WWF: A Review of Professional Wrestling Bang!
Fireworks as if it were the fourth of July. Thousands of people in an arena and billions watching around the world anxiously awaiting the arrival of their favorite superstar. Suddenly the crowd erupts as a man comes strutting down to the squared circle. Accompanied by a beautiful busty young woman, the wrestler is cheered by his loyal fans and booed by his enemies. Soon , another man enters the stadium the same way as the first man. The two men stip into the ring with a certain sense of cockiness about themselves. Before the referee can even tell everyone that the match has started, the two men are already battling in the “squared circle';. During the fight there are many suspenseful moments. Brutally beating each other for five minutes the match is finally over with some bloodshed. Today people are taking wwf professional wrestling to the extreme. WWF wrestling is one of the most watched shows on television today. WWF stands for the World Wrestling Federation. Wrestling started sometime it the mid to late sixties and has changed dramatically over the years. When wrestling first came to be the wrestlers weren’t like they were today. Back in the olden days of WWF wrestling, the storyline of wrestling wasn’t as vulgar, and the industry was not as wide spread throughout the world. Today the whole industry of the WWF is benefitting from merchandise being sold all over the globe. Even though many people may consider wrestling to be fake, know that some aspects are very real. There have been some instances where people have gotten hurt and even died from a stunt gone bad. There was an instance about half a year ago when a professional wrestler named Owen Hart was repelling from the rafters on a cable and the piece that was attached to his harness snapped and he plummeted 40 feet broke his neck and died. This was a tragic loss to every wrestler and to the whole WWF world. If this isn’t real you wouldn’t know what was. Another example of reality is when Stone Cold Steve Austin was being suplexed (a professional wrestling move when your opponent lifts you in the air and slams you into the mat), his opponent landed Austin wrong on the mat. This resulted in a career ending surgery for Steve Austin. One thing that wrestling has done over the past couple of years is raised media uproar pertaining to violence at home between children.
Vince McMahon’s WWF is a multi-million dollar corporation and has been wildly successful in capturing the sports entertainment market. “Monday Night Raw,” the weekly soap opera on TNN, is one of the three most watched cable shows each week. In addition, the WWF has weekly wrestling shows on UPN and MTV. Personally, I am caught up in the phenomenon. I set aside my Monday evenings to watch Monday Night Football and professional wrestling. I enjoy attempting to figure out the storylines before they unfold and attempt to guess the action that may happen in the next segment.
With that being said, we begin to notice the comparison between both dogfighting and football. This was shown by using a system called “HITS, in which six sensors are placed inside the helmet of every player on the field, measuring the force and location of every blow he receives to the head” (Gladwell 56). The HITS system helped to conclude that practice can be just as dangerous as the games. With this being said, football is an overall reckless style of play that can continually cause brain injury. Not just football but both of these high intensity sports are viewed as damaging to one 's body both physically and mentally. Because of this, if people consider dogfighting to be unjust, illegal, and abusive then they should believe football to have the same damaging effects. Unfortunately, there is such a high demand for football, because of all the money it brings. Because of this, scientist and doctors will ignore the realistic facts and continue to allow people to participate in this
Football is something as American as apple pie. It is thought of as gritty, physical, and all around fun just as most Americans like to be thought of. For decades the NFL has dominated the world of football. However, Vince McMahon, the founder of the WWF, has introduced a new and controversial professional football league called the XFL. Much of the controversy is about whether the XFL is a force to be reckoned with or just another of McMahon’s clever marketing ploys. Although the XFL’s survival has been questioned by many, it promises to be a league full of the smash-mouth, trash-talking, fan-oriented football every fan deserves.
Gwendolyn Brooks’ “First Fight. Then Fiddle” is a sonnet with ten syllables in every line, rhymes as abba in Shakepearean’s. As an old form of poetry that follows the structure and rhyme, “First Fight. Then Fiddle” mimic a rhythmic melody in semantic stanzas. And “First Fight. The Fiddle” rhymes better than Sylvia Plath’s “Lady Lazarus” which requires deeper exploration in dimension. Although, different style in the writing, they share some common ideas. Both poems talk about death and survival and about the darkness of evil that lurks inside the snatched lives. In “First Fight. Then Fiddle”, Brooks addresses that life can be intimidating with many turns, enjoyment of it can be captivating. Brooks
A long time ago, back in the olden days, Bruno Sammartino was a superhero who sold out Madison Square Garden countless times. Back in those times, wrestling strictly adhered to kayfabe, so many of the fans believed
The XFL is trying to attract two groups of people as their main audience, football fans looking to extend the NFL season and young people who might not watch much football right now. They are targeting these viewers with a more fast paced and controvercial style of football. They are going to have microphones on everyone so that they can hear what players are saying to eachother. They are hoping that this will add some excitement to the action on the field. They are going to encourage trash talking, endzone celebrations, and make the cheerleaders more involved in the game through interviews and their constant presence on the television. This is directly aimed at the younger audience and directly plays off the success that the WWF has had at attracting this audience.
Until the break of 1980, wrestling was primarily a big man's game. Sheer strength and intensity ruled the ring, forcing smaller wrestlers to take the extra leap to make a name for them. The real main-eventers were the Bruno Sammartinos, and the Bob Backlunds, and Killer Kowalskis. Men like Bret"Hitman"Hart, Tito Santana, Ricky Steamboat, and the "Macho King"Randy Savage had to add more excitement to their style due to the lack of strength. What they would devise became the most popular ring structure for over 15 years. Technical wrestling is best characterized by faster, moving confrontations with endurance to the end. A good technical wrestler, such as Bret Hart, will use a series of fast-paced moves that don't take much strength but rather his opponents' momentum. He will use the ropes to give him more speed but he isn't clumsy on the rebound. He's quick to counter just about anything and he definitely isn't afraid of taking his attack to the next level, such as ascending the turnbuckles. He will take risks but he can usually access second and third winds when endurance becomes an issue. The technical wrestler has a keen sense of his surrounding environment, and because he is always alert he usually finds himself controlling the situation.
Economic drivers remain down from historical levels. In 2003, WWE created two separate major television programs, Raw and Smackdown!, each with it’s own story lines and talent. This was done to create two touring companies and increase the number of live events and provides the potential to increase to the contribution of the entertainment business. WWE just needs time to produce the intended marketplace results. The company consistently retains the merit of being the number one regularly scheduled program on cable TV with Raw on Monday nights on TNN, and Smackdown! Is the highest rated show on UPN. It airs on Thursdays.
When we first arrived I’d thought we’d taken a wrong turn and went to a traveling gypsy convention by mistake. The whole field outside the school was filled with tents of various sizes and colors. 200 wrestlers, about thirty of which were girls, filtered about the area. As my soon-to-be teammates and I headed to the first practice, anxiety gnawed at my stomach like a dog with a bone (FL). I wanted to impress everybody, and prove that I could make it in this sport. Before we started, the coach patted me on the shoulder. “I’ve got your back all right.” he told me. I smiled and nodded. At least one person was looking out for me.
...lives. Without wrestling, there would be no fighting, no self-defense options or maneuvers, or any way for someone to be in the best shape of their life, without being in the military or special workout programs. Involved and used in everyday life, wrestling is not given the credit or respect that it deserves, for the sole fact that it is no football or basketball, and people don’t usually grow up doing it everyday in the local neighborhoods. (Myself).
Total Drama has a competetion where they have to jump off a thousand foot cliff into a tank of sharks. Survivor is still very intense where they have to be behind bars underwater with little breathing room to get the feeling of drowning. Survivor’s challenge makes you feel like you are going to die where as if real people were to do the challenge in Total Drama they really would be dead. Even with in the challenges Total Drama will excagerate the injuries with people such as Beth where she has gotten electrecuted by an eel, knocked off the bridge, and mauled by wild animals. While there are quite a few injuries that take place it is ussually something more a long the lines of stung by a jelly fish, dehydration or they ate something they weren’t supposed to. Even when these injuries do occur if they are deadly then they will immediately be taken out of the game and won’t magically get better ten minutes
Gracie’s choice tells the the story of a young teen who had to fight for the custody of her four younger siblings. Gracie faces a legal system that ignores the obvious evidence that she is capable of raising her younger siblings but because of her age the system automatically tells her no. From the moment I watched this movie on Lifetime it inspired my life tremendously. This movie doesn’t relate to me but it relates to people who have an importance in my life. Gracie’s Choice displays struggle, independence, and determination. It is a prime example as to what it means to growing up before your time.
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, echoes through my head as I walk to the middle of the mat. "At 160lbs Aidan Conner of La Junta vs. Rodney Jones of Hotchkiss." All I can think of is every bead of sweat, every drip of blood, every mile, every push up, every tear. Why? All of this: just to be victorious. All in preparation for one match, six minutes. For some these six minutes may only be a glimpse, and then again for some it may be the biggest six minutes of their life. Many get the chance to experience it more than once. Some may work harder and want it more than others, but they may never get the chance. All they get is a moral victory. Every kid, every man comes into the tournament with a goal. For some is to win, for some is to place, others are just happy to qualify. These six minutes come on a cold frigid night in February at a place called the Pepsi Center. Once a year this gathering takes place when the small and the large, the best of the best, come to compete in front thousands of people. I am at the Colorado State Wrestling Championships.
When it comes to physical contact sports, there are two categories, collision sports and tackling sports. American football, ice hockey, lacrosse, boxing, and many more are considered collision sports. Tackling sports would consider rugby, Gaelic football, Australian rules football, and even soccer as some of the world’s tackling sports. A collision sport is way more dangerous than a tackling one. For example, in a football game, it is pretty typical to see players lose their helmet’s, ripped out of their jersey’s, and be taken off the field by ambulance. Reason being is because nowadays players feel like they are Iron Man...
As I got older and more aware of the sport, I did not just see it
