It seems that every time when you come home from school, you have to do homework for hours at a time. Students are lacking quality sleep because of this. If teachers were required to not give students homework, students would perform better on tests because they wouldn’t be up late doing homework. Students would incur less stress, get to bed on time, and be more relaxed allowing for them to learn more. Teachers would also be able to have more time to teach in class to instruct instead of constantly reviewing homework.
It is scientifically proven that if students stay up late doing homework, they pay less attention in class. The student’s grades will not be as high if they get less sleep. Another reason why teachers shouldn’t give out homework is because if students aren’t up late doing homework they will get to bed on time. This will lead to less absences and tardies because they would not be sleeping in late. Absences and tardies would also decline due to better physical health because adequate sleep helps fight germs. Therefore, not as many kids would be sick. The last reason why students shouldn’t have homework is because if they don’t get enough sleep, they might fall asleep in class. Students getting adequate sleep would allow them to be more focused

If the students don’t have as much work to rely on they could fail a test because they won’t have extra practice. Teachers will never know if a student doesn’t understand a subject because they won’t have homework to grade. Although we are used to doing homework every day we could change so it wouldn’t be as much stress for the students and teachers of having to get homework done. If teachers cut back on the amount of homework they give students there would be many benefits as well as
Also, students will be up later finishing homework and socializing on their phones with friends. Although schools will now have been adjusted to fit with students sleep cycles, that does not mean that the students will actually get more sleep. Also, people do not think of the consequences such as conflicts with transportation.
Khristina Janer, a mother from Illinois, says, “I don’t feel like a parent. I feel like a drill sergeant!” when making her kids finish their homework after an extended period of time (Wallace). Many studies show the effectiveness of homework and all of the benefits it can do for us; the problem is: teachers are making kids do too much homework when they get home from school. The teachers don’t take in the environmental factors that could be harming any student 's ability to get a task done. Teachers automatically believe that kids are irresponsible or unmotivated when they don’t succeed in finishing their homework. When kids are given this much, or this difficult of, homework, sleep is being sacrificed. Even when they are doing all of their
There should not be homework for students. For starters, homework pushes families further apart from each other. Secondly, homework causes kids to actually do worse on schoolwork and tests. Lastly, homework causes kids to get stressed out and depressed because they have to go home and do homework instead of have there own free time. Those are a few reasons why students should not have homework.
During this time students are given the chance to work through their homework problems and ask questions when they find a difficult problem, but much of the time students cannot advance far enough in their assignment to find a problem that they would need help with. When students are not offered any work time they must bring their homework home with them. There they must struggle through problems by themselves, because they have no one familiar enough with the material to ask for help from. Many students can get the wrong answer to a problem because they are guessing, this reflects badly on to them once the assignment is turned in and graded. Having a longer class would allow students to ask questions and allow them to obtain a better understanding of their homework before leaving the classroom. This understanding is vital in order to keep students progressing through their courses. Having work time in class would also reduce the need to reteach a large majority of the homework assignment. The students would have their questions answered before they leave the classroom. Students are the group most affected by the length of the school week. The amount of work placed on them creates great stress. Family is a big stress reducer in many students
Second, more sleep means better attention. What happens when you have more attention? You get better grades! Whenever children don’t get enough sleep, they slack off at school. This means their grades will drop. It’s just a simple fact that if people got more sleep they’d be better
Less sleep equals bad grades and unhealthy students. More sleep equals good grades and healthy
87 percent of high school teens are not getting the sleep that is recommended for a healthy lifestyle. Because, school starts at an early time, the time for sleep is compressed to a point where their minds and bodies are not ready to be awake (Richter, Ruthann). Due to having cell phones teens are staying up later, after doing homework to check their social media account, talk to family members, and to catch up on the new they missed out on in school or while doing homework. With the academic stress that is put on to teenagers in this modern world that has so much to offer and not enough time to seek it all, many come home from various practices and jobs just to do four to five hours of homework from advanced classes or even extra work from level classes that are required in all schools. The school should reduce the amount of homework given every night
A survey shows that the average time people go to sleep is around 10:30 pm to 12:00 am (Gregoire). Since students sleep in class, they are not learning. This lowers their grades and their knowledge. If all schools started later, than sleeping in class would occur a lot less. Students would learn better
...nd teachers would be able to get more accomplished with their students during the day. Studies show that there is a direct correlation between good sleeping habits in children and increased learning ability. Children who get adequate sleep have better cognitive function, are more inclined to concentrate better, and formulate questions better for things they do not understand.
It also gives students less time to spend with their families, which is something that is very important. I have stayed for after school enrichment several times and that requires me to stay another hour or hour and a half after school. On the days that I stayed for that, I felt like I hardly had any time to do things before it was time to go to bed. I didn't have time to go to dance, be with my family, or even get my homework done for the next day. I feel that the advantages of school starting and ending later make all the difference in schools. If students get the amount of sleep their bodies need, they will be a lot more alert and attentive. So, that helps them remember the information that they're learning, which could result in better grades. Sleep is very important to your health and getting the proper amount everyday could also be beneficial in preventing illnesses. I recently came into school late because I overslept. I made it to school just in time for second block. Even though I rushed to get school, I felt so alert and energized. I wish every school day started later so that I wouldn't feel so tired and drowsy all the time. I feel that it would be a great idea for school to start later
Staying up all night is what may have to happen in order to finish homework. This can also make students possibly fall asleep during school, which is bad for learning, and doing tests. Secondly, school weeks should not be shortened because students have less time to do activities outside of school. In the section "Finding Balance" it states, "a day at school usually involves more than learning how to solve equations and write essays. There may also be physical education, electives like theater and robotics, face-to-face time with peers, and access to free meals.
If the students are able to get more sleep, they will be able to pay more attention in class. Attendance of the students can increase also. A study was done and published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics. They took a study on 197 students. The average age for all of the students was 15.
That being said, homework advocates often argue that homework produces a higher capacity to perform well academically by improving critical thinking skills and understanding, leading to better retention of knowledge translating into good grades (Terada). Beyond its grade earning value, some find that homework creates favorable habits and values in a student by teaching them hard work and independence through it’s thought provoking problem solving and time consuming nature. On the other hand, despite some cases where homework has benefited certain students, research has shown the dangerous mental and physical pitfalls of homework. Homework can lead to limited sleep which can be an extremely serious issue, especially with teens who are already suffering from sleep disorders such as insomnia, narcolepsy, or restless leg syndrome (LeTendre & “Teens And Sleep”). The physical exhaustion a student faces from limited sleep can make it hard to focus and perform well in class. Sometimes, it can be a struggle to even stay awake. Another colossal problem that students face as a result of homework is an unhealthy amount of stress. Stanford research has found that less than one percent of students from an “optimal highschool” find that homework is a non-stressor (“Stanford Research”). To
Homework is way to stressful for kids who already have enough to do at school, so why give them work to do at home that just adds on to the headache Known as work? Teachers give out homework because they think it is helping kids education. What they don’t know is that the work they are giving out just overwhelms students who don’t know how to do that work. It also means that some students could possibly be getting bad grades for things that they don’t understand. This is very important to my claim because if we have less homework none of these things will happen to students who don’t understand the topic. What can take more experienced students 5-10 minutes can take others longer time periods to complete the work given. giving students less homework you should receive better quality homework. That paragraph should
Students are bombarded with hours of homework every night and it interferes with their lives. They are tired of staying up late at night to finish their homework or a paper that is due the next day. They should not have this workload that they have every night because they also have to live their childhood. Life is too short to be staying up until 11:00 because of schoolwork. Homework is unhealthy for students and it is not academically beneficial for them.
