students were in the fixed minded group. Throughout the school year the students had a fixed mindset but as time went by the students somehow their mindsets into the growth mindset. Freedom writers illustrates the fixed mindsets of the teacher and students and a growth minded teacher who changed everything.
This means students with a fixed mindset hold an implicit belief that a person is born smart or dumb and stay that for whole life. That can lead to cancellation in the face of difficulty. For example, students who have a fixed mindset thinks “I can not get good grades for English 151rw, because I 'm not good at reading and writing ”, then the fixed mindset prevents the student 's motivation from learn, practice, and develop the skills in this
During the mindset quiz, I didn't know what to expect at first. Though I did manage to educated myself while talking it. The idea of my state of conscious awareness, the structure of meta-knowledge, and the principles were all revealed to me though this quiz. With all of that was assured to me throughout it, I would like to make use of the knowledge to further educate my own conscious awareness in the practice of my everyday applications. As of the accuracy of this quiz and most forms of testing, I am one to speculate. I perceived this quiz to not be point to point accurate but an informed idea of one's personal attitudes as a likely outcome. With my adapted knowledge of mindset and the fact of the very possible self-growing concept, I
Fixed mindset is exactly what the phrase says: the person is fixed, doesn’t change, doesn’t grow, they are stuck. A student with a fixed mindset is concerned about how smart they are. They are worried about the final product or the grade. They view effort for someone who is incapable. They are more concerned about how they are going to be judged and may even lie about scores when they are not up to par (Briceno). In one of Carol S. Dweck (2006) studies, she found that by praising children with “You are so smart”, in the end, made them dumber and act dumber but claim they were smarter.
People with a fixed mindset are usually not motivated to do challenging work, apply very little effort, lose confidence after mistakes, and are intimidated when things get difficult. And I have experienced some of these situations. I get less motivated when I have more work, don’t try my best, and I put myself down after low grades. I lost confidence in myself after every setback, but I should of been looking to learn from them. I should actually look back and see what I could have done differently after a setback instead of degrading my own morale. For example, I could change the way I approach a test if I really messed up on the last one, or I can stay motivated at every task at hand. I would love to have a growth mindset, but I just grew up with a fixed mindset. And it has basically made me lazy and procrastinate. I should get rid of my bad habits and develop a growth
A fixed mindset is a person with different mindset that care about other things than school. Sometimes students are fixed mindset tempted to do some learning, but at the end attended to do the same as before. Also worry about how much different they are from other students. Growth mindsets believe that intelligence is a potential that can be realized through learning. Students are ready for the challenges they receive. The confidence of a growing student has its untouchable willing to learn more and
