The Importance of Nutrition and Sleeping Habits In The Classroom
Having good nutrition and sleeping habits is very important for education. It is important for children and adolescents to perform well in the classroom so that they get the most out of their education. Having poor sleeping habits or poor eating habits can have many harmful effects on a child’s classroom performance. If children have good eating habits as well as good sleeping habits they will perform better and be able to live up to their potential.
Good nutrition is very important for children in all areas of their life but it is a key factor in how they perform in the classroom. One study showed that “taller more healthy children have higher levels of verbal development” and healthier children have “positively associated performance on reading, spelling, and arithmetic tests” (conceptual). Classroom tests are a very good indicator of how a child performs in school. The study shows that children with good nutrition have done better than children with health problems or who are under-nourished. Another study correlates with the first in showing that “children who had more adequate diets scored higher on the cognitive battery than those with less adequate intake” ( ).
Good nutrition helps cognitive function which is defined as “the ability to learn categories, to process and structure information, and to learn and react to social and environmental cues. Cognitive function also includes the ability to ask appropriate questions and provide appropriate answers with in a given environment and to identify and solve relevant problems” (Cline). Cognitive function is important for good performance in the classroom because if a child cannot convey t...

...nd teachers would be able to get more accomplished with their students during the day. Studies show that there is a direct correlation between good sleeping habits in children and increased learning ability. Children who get adequate sleep have better cognitive function, are more inclined to concentrate better, and formulate questions better for things they do not understand.
Good nutrition and good sleeping habits are important to good classroom performance. They both can greatly improve learning ability and cognitive function having a positive affect on children’s education. When children have poor sleeping habits and poor nutrition their learning ability is less and classroom performance is lower. Both factors are very important for children’s education and good habits should be developed early ensure that they will do well throughout school and in life.
Active kids who need more calories than the federal limits are also at risk, and may end up feeling weak, fatigued or nauseous during sports and exercise. According to a 2012 article written by registered dietitian Timi Gustafson, not getting enough essential nutrients at meals may lower kids’ IQ scores, memory capacities, fine motor skills, social skills and languages skills into early adulthood and beyond. A child’s poor dietary habits can even influence his sleep patterns, which may have an effect on cognitive behaviors and academic abilities. The results of a research review published in 2004 in the "British Journal of Nutrition," children who are micronutrient-deficient may exhibit more aggressiveness, less mental endurance and lower intelligence test scores. our school lunches are affecting our learning abilities and this is a problem that needs to be resolved
The public health problem that I am addressing is the lack of sleep. The target population will be adolescents and college students in America. Sleep is important to health because the timing, quality, and duration are essential. Sleep plays a big role in good health and well-being throughout your life. How you feel when you are awake comes from how well you slept at night. Sleep has a direct correlation with metabolic regulation, emotional regulation, performance, memory consolidation, learning, and brain recuperation process. Because of these factors it should be viewed as just as important
Unfortunately, in today’s society, school administrators focus heavily on standardized test scores and school rankings thus adding more pressure on students and teachers. This being said, schools have begun to focus on providing healthy foods because they help increase a person’s cognitive and critical thinking ability. It is seen that nutrition plays a great role in students’ performance on exams and physical activity due to the correlation between school provided meals and low student
If all of these important activities occur during sleep, why is it that people are so willing to short themselves of this vital activity? Although much about sleep still remains a mystery, research and experiments continue to show how important sleep is to each and every person. Throughout this paper, I will discuss sleep and the effects that it has on performance and health, especially among college students. A college student’s sleeping pattern is a reliable indicator of their level of performance in the classroom and other school-affiliated activities, as a lack of sleep leads to decreased performance. Sleep is directly related to the level of performance and health of an individual; the more rested a person is, the better that person will perform and feel (Dryer, 2006).

In this lab we studied the effects of sleep on learning. Using what we have learned in class, we know that the normal sleep period for adults is around an average of 7-8 hours a night. What we wanted to determine by the use of this lab was to show how changing the amount of sleep we get at night might affect our cognitive performance the next day. We can assume that having more or less sleep than the norm, definitely has an effect on our learning, specifically on our short term memory but what our study was designed to test was whether that is a positive or negative effect. We presume that having too little or too much can be detrimental to our learning capacity, specifically our memory retention rate. More specifically, we hypothesized that if we have a normal 8 hour sleep duration, then we will have better memory than if we were to sleep more or less than 8 hours.
Proper nutrition is crucial to the growth of brain’s structure, it’s effective functioning, and maturation. Children brains grow much faster than adults, in fact, most of the brain development occurs in early childhood. Proper nutrient supply in the body fuels the effective growth of the brain, including the brain. If an element is missing from the diet, then it is more than likely that there will be an effect on the behavior due to such malnutrition, even though there might possibly be other factors acting on the side too. (Coursin et al., 1972, p.
Perhaps the most essential part of a student's day is when they eat. What kind and how much food people consume determines how adolescents perform throughout the school day. Rushing to eat is not healthy, and neither is a day with all work and no down time. This also teaches children that eating is an interruption in the day and that they should eat their food as fast as possible (Chen). It has been
Introduction Sleep studies have been conducted since as early as 1913. However, the impact of school start times on student academics is often overlooked by most schools. In reality, start times can significantly affect academic performance by disrupting adolescents' normal sleep cycle, leading to a lack of sleep that impairs learning, and hindering academic performance. These theories have been tested through sleep studies, and most of them have been found to be true. Sleep Cycle Changes When children transition from primary school to middle or high school, it can significantly affect their learning due to changes in their sleep cycle.
A child’s proper growth depends greatly on their nutrition and health. A healthy diet is essential to the developing child. Food should never be used to reward, punish, or bribe a child. Instead children should have three healthy meals with snacks in between. It is also important for children to have good self care behaviors (including bathing, washing hands, brushing teeth), and adequate sleep.
Sleep has always been a popular subject among humans. There have been many studies that examine sleep and its correlation with a wide variety of variables, such as depression, energy levels, and grades. Students, as a group, are widely studied. As the world’s future leaders and thinkers, there is great importance placed on their achievements. In this study the effect of student sleep habits on perceived academic performance is investigated. Many things may affect students’ academic success among these variables are sleep habits.
Since schools are becoming longer, sleep is more crucial for kids. If kids don’t get enough sleep, they going to be tired all day and won’t want to learn anything. According to Mary Carskadon article,” Let Kids Sleep” it states that” sleeping affects the learning process in many ways.” What this really means is if young children or all children aren’t getting the sleep they need, they are not going to do well if schools are becoming longer.
Preliminary Thesis Statement: Sleep deprivation has detrimental effects on the health and academic performance of students.
However, the lack of sleep can come from our environment or from ourselves. Cornell graduate student, Rebecca Robins, found that when she researched how students talk about sleep, it was mainly in negative terms over eighty percent of the time (Pope 1). College students have some influence over their sleeping habits, but so can universities. The University of Louisville, for example, is having a “flash nap,” which is like a group of people having a quick nap and some universities even have sleep seminars (Pope 1). Participants in a sleep study took an eighteen-week course on sleep, then were evaluated for sleep improvement, but this test only had a limited number of subjects meaning it was not a reliable study (Hershner & Chervin 80). Furthermore, spreading awareness of sleep does provide a positive outcome, though on a university scale it would be different. Considering that there are thousands of universities all across the country where students are sleep deprived, it is necessary for students to learn how to use their time to receive an adequate amount of
This study compared diets of 5,000 children in public schools and compared their performance on standard academic literacy tests. The data showed that students who ate poor, low-quality foods, high in sugars in fats performed worse on these standardized tests. Additionally, junk food can skew academic performance of students in schools by altering memory and learning abilities.
