According to White, Lippit and Lewin there are three basic style of leadership. Each style comes with its positive and negative effects, but nonetheless leaders tend to use one or a mixture of the three. The three leadership styles are autocratic, democratic and laissez faire.

The authoritarian style of leadership for many may seem harsh and extremely cut and dry. However that is not the case. The only challenge I may have is the slow decision making process when trying to include members in the decision making process. However, the advantage is that I would work with team members to make decisions which in return should increase their productivity because they are more involved in the process. The democratic leadership is also my preferred style because I’m more of a team player versus an autocratic leader. I would not demand my followers to do any task, I prefer to motivate my followers to success.

In this paper we will examine the major types of leadership styles. The three types are, Participative or Democratic, Laissez-Faire, and Authoritative.

Autocratic leadership theory is a part of the behavioural approach. In this leadership theory, leader makes all decisions and uses power to command and control the followers to achieve goal. According to Lewin(1939), “autocratic leaders are associated with high-performing groups, but that close supervision is necessary and feeling of hostility are often present” (p.173). It is incredibly efficient and tasks are completed quickly. Autocratic leadership can be beneficial when decisions need to be making quickly. For example, in emergency situation surgeon uses this theory because the patient’s situation is between life and death and there is no time to discuss with other members. Bass (2008) mentioned in the Leadership styles and theories article, “Autocratic leaders can be effective because they create good structure, and determine what needs to be done. They provide rewards for compliance, but punish disobedience” (Giltinane, 2013, p. 35-37).

The company designs its own items and their items are sold in more than 140 IKEA stores. The store is spread throughout approximately 30 different countries worldwide. IKEA distributes its thick catalogs once a year in the areas surrounding its store locations. Also, it peddles its merchandise through mail order. Additionally, the company offers high-quality items at low prices as their character. Then, the company buys items in bulk, ships and store items to save money for itself and its customers.
The leadership style combination between autocratic leadership and empowerment leadership would give the futuristic cutting edge per se, to create a diversified ultimate decision making policy. Autocratic leadership, which is a style that leaders who make decisions on their own without consulting employees enjoy and empowerment, which is a practice in which managers lead employees by sharing power, responsibility, and decision making with them (Boone, L. E., & Kurtz, D. L. 2009 p. 260-270). This mixture creates responsibility and accountability. If the leader is made to lead then, in return they will make certain key decisions based on experience, proven results and a “pocket” of advisors that will guide them based on their on comprehension of the field along the way. This creates a “hierarchy” which is necessary to let the employees who are coming up on the ladder to have a cause and effect “history” so to speak, for many different common and uncommon situations to use in the future.
In this paper I will look at the four major leadership styles, their characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and in what situations a particular leadership style is desired. Additionally, I will look at my leadership style and how I acquired this style throughout my career.
It is also known as free rein leadership. Sub ordinates are given authority to take decisions on their own. This was the least productive style among all three leadership styles.
