For my ethnographic research project, I plan on studying high school wrestlers. Wrestling is a world famous sport that has its competitors face off in one on one matchups based on weight. Wrestling involves movement of the whole body in order to put an opponent on their back, and these movements include, but are not limited to; grappling holds, pins, and throws. Wrestling is also one of the oldest sports in human history, with cave drawings and sculptures featuring it around the world.
I want to study high school wrestlers because of their lifestyle. Over the past three years of highschool, I have seen the various effects of wrestling on my friend Tony, who has wrestled for almost 8 years. After seeing what he goes through each year, I have begun to wonder what the process is like for other wrestlers. I have also wondered what the demographic for wrestling is, the kinds of people that like to participate in, coach, and watch the sport. I also want to see the difference between wrestling and other popular sports like football, basketball, and soccer.
The questions I plan to ask include: Why do you wrestle/coach wrestling? How long have you been in the sport? Why/ how did you get into wrestling? What are the main concerns of wrestling? What kinds of backlash does the sport face? Are those sources of backlash based on …show more content…

The development of wrestling is not shown until the ancient Sumerian times, where it is first depicted as a type of event or competition.
